Engine Upgrade? On a Y-Wing? Are You Serious?

By Funkleton, in X-Wing

I was playing around with a friend last night - not exactly a proper game, more just spitballing a few different builds and scenarios.

Conventional wisdom seems to go that the ability to boost works best with high pilot skill or high speed/agility ships - or both.

So just for a laugh I flew a Gold Squadron with EU - and it's actually pretty good, in fact it handles almost as well as an X-wing - especially with a basic R2 ..... except it's an X-Wing with a load more hull and shields and a turret!

give him a high PS wingman with Squad leader - or team him up with Cracken and your lowly GSP can use his boost in much the same way as a high PS pilot would

Give him R5 K6 and (and an action passing buddy) and he not only moves (almost) like an X-wing, but has the same agility too.

I somehow doubt it's a build that's going to see much table time in tournaments, but it put a huge smile on my Y-Wing loving face

A bit like this: :D

Yeah i've been considering Y-wing EU's for some time. ESPECIALLY now the BTLA4's are in the equasion.

Should be hilarious with "Genius"

After all those scum announcements ... you still need to buy Falcons for Engine Upgrade cards .... <_<

Those were my thoughts exactly - also the improved handling makes the Blaster Turret a serious consideration even without the BTLA4 title

Yes and no - I don't play competitively so having an EU card for each ship I want to field it on isn't a requirement

It would still be nice though - and as someone who has no intention of ever fielding more than one YT1300 in a single list it's a little irritating that it's never been released on any other ship.

We'll probably also be seeing a lot more Firesprays being sold for Proximity Mines, too. The only with Engine Upgrade on a Y-Wing right now is that you can use R7-T1, which is usually better, if you were planning on using only one.

This maddens me to no end.

If I am not mistaken, you can buy individual cards at FFG's store. May not be in stock, however.

Love the idea of the OP though!

You mean this store?:

http://store.fantasyflightgames.com/

can't see anything there offering additional cards of any description - am I missing something?

Not enough people know about this little beauty. Especially on Dutch.

I'd quite happily buy a YT1300, take out just the EU card and swap it for a new Firespray minus its PM tokens

What's this magical FFG store being mentioned??

I disagree.

High PS is great for anything with agility options, but if a ship already has a stellar dial, Boost and/or Barrel Roll are often guilding the lily.

However, on a Y-Wing, Defender, or Shuttle, an Engine Upgrade can make a mediocre dial incredible.

R7-T1 is your friend.

If it wasn't for swarms, this is the list I'd be taking to worlds. It's done great against everything else I've put it up against but it just doesn't have enough firepower to handle massed numbers of TIEs or Z's. I also haven't fielded it in a while because it isn't much fun for my friends to play against. It's hard to find a friendly game if the other guys aren't having fun.

r7-t1 is amazing for the points. The issue is you only get the TL if you are in range 2 however the free boost is always great and cheaper than the EU. Pair it with cracken @ ps 10 and a blaster turret you get your TL/Focus just about every round (if that is the best option)

Is it? The most common ships for Engine Upgrade are the Shuttle and the Falcon. The Shuttle fits neither of those archtypes, and of those Falcons many of them are Chewie, who isn't high PS and only moderately speedy.

There really isn't one. TeamCovenant however does sell some singles. Of course a lot of the ones you'd likely want seem to be out of stock...

But it's an option.

Triple Y-Wings with Engine Upgrade and some turret was one of my earliest lists. I'll probably adapt it for Scum, too. Great fun!

I would think that the problem with EU on Ys is action economy. EU is fantastic for increasing the maneuverability of clumsy ships, but it uses your action. Y-Wings, more than many ships, seem to need to rely on their TLs and Foci in order to get damage through and boosting would use up their action. Might be less of an issue with scum-Ys that can take EPTs though.

I've found that an Ion Cannon Turret's 3 dice can get a hit through often enough without focus / TL and if you can stay out of their arc with Engine upgrade, damage output is less of an issue. Also you won't need to boost every turn and when you don't need to its a good chance to pick up a target lock which you get to keep till you use it.

Having field Y's with Engine Upgrades quite a bit, I'd say the problem is their cost. Can't get enough of them to deal with mobs but it'd be unbalanced other wise.

R7-T1 plus Dutch plus Adv Torpedoes x2

Garven or Kyle for focus passing.

I Like EU on both Y wings and X wings. It really messes with an imperial players head. they are not used to that kind of manuverability (sp) out of those kind of craft. I could especially see it's usefulness on a BTL4 modded Y-wing, though I think I would take R7-T1 instead.
