Sorry to see you go, I do think creating the topic was a little childish and attention craving. However you did it and I partly agree with you and partly disagree with your viewpoints.

The community of X-Wing is like any other internet based community. It always can be better, there are always those who poison the well and people who "just want to see the world burn." Over the years I've just simply ignored them because we have different opinions on how someone should present themselves on the internet. I think there's way too much trolling going on from people in general.

As for the gender issue, I don't know if there is an issue or not, all I know is that anyone who wants to play is more than welcome in my book and I do whatever I can to make them feel welcome. Does FFG need to do more to entice women, I don't think so, they do what they can to make an interesting and good game. It doesn't matter about how many male or female pilots there are in the game, all that matters is that the players enjoy themselves no matter who they are.

I do believe there are many toxic individuals in the community who see everything as a joke as well as people who are way too sensitive. I hate the whole idea of the joke topics "How can we be more...blah blah blah" it just brings up old problems and memories again and is insulting to the original people involved, however that is my opinion.

Don't just abandon a community because it is toxic, if everyone did that, all that would be left is a cesspool of hatred and anger. It's up to the good members of the community to work to provide that good experience for new players despite there being a few individuals who wish to ruin things.

I don't remember all of it, I was in Shanghai during what I think was his big troll period, this summer. But I also rarely read usernames. From what I saw, he just trolled 24/7. And would get a topic locked, and then remake it, more trolly than the last.

You know, in the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies, how Agent Smith just keeps growing in power until the whole world became a cold rainy hellhole? That was Riban. Which I guess makes the mods The Oracle.

To be honest, the more threads I see...the more I just shake my head and wish people would be understanding that some people may get upset.

It started with a thread about getting more women to play x-wing (wether they wanted to or not, if you read some of the posts) that, ofcourse devolved into the usual morass of social justice crusaders vs male chauvinistic pigs, and then another thread popped up, this time about including people who didn't have enough money to play x-wing - wich lead to a bunch of parody threads- wich lead to massive complaining (theres more OT than (yet another!) x-wing lists now!) and passive agressive "i'm leaving" posts.

All in all an intresting afternoon for the admins

I must say I don't really get it - you don't think there's an issue to discuss, don't discuss it, no need for all the mockery threads. Assuming they didn't know it was a troll (and how could they) then isn't it just mean?

Basically ribaan made an alt account pretending to be a female poster wanting to get a negative reaction, that failed and he got busted when someone discovered the alt account was the same name he used in star wars galaxies.

Then the satirical threads started, then the inevitable happened and people took it too far.

Ah, yes, the classic "I'm leaving" thread. I know many will not care and you'll wish me (not) well, but I'm leaving this community.

The bullying threads, headlined by "How can we be more inclusive to..." that have cropped up denigrating those of us who care about a sense of community proves just how adolescent this community is and how unwilling many of you are in accepting a challenge to improve gaming communities. I have a naive philosophy that I operate under online. I feel the only way that the internet becomes a better place is to challenge those that make it crappy. Anonymity is a powerful cloak and I believe that social resistance is the only real way anything could hope to improve.

When I started playing X-wing, my first concern was whether or not I'd be playing the game with a bunch of man-children, like I've experienced many times before in gaming. I was hoping that this community might be different and I was (naturally) assured that it was different. Those people were wrong. This community is no different than any other "gamer" community out there. Its filled with people who place their own self gratification above a sense of community. There are the positive ones, to be sure, and I appreciate your dedication to improving the hobby. At the same time, as a busy adult, I reserve a personal right to not expose myself to caustic groups of people. The good old boys club is alive and well on this site, and you've made a strong push to crap on anyone who dares bring a dissenting opinion or wants an honest discussion about issues in the hobby. The original troll of the gender thread did exactly what he probably intended to do: show how ugly this community is.

So, I just want some of you to know that, contrary to your passionate personal beliefs, you ARE what is wrong with this hobby. When this game dies (which it eventually will, but I hope not for a while), many of you here will be to blame for it. New players will continue to come here and get curb stomped by those of you who refuse to use your extensive experience with the game for a positive purpose. You'll pretend like it isn't you. You'll scapegoat whatever is convenient. You'll find something to rationalize your poor behavior. And the cycle will repeat. You'll be shocked. You'll be surprised. But it will be no surprise to those of us who actually place community over competition. Thanks for eventually killing a great game and justifying the stereotypes that the general public feels about our passions. It only took you two months of making me feel not welcome on a daily basis before you made one more successful step towards ensuring your exclusive club remains exclusive.

I've decided that as much as I'd enjoy playing games with more women in the hobby, my higher goal is now to prevent anyone from being disappointed by this community in the way I have. Rather than encouraging anyone to join, the better, kinder advice is to explain the consequences of joining this place before they decide. You don't deserve the benefits that different perspectives would bring this game and you are poor ambassadors for the hobby.

There are plenty of great contributors here, lots of people doing cool stuff with lists and repainting ships, lots of good rules discussion. But there's also lots of garbage and fighting. Most X-Wing players I know won't touch the forums for this reason.

I've considered leaving, too. It's not a great place.

As it is, I think commuting over to Teamcovenant might be in my best interest for now, since FFG has such little control over their forums (this applies to all the forums, there was a very impressive troll in the RPG forum that took forever to be banned).

TC is at least more focused on X-wing, but there are a couple of people there capable of making your life intolerable if you disagree with them. At least there were when I stopped posting and visiting.

I'm a lot warier of private team forums nowadays because of that power mentality. If you don't agree with them, you're going to have a bad time. Though, they usually have more intelligent discussion.

TeamLiquid for Starcraft is like this. Thankfully I agree with them most of the time. But they're... kind of control freaks. They do have behavior under control though. One thread only for balance whining, you'll get warned or banned very very fast for that. They do take action for complaints... Thankfully they responded well to the things I've seen.

Someone complained about being warned when he typed his chinese name to another user, but that a guy saying: "Speak Engrish" didn't get anything. They went back and banned the "Engrish" guy. Anyone who's a little informed knows that that isn't acceptable under any circumstances.

They also have much more active moderation, and nicely have specific threads for controversial topics. They also do a general better job of unbiased moderation, as they'll usually leave a topic intact, but ban/wipe specific posts instead. (COUGH something FFG's moderation could really do).

I've pointed out the issue in the past about trolls on this site hurting this community. I'm a member of Team Covenant. And its a excellent X-Wing community of great people that support this game. Trolling is not put up with there. And Team Covenant always has a strong member showing at worlds. I strongly recommend giving them a try if you do not care much for the forums here. I read whats posted here time to time but rarely participate any more as most the responses are trolling or grammer nazi comentz. I've been to plenty of tournaments I've had very little bad experiences with other people. I would not base people who play this games on these forums.
