Thoughts on a carnor list

By JustRob, in X-Wing

So its probably not new but i havent seen it before.

Carnor Jax with PTL and target computer

Howlrunner with stealth

4x academy ties

100 points

I think it could work as an anti phantom anti falcon list

Falcons tend to rely on toekn stacking so carnor at range 1 with focus and evade.

Then swarm goes to work.

Against phantom spread out to cover arcs. 2 ps 8 people to potentialy shoot first

Thoughts? Improvements?

I ran a list full of named Interceptors with VI and TLs along with Vessery in a Defender for quite a while prepping for an escalation tournament.

Lessons learned:

1) Carnor has a BIG BULLSEYE painted on him by most opponents due to his ability! Everybody seems to want to kill him first no matter what the rest of your build looks like! Either use that to your advantage by using PTL and SU and HU and make him beefy with arc dodging and evade. Or leave him stripped down and act as a sacrificial lamb (i.e. bait) so the rest of the build can concentrate fire in relative safety!

2) A list with any Interceptors must always start with Soontir Fel!!! He is too amazing not to bring, meaning he will do more over the course of a game than any other Interceptor! His ability almost guarantees he will see the end of the game if flown properly!

3) TC's on Interceptors are most useful when supporting Vessery! Otherwise they seem to be a waste, it's better just to Focus. I found arc dodging and Focus more useful than TL and Focus, The TL/F combo didn't get setup often and was rarely used in combo.

Hope that has some food for thought!

With carnor, i prefer to go full interceptors. Soontir is the rockstar singer, but Carnor is the humble drummer, who allows Soontir and Turr to kill stuff easilly. I agree with Plainsman, Soontir is just the better option if you are just choosing a lone flanker.

I run Carnor a lot. Currently he's my favorite pilot. Ultimately he works best when he isn't the biggest threat, or there's at least an equal threat. Another interceptor as mentioned above, a defender, etc... I'd also add that I give him at least one defensive upgrade and often two.

Soontir is the boss, agreed!

I fly him in a different list to this, a little 4 man death squad.

Im looking at using carnor puerly as a disruptor. Turtle and hide behind if possible. If carnor never shoots thats fine with me!

Could the miniswarm be improved?

Perhaps carnor with stealth and howlrunner swarm tactics?

Carnor does great with ships running advanced sensor. He effective cancels out 1 damage for each of those ships!

The list is not exactly "new" in the sense that it is a Howlrunner+TIEs (miniswarm) alongside a highlight ship. What is fairly unique is choosing Carnor Jax as your element. Very cool, honestly. I think he can work. I usually play with 4-5 TIEs and Whisper. Whisper is a hunter, but Carnor Jax can be both a hunter and a force multiplier with his focus shut down ability. Both supporting your TIE's firepower and contributing some damage hopefully himself.

You mean sensor jammer?

I would drop stealth and targeting computer to upgrade the academies to obsidians. Better against predator, z95s, and academy pilots.

I have been using Jax a bit lately, and I like him a lot.

A few thing to think about that I have noticed.

He is one of those pilots that is a trap if you try to hard to make his ability "work".

I see people force him in close to maximize his ability at any cost. I think this is a mistake. I always fly him just about the same as I would any interceptor...and make sure he never gets fired at. If he gets to range 1, cool, if not...he is still a PS8 interceptor.

I think a lot of people fly him straight in, get him focused dead, and declare him a bad card.

One thing that he is good at, but does not get credit for, is how he changes your opponents moves. If they move first, they can't land next to him and still get their actions. Keep this in mind when you are thinking about where they will end up. If you are playing against someone who is worried about it, it can make them more predictable.

Have fun. Looks like a fine squad BTW

Looks pretty solid to me. I do think I'd like the Stealth/Swarm Tactics version better.

Here's a list that features Carnor that I adapted from a friend's 150-point list. It's not the kind of thing I would've thought up myself, and when playing with/against it, it's surprisingly brutal. Messing with your opponents actions if very effective.

Rexler Brath (37)

+ Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

Captain Kagi (27)

Carnor Jax (26)

+ Push the Limit (3)

I wasn't a fan of Heavy Laser Cannon at first (not just here, in general), but the more I play with it, the more I'm impressed with just how much damage it can deal. Having all three PS8 gives you some nice options in terms of moving/shooting. I'm also a fan of two-ship lists, so there's something to be said here about the minimalism of a 5-card list as well.

I've been contemplating swapping Brath for Vessery with Veteran Instincts. Keeps the PS uniformity, but gives you stronger action stacking for the HLC. Also frees up a point for Initiative or something on Kagi, either Intelligence Agent or, intriguingly, Enhanced Scopes which would let him be even more of a nuisance by blocking, getting his action, and still getting to shoot at PS8.

Colonel Vessery (35)

+ Heavy Laser Cannon (7)

+ Veteran Instincts (1)

Captain Kagi (27)

+ Enhanced Scopes (1)

Carnor Jax (26)

+ Push the Limit (3)

I've flown Carnor a lot recently to, and I think if flown properly he can be better than Fel, simply because he helps the rest of your squad do more damage. That being said, TC isn't the best idea for him; either fly him only with PtL or stock him full of defensive upgrades. Fly him like an interceptor until you end up at Range 1; then switch to a knife-fighter style to stay close and out of arc. Then the rest of the squad works its magic.

So I was playing with ideas for Carnor Jax lists and I came up with this:

Carnor Jax

-Expert Handling

-Shield Upgrade

-Royal Guard Title

-Experimental Interface

Soontir Fel

-Push the Limits

-Royal Guard Title

-Targeting Computer

-Shield Upgrade

Dark Curse

Academy Pilot

The list that just says 'NO!'.
