Campaign - Losing and adding new players - How to handle it

By eagletsi111, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

So my group at the store is always changing from week to week. We probably have 2 steady players and myself who is the overlord.

So how do other's handle campaign mode when new players want to join.

New Players Joining:

Do you give them XP equal to everyone else.

Do you allow extra re-rolls for free,

What about items?

Anything else?

Players who only show once in a while:

Do you give them XP equal to everyone else.

How do other GM handle these problems?
Let me know,
Thanks,

I don't have experience with a group changing that much, but in terms of numbers of players changing, the simplest solution I've found is to keep the party (that is, the hero characters) the same from week to week, and just change who controls them. The downside of this (if the group is changing wildly) is that the players might feel less invested in their heroes.

An alternate solution is to use epic play, rather than stringing together a campaign- everyone gets to spend the same amount of XP/gold every session.

Interesting.

How about more than 5 players, from time to time we have 6. Does anyone have rules suggestions for handling that?

You can try to share the overlord role by talking over strategy with them, or letting them control lieutenants, but other than that, the only thing you can try is to let players take turns controlling heroes or let him talk shop with the heroes during the game.

Other than that, there's nothing you can really do to let a 6th player join in, Descent isn't really the right game for it.

Our gming group always plays Descent with 6 players =) 4 for heroes + 2 for overlord. We decided that it much more fair if 2 players are playing together for the OL. Two heads are always better then one + it's not cool when you seat sad and lonely and heroes all giving hi fives each other when winning =) In this case OL also has a chance to hi five =)

Great! Thanks guys. I will try the 2 Overlord thing tonight. We have 6 players coming

One of my groups has the non overlord players controlling allb the heroes so if some one new comes or someone misses a week, the game still goes on.

I need to figure something out. Because we had 6 players and one didn't want to play overlord.

I'll see what I come up with.

Humm anyone ever try something wacky like for five heroes you add an extra open group but only allow the 2-hero monster number be placed?

Maybe also only normal sized monsters, no large or massive.

Yeah this is what we have always done. Chances are someone will always be unable to make it and its not too much extra work for a player to control two heroes.

I like that. I was thinking of just going back to the first and starting over.

So with 4 players you get 1 large monster and 2 small. and with 2 players you get 2 small.

When you got to 5 you would get 1 large, 4 small ? just expanding the number of players by starting over.

5 =2, 6=3,7=4.

Well I wouldn't push the hero number to 6 or 7, at that point no one can fit in the usually smaller map sizes that second edition uses. Also just imagine the turn order and how long it will take.

Well we tried it with 5 and a Overlord at the store. Using my suggestion above. It worked well, the only issue being that turns did take a little longer, but everyone had fun. I think 5 may be the max people to play as was stated 6 or 7 may be crazy unless you make your own missions.
