RIP in piece Jan Ors

By Breaking The Law, in X-Wing Battle Reports

she died as she lived, making lazy 1 maneuvers to try and shred those stress tokens.

This will be a bit less detailed battlereport than most.

I brought my (Wo)manlist Squadron Ever list to a tournament at The Soldiery in Columbus, Ohio, on October 19th.

The list, for those who haven't read my previous reports, is as follows.

Wedge-predator
Wes-r3a2 and vet instincts
Jan Ors-blaster turret, moldy crow, recon specialist, vet instincts.

After going 7-1 between two different cities, I was sure I could win in Columbus with this list. I was on the verge of going pro at x-wing. Sponsorship deals, a 7 digit salary, and all the women in the world awaited me. The life of a pro miniature gamer is lavish, and I was so close to reaching that pinnacle. But alas, I went 1-3.

My first game was against Tycho, Jake Farrel, a prototype pilot, and a b-wing. Wedge either bumped or missed all game, and after killing Jake and the prototype I got wiped out.

2nd game was against 3 bandits, kyle katarn, and nera dantels. We slowly moved towards each other, with Wedge acing 2 z-95s while I only took minor shield damage. And then my opponent got an injured pilot crit on a stressed Wedge. I proceeded to panic and do white maneuvers away from the enemy with him for the rest of the game. I lost, he had 1 bandit and nera left, and I only had Wedge.

Game 3 was against a kitted out Rexlar Brath, Darth Vader, and a tie bomber. The big asteroid was placed right in the center of the table, and the others were in a ring exactly 1 distance away from it. We spent the first 6 turns circling the asteroids with no shots, before deciding to finally engage. At this point, me and my opponent had completely switched sides. We both dove into the asteroid field, and I got some lucky rolling off, killing Rexlar befor he could shoot. The game was down hill from there. I went 100-0. What was unique about this game, other than the 6 turns of no shooting, was that all our combat had taken place inside that ring of asteroids, but there were no bumps.

Game 4 I fought a swarm of 7 academies and Dark Curse. I guess this list had given and taken little damage in his previous games. Including a 0-0 tie against my round 3 opponent. I ended up killing 5 academies and crippling a 6th but got wiped out in the end of what was easily the biggest x-wing slugfest I have played at a tournament. Wedge with Jan one shotted quite a few from range 1, and that helped, but 8v3 is not very good odds. I still played better now that I finally had some caffeine and food in my stomach.

Lessons Learned

1-don't show up on an empty stomach, especially if you have been doing any kind of serious physical activity the last few days. I was making all kinds of dumb decisions I normally don't make. I finally got into it by round 4, after eating a sub and some mountain dew. I feel like I let myself and my early opponents down though by not bringing my A-game.

2-know the local meta. In Ohio, Cincinnati and Dayton have always been somewhat close gaming wise, and while I feel Dayton has the better players, we have very similar metas and skill levels. Columbus however, is a bit of an island. They tend to do their own thing, and don't travel out much, so I didn't know what to expect. I realized my squadron was built to compete in a meta full of falcons and phantoms, and was great at killilng other elite lists. Columbus however, favors generic pilots a lot, and that cost me. They are also a lot better at x-wing than I remember them being at 40k.

Results

1-3, getting like 9th out of 12 players or something. Terrible. At least my buddy James won with a perfect 4-0. I now have 3 of the giant Han/Luke cards though, so that's cool.

At this point, I am taking a break from x-wing, and will run something different when I get back into it.

I feel like I have to disagree, being a Cincinnati native and counting both of the past two Gencon runner-ups amongst the participants of the last tournament I played up there.

My only question is why not Opportunist and R2 Astro on Wedge instead of Predator and VI on Jan? Opportunist's ability to sling a 5th/6th die onto Wedge's hammer seems too good to pass up in this list.

Few reasons for not using opportunist. It requires Wedge to shoot at whatever Wes shot, drops Jan's pilot skill below phantom levels, and isn't all that great if Wedge doesn't have an action. It also stresses him. Predator just works, assuming I don't have an injured pilot card. Often times I shoot Wes and then Jan at one thing, kill it, and then fire Wedge into something else.

1 single reason for not using Opportunist and R2 Astro instead of Predator and VI -> it makes the list cost 101 points ;)

**** that's a bummer to hear that!
