Recovering from Strain during Combat

By RebelDave, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The book doesnt seem to specify, only saying you can recover from strain after an encounter.

Has anyone got any suggestions for recovering from Strain DURING a fight?

Specifically, if they have exceeded their threshold and fallen unconscious, what would you say would allow them to recover some strain in order to keep fighting?

Cheers

RD

You can spend Advantages to recover Strain.

During combat and while concious you can recover strain through the expenditure of advantage from checks made. Once unconcious, a Medical check performed on you can eliminate Strain by spending advantage from the roll. Otherwise you will have to wait until after combat to eliminate strain.

@mouthymerc - thankyou very much!

Don't know if this is RAW, but if they're incapacitated (gone beyond Strain Threshold) our GM lets another character roll Medic and any Advantages rolled heal Strain.

I allow this in my game. A Medicine check where the successes allow for the elimination of Strain, but it isn't an actual rule.

RAW there are several ways to recover Strain:

Triumph/Advantages on any skill check made by the PC

Advantages on a Medicine check targeting the character

Across the games:

The Physician talent allows for more Strain to be healed on a Medicine check

The Inspiring Rhetoric talent allows for allies to recover Strain with a Leadership check.

The Second Wind talent is a ranked talent which allows for strain recovery once per encounter

The Contingency Plan and Intense Presence talents allow for a character to recover strain equal to Cunning / Presence

The Improved Hard Headed talent allows for a character who is incapacitated due to Strain to recover enough Strain to again become conscious.

The Makashi Flourish talent allows for a character to recover strain while inflicting strain on his enemy.

And finally, there's the Resolve talent, which is more proactive Strain reduction, making it so you suffer less Strain in the first place.

This is correct. Although it should be noted that, by the rules-as-written, each character can only benefit from one Medicine check (or Mechanics check for droids) per encounter.

So if a character falls unconscious from strain and has not yet received a Medicine check that encounter, then he can recover one wound per success and one strain per advantage. If this reduces his strain enough that he is no longer over his threshold, then he is back on his feet.

However, if the character has already received his one Medicine check before he falls unconscious, then nothing can normally be done. He's probably out for the rest of the encounter.

Make friends with a Politico and their Inspiring Rhetoric!

A Force Healer can also remove strain via the Control: Strain upgrade in Heal/Harm.

When the rules state "Benefit from one medical check" would a failed check still count towards you total of one check? Since you haven't actually Benefited yet.

Would you read that as one SUCCESSFUL check?

Has the healer reached the limit of their ability, or may they keep trying until the player actually benefits from the roll?

"Benefit" should have a pretty clear meaning already. Any Success or Advantage used to heal Strain or Wounds is a benefit. Ask yourself, after a check is resolved, "did I benefit from that in any way?" The answer should be self-evident.

Well the actual language in the book is "Each character may only receive one Medicine check each encounter."

The most natural reading of this language is that each character may only be targeted by one Medicine check per encounter, whether it is successful or not. In other words, if the first check fails, too bad - you can't try again on the same character.

In narrative terms, this is supposed to represent the limits of first aid. Any wounds or strain that aren't healed by the first attempt are assumed to be too severe to treat on the fly. They will require more careful treatment later.

I'm not familiar with this talent. Are you thinking of Surgeon to heal more wounds on a Medicine check or is this a talent from FnD?

It's a talent in the Healer specialization in FnD.
