95% of the games i play our melee and i decided to include the new Iron Throne in one of decks. This i have painfully discovered is not ideal for this melee deck

Anyway.....If I am running a Targaryen deck with Pentos location 'discard a targaryen attachment to save a character' and somebody plays Valar whilst the Iron Throne is kneeling. Am i correct in stating the characters cannot be saved as i cannot trigger any responses because of the poxy Iron Throne ?

Well, you have it backwards (the Iron Throne prevents response triggers whilst standing), but aside from that, yes.
