Fitting 2 Defenders in a list

By Lord Vithiss, in X-Wing

Recently ive been trying to fit two defenders in a list. Ive played rexler and vessery to decent effect. I also tried a pair of onyx escorting a lambda. But now im thinking of trying

Soontir fel-Ptl

Onyx-Ion cannon x2

100 points

Do you think this list can pack enough punch or even have enough hull/shield to last? I dont play against phantoms in my area as im typically always the imperial player. So the worst match up for me is usually a falcon.

As strange as it sounds, you might be better off with Delta Squadron pilots than Onyx - it's much harder to block a Delta, which makes their white K-turns (predictable as they are) more effective

So with the remaining 4 points perhaps a shield upgrade on Soontir?

It could work they'll go after fel first if he can evade them the defender's will ion a few targets setting them up for fell to knock down.

So with the remaining 4 points perhaps a shield upgrade on Soontir?

Yeah - it's an insurance against the unlucky critical or OHK, at least. Soontir will be the priority target (because absolutely NO ONE wants that bad boy dropping in on their six), but left unmolested the Defenders will quickly punish an opponent as well.

Soontir can always turtle up and stay at range 3 if you're up against Han as well - he'll still be a priority, but so difficult to pin down...

Any tips for deployment with this squad

I'd split the defenders into a group have them pointed diagonally into the engagement when that happens. Soontir on the opposite side and catch them in a flank.

I like keep the defenders going slow in. A closer space means likely less chance of your 4 k being blocked

And deltas and shield instead. Even consider proton rockets or hull instead. Ion cannon isn't that great. Only really good at r3

If you use the Ion Cannon every other turn on the Defender, it does it's job very effectively. Ion a target, K-Turn past it, use your primary. Target is forced to (red) K-Turn the following round, Ion it again, rinse, repeat until dead.

Thanks guys this has been helpful I'll try it out and let you know how it went.

2 x Deltas + Hull is pretty epic, and should be considered, as mentioned above :P

Related to this topic, I'm actually (stepdaughters willing) going to X-Wing night at my semi-L FGS. I was actually planning on running:

2x Delta+HLC

Turr Phennir + VI.

I think I might like your build better, for competitiveness, but I have a serious love for Turr

Two Hlcs is nothing to sneeze at. May you live long and prosper. And not be matched against phantoms.

My brother has been using 2 onyx squadron pilots with a bounty hunter w/ recon spec. I can tell you from personal experience this is an effective squad.

Lately I've run

x2 Onyx squadron pilots w/HLC

Captain Jonus

A very simple but brutally effective list

Delta x 2

Vader, EU, Prockets, Outmaneuver

And deltas and shield instead. Even consider proton rockets or hull instead. Ion cannon isn't that great. Only really good at r3

I don't know if I agree with that, the Deltas can get fantastic use out of an ion cannon. The problem is that they move so freaking early, if you're already behind someone it's tough to make sure you have a shot when you move, and without smacking into your target's rear. A simple two-straight, Focus, ion again can pin down even an A-Wing from turn to turn, especially if it's one-on-one. It isn't all that dramatic, but it does the job without a lot of risk.

If you've got another ship on the board, all the better, but if you really want that Defender to sustain itself without risk, I always vote for the Ion Cannon

Last night I ran:

Rexler + Predator

Vessery + VI

OGP + Vader

It works exceedingly well if you know how to fly Defenders.

That sounds like a lot of fun! What were you up against? Did you focus all three ships on a single target, or did you spread out? It feels like the Defenders would be able to barrel into your target, and then you stick it with Vader at the end of the round.

Tried two Deltas with ion cannons and Soontir Fel with Push and shield today, and it worked quite well. I played the Deltas as aggressively as I could, doing five straights followed by koiograns, blocking as much as I could, with Soontir lurking in the flanks. Nera was flinging flechettes all over the place though, so I had to play my Interceptor carefully. In the end it was her facing a single delta, neither had any shields left, but besides tougher shielding a Defender is simply stronger than a B-Wing, so she went down in the end.

I'm not sure about prokets my friend had them on jake farell and he never got to shoot them even though he's in an a-wing, i think on vessery it'd be a heck of an alpha though.

On vassal I've even gone as far as running 3 Defenders

Rexlar-Predator

2 Deltas

I haven't tried

Vessery+1point EPT of your choice,(I would almost lean towards adrenaline rush, over VI)

2 Onyx Squadrons

Of course Rexlar draws the most attention but with 18HP with 3 agility it isn't exactly an easy list to kill especially with all of them using focus every turn

Rexlar-Predator

2 Deltas

How did it go? I'm gradually beginning to suspect those seven extra points spent on Rexler isn't really worth it. Not quite ready to give him up yet, but right now I'd rather take a Delta with a heavy laser cannon over Rexler.
