New to X-Wing, looking to dive in Wave 5

By RedOnesGoFasta, in X-Wing

Hello, I am looking to get into "normal" X-wing and was hoping to get some advice about possible lists. I say normal because at first I was not very interested in X-Wing. The system seemed cool but I'm a fan of large/Imperial ships so with the firespray and shuttle being the only choices I had left it alone. Now when epic came out I got really excited and ran out to buy a Corvette, starter kit, and some y-wings but then ran into the problem of no one plays Epic (at least locally).

So I have again been sitting out of X-wing until I saw the wave 5 announcement with the Decimator. This has got me excited for the game once again but I want to make sure I purchase something that I can actually play semi-competitively. As you might guess from my name I am/was a 40K player and after seeing what 6th ED did to my Ork Army I guess you could say I'm a little gun shy.

What I would like to do is to run a double Decimator list. I thought I would see lists like this all over the place due to double Falcons being so popular but whenever I see a Decimator in a list it always seems to be paired with other ships. I'm new so I'm probably missing something obvious but is there something inherently bad about having two of them? My goal would be to make a list I really enjoy playing, can fly well, and win half the time. Would this be do-able? What lists would I be able to do well against and what would I struggle with?

Example list I have been thinking of:

RA + Rebel Captive + Relentless

Oicunn + Mara Jade + Relentless

Thank you

Do you have a core set?

I'd say that you could start with a Decimator, 4 ties, and 2 Interceptors maybe Imp Aces. Tie Bombers might be good too.

That collection would give you a number of options to make lists you could find fun and I'd say at least semi-competitive.

Probably not that many because there just aren't that many models out there flying in real world situations to fully vet the effectiveness of just two Decimators attempting to plow right over things

I do have a core set, but I have never been a fan of most of the fighters which is why I haven't jumped into the normal game yet. The exception being I do like the TIE Avenger and Gunboat, but I heard the Avenger/Advanced was in a pretty bad state right now and the gun boat is not part of this game yet.

Ok, I was hoping with it being spoiled and some people taking them home from the convention that people would get a lot of playtesting in proxying and/or playing vassal. But I can see that the supply given out was probably a very small percent of players.

If you are not really into the fighters, i think you should wait for armada to be honest.

Then here's my recommendation.

Pick up the Decimator when you can or even 2 if you can. Get a Tie Advanced pack, the advance isn't that good but with Vader it's still fun to use. Get maybe 1 more Tie Fighter pack, and either Imperial Aces or 2 interceptors.

With those ships you'll have a ton of options for list building.

Ya Armada may be a much better option for the OP.

like the others said - maybe Armada is a bit more up your street

I actually have taken a look at Aramada as it did sound more akin to my style. As odd as this may sound though Aramadas scale seems to be a little too big for my taste. Instead of controlling one or two big ships it seems to be about controlling an entire fleet. I was really excited about Epic 200pt battles but as I mentioned it has not taken off yet and wave 5 looked like something that could get me that type of game in the normal 100 pt battles.

VanorDm, thank you for the suggestions. I'll take a closer look at Vader and Imperial Aces and see what I could come up with. But it sounds like overall I'll just need to wait until more people get their hands on the Decimator to see where it fits in the game.

The decimator should be out soon. We are all waiting patiently for the boat to dock so all of us non-Gencon participants can get our hands on them.

EPIC play is a sore point for me at this point. I've been waiting for news on the Empire's EPIC ships and they have not released any announcement aside form that they will be doing Empire EPIC and that announcement was almost 4 months ago but a year and 4 months since the Tantive was announced. The Tantive went on sale early this spring. I have not picked up one yet as I play both factions and will pick up a Tantive when there is something for the Empire to field.

Decimators are expensive and require considerable upgrades.
