"Yeah, it's 'Star Wars', but it's also..."

By Aluminium Falcon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I figured they just cleaned-up the sub-titles for the children...

Sebulba convinced me. No one yells, "FODDER!" after such an epic wipeout destroys their pod racer.

Jar Jar definitely stepped in pudu.

In the campaign I'm currently GMing, the anime Fullmetal Alchemist has been a great guideline for the way I run the Empire. (Be warned, this post will contain slight spoilers for said anime.) Being set in a country controlled by a corrupt, militant, Nazi-like political regime that uses magically powered soldiers to beat down rebellion, FMA has been a pretty heavy influence on my Imperials. Actually FMA has been the main influence for how I do anything military, Empire or otherwise.

Honestly, this setting lends itself extremely well to the Western as many of you have already stated. The Wild Bunch, The Magnificent Seven (or The Seven Samurai, if you prefer), Deadwood, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Young Guns, and pretty much every single Clint Eastwood Western can be adapted pretty handily for EotE.

And if you like the smuggling aspect of the game? Well then, I'd recommend watching the Cocaine Cowboys documentaries and a ton of Miami Vice.

In fact, now that I think about it, pretty much anything helmed by Michael Mann could be used as inspiration for EotE - Thief, Manhunter, Collateral, Public Enemies, Heat, etc.

And how about Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita and The Professional for Hired Gun ideas?

Finally, Red Dwarf for humor. ;)

I find that Kryten makes for an excellent LE-series repair droid. :)

Darth Rimmer! yes!

I see EotE mostly as Shadowrun in the Star Wars universe

I am currently looking for all kinds of way to "bend and flex" the system to see what else can be done with it (Classic fantasy? Martial arts? Dragon Age? Actual Seatlle 2070's Shadowrun? I dont know yet.... testing, and having fun along the way)

AKA: "Solo's 11"

One of the rare times ever I actually played a game instead of GMing was a rousing game of TOON back in college. My buddy that ran it had a rare gift for improvised humor. Ok, he was hilarious. I wish I was still in touch with him, I have a strong urge to see the movie ****** done Edge-style, and my humor isn't up to running such a game.

Think of it, a psychotic Hutt running crooked gladiator matches, an ex ISB agent that seems to shrug off blaster fire and sells worthless weapons, a massive slightly cyberised bounty hunter, a barely understandable Mando bare knuckle brawler on a quest for a better stock freighter for his ma, a couple carusca jem dealers trying to be outlaws, and stuck in the middle, a rare honest fight coordinator and his idiot best friend. Floating through this story is a rare gem, prized for it's use in lightsabers, desperately sought after by a rich Tapani lord just starting out as an Inquisitor, who isn't nearly as deadly or skilled as he thinks he is.

What other system could you do all this in?

A futuristic world of James Bond and Mission Impossible espionage!

You guys must be pretty young not to think of Ice Pirates. It's a bad Knock off (comedy) making fun of alot of the movies listed above including SW.

I’m 48 and I’ve never heard of Ice Pirates. I don’t think I’ve been accused of being “pretty young” anytime within the last couple of decades or so.

Add this 39 year old's amazement too... Never heared of it.

Oh I've seen Ice Pirates wasn't really worth going back for a 2nd look... but there are worse movies from the 80's, much much worse and I think I've seen/tried to forget most of them.

I guess for ideas for games (and sometimes characters) I tend to look to war movies from the WW2, Korea, Vietnam era and so on- Das Boot, The Dam Busters, The Beast and Apocalypse Now. The group declined to meet a 'Colonel Kurtz' :)

Modern movies like District 9 and Elysium by Neill Blomkamp I also enjoy.

On a sci-fi side of media, Blakes 7, Space above & beyond, Cowboy Bebop, Star Blazers, Ghost in the Shell and even some of the less demented parts of Lexx.

Wow, all these Old People never hearing of Ice Pirates? Admittedly, it was a pretty forgetable (read: terrible) flick, but it was on the back cover of every comic book for 4 months straight!

Next you'll be telling me that you never heard of Megaforce!

Ahh, you young-uns. ;)

Nope. Never heard of it.

Okay, so I’ve at least heard of all these. I’ve never seen Cowboy Bebop, and while I liked Star Blazers when I first saw it as a kid, I’m not a fan today.

But the rest are all good!

It's a little hard to find, but you might want to check out the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 remake from a couple years ago. It's all the good bits of the original refined with modern story telling:

My inspiration?

Star Wars

Dune

Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy

Men in Black

Bit of Star Trek.

Transformers (sorry I only know the movies)

DC and Marvel movies (sorry again. Call myself a geek/nerd)

Those are the top sources. Then there's:

Jules Vern

Indiana Jones

A-Team

Tom Clancy Jack Ryan

and many more but you're probably bored now lol.

Bebop is worth watching, I thought it was pretty entertaining and it is quite different to a lot of 'cartoons', but yeah I probably wouldn't go back for a 2nd dose of Star Blazers either.

Did see the live-action version a few years ago and it wasn't entirely terrible, but not that great a movie.

Aeon Flux on the other hand was pretty good cartoon, but probably one of the worst live-action movies made in a long time.

BEHOLD THE AWESOMENESS OF THE EIGHTIES!!

I thought for sure you were going to say https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIoSPevvsds.

P.S. still no idea how to link to something using just text instead of the actual url otherwise it would say "Air wolf" and that would be the link.

If you want to get a discussion going on good Animé, I can start with Akira, Appleseed, Desert Punk, Dirty Pair, Ghost in the Shell, Gunslinger Girl, Witchblade, and many more. And that’s just what I’ve currently got in my iTunes library. I have shelves and shelves of DVDs downstairs that have not yet been brought up for consideration.

But Cowboy Bebop is not one I’ve seen. So, I guess now I have to add it to the queue.

There's good anime? Heh heh.

How about some fun series that ended up in space at one point or another?
