So, I'm leaving! Yay!

By klecser, in X-Wing

These forums arnt really worth reading these days, to many blatant trolls (the inclusive threads) and to many rock paper sissor threads, also a good bit of the "what you think of this?" but then they get pissed when you offer advice.

If anyone else has played world of warcraft in the past 4-5 year or so i miss the elitist jerks forums of 2009-2010, now there was an amazing community, you know what i mean

it seems the 'copycat' inclusive threads have nuked much of the intelligent discussion that has appeared in this forum in the past. I have been a member here longer than most and i have noted a definite deterioration of quality discussion. id like to see things get back on track again.

Have you seen what the original "inclusives threads" have devolved into?

The one deleted and the two that got locked by mods?

Yup. They might have been started with good intentions but they went bad fast. Then again it is to be expected when people bring up heavy themes like that. And me personaly, I believe that games should be just games intent for fun and not some kind of political correct vanguard of social justice.

Alright, real talk. Let me tell you a little bit about myself, so you know my position on this issue, and why I think these threads are silly.

I am from Dayton Ohio, and I have been a gamer for 14 years. I have played warhammer 40k, battletech, heavy gear, and now x-wing, and across a lot of different areas of the country. I am a lot more experienced with minatures gaming than most people on this forum.

I am not what you would think of as your typical gamer, as a person. I have split my time in the last few years between Ohio and China, where I have made a plethora of friends. I can count men and women from every continent but Africa and Antarctica as personal friends. I have friends who are extremely conservative evangelical christians, politically active atheists, and everything in between. I have dined with millionaires in Shanghai, and split cocaine and beer with poor hillbillies at barn parties. I can get along with almost anyone, because I know how to compromise as a person with other people. I don't mean that I just get along with these people, or tolerate being around them, but build the kind of personal friendships where you can discuss your hopes, dreams, and fears openly and honestly.

As far as women go, I am certainly not a ladies man, but I get along fine with them. I've shared love and friendship and all those other wonderful things with women from 3 continents between 2 of them. I have always been a good friend first. My apartment in college was a short walk from the local bars, and a few of the girls I knew, knew that they could always crash at my place if they got too drunk to drive home. And I am glad I had a reputation as someone you could trust.

I'm telling you all this to let you know that I am not your stereotypical neckbeard basement dweller, and that I am also not some charicature of the guys you see on Mad Men. But I post the way I do because I can't take these threads seriously.

What do you want me to do about this issue? Go around telling women 'hey, I play miniature games too and am not a creepy basement dweller'? How do I go about breaking the negative stereotype single handedly?

And really, who cares? Miniature gaming isn't the only thing you can do to have fun. So if a girl thinks 'well maybe I would play x-wing, but i'll probably be playing with a bunch of creepers', she is just going to find something else to do. And that isn't my loss. I can't single handedly change the world, and I don't know that I care to. I watch my own behavior, but I can't spend all my time worrying about what other people are up to.

I've decided that as much as I'd enjoy playing games with more women in the hobby, my higher goal is now to prevent anyone from being disappointed by this community in the way I have. Rather than encouraging anyone to join, the better, kinder advice is to explain the consequences of joining this place before they decide. You don't deserve the benefits that different perspectives would bring this game and you are poor ambassadors for the hobby.

Yes, please go, and take this self righteous garbage with you.

You nailed it. I am in the same situation as you, except for the international traveling.

:D

I am happy and it is cool to chat with other like minded folks, who are also humans.

If not then Ph-***** iiiit... I can go be me just fine thanks without their stupid asses.

I've only been around since just before wave four hit the shelves and even I know that there's a marked difference in the forum quality.

I used to be able to get 30 responses on a list critique. Now it's a struggle to get ten.

It usually gets better just after a release. You get more in depth theoretical discussion.

There's also, quite frankly, too many joke threads, troll threads, and threads that are at best tangentially related to X-Wing miniatures.

Back in June 2014, when I first joined these forums, I used to see a lot more list critiques, strategy debates, and other actually game-related threads.

One way to fix this is to make subforums. One for lists, one for strategy, one for random stuff, etc. That way, people like us who care about list critiques would not need to wade through 20 joke threads, etc. to find one serious thread.

I agree with you, it is a shame that you are leaving. I have been here a good long while too.

There are to many hateful know it all old farts and young stupid brats now. Then you get static from the drive by gang that come and go. FFG has allowed this to happen. When guys like me tried to argue the warnings and chill some of the bad apples I got shushed down or ignored too, so I am just about done here. I started a little G+ community all about modeling and some of the cooler stuff that some of us do with the hobby and almost nobody here joined it... so they just don't like me or they are full of whatever and just want to stay here and complain.

I am cool all day with it because I have my toys and my nice game room, and I am very happy in my sand box, but it is ass to see a nice little community go to hell the way that this one has.

It's okay. I like you. I'm just really technologically illiterate. Maybe they should an inclusive thread for me too. :P complete with a picture on how to use google plus! Haha. :).

All you have to do is go to your account and open this group and start typing and posting links and whatever like any other forum. If you can read emails then you can post in the groups you join!

I agree and disagree here. I think subforums would be a great idea.

On the other hand, there are a lot more posters in general than back when I joined, in May 2013. And with more posters you get more posts on everything. So I just see the forum moving faster and having more content in general.

For some reason, the forum has gone off the rails fairly recently. Sadly, I think this is the result if you have a popular game with a very inattentive moderation policy. You probably aren't the only the forums have driven off. The good discussion is very tough to find right now.

That will change once more ships are available for play.

Subforums are a good idea. This community definitely need a little partitioning.

Anyone expecting truly enlightened conversation should know better than to expect it on an internet forum where people can post behind screen names.

Just sayin'.

Still, sorry to see anyone go klecser.

I have zero respect for people who feel the need to make dramatic exits. This forum is better than most, but if something bothers you enough to leave, just leave.

Say hello to Emperor Palpatine for us.

You know klecser, a wise man once posted:

"But hey, I forgot that this board was chartered for only what you find relevant at the time. Next time I'll be sure to PM you and ask you whether you think i should post. Or, ya know, you could just mind your own business and not click on topics in which you don't have an interest."

If these threads cause you such aggravation, perhaps you would do well to follow your own advice?

All OP is trying to do is make a lot of us feel bad and get some attention. "Well, you all are a bunch of manchildren losers who are not worthy to spend time with me. I am taking my ball and going home."

As much as I don't like seeing posts such as these, it's absolutely beyond question that there are issues with these forums, and that stems from its users (even if it's a minority of them). I come to FFG to check news, mostly, and I often avoid the X-Wing forums because there's often little of value here. It's full of off-topic discussions, whining, and plenty of threads that are clearly wastes of time.

The worst thing is that anything and everything seems to erupt into arguments. People are just waiting to be offended here and don't care by what. It's less of a community and more of a troll cave.

There are plenty of great contributors here, lots of people doing cool stuff with lists and repainting ships, lots of good rules discussion. But there's also lots of garbage and fighting. Most X-Wing players I know won't touch the forums for this reason.

I've considered leaving, too. It's not a great place.

The best way would be to ignore the trash threads. I can't help myself, but i am sure you guys can do your part.

Also, don't the let the door hit you.

Yeah you did!

Cool!

Subforums are a good idea. This community definitely need a little partitioning.

We have asked FFG to do this for over a year... they do not care. They expect us to behave, but the problem has been that you can not expect all people to check themselves, because there are bad apples who will always be... bad.

I am not what you would think of as your typical gamer, as a person.

+1

I've avoided posting to any non list building threads because trying to engage in serious issues require lots of mental processing as english is my 3rd language.

@Klecser I've been on this forum prior to W3 and while X-Wing is the first miniature game I've played I feel as gamer as you which is proof that there are no two gamers alike and that any assumptions you make about the community are most likely due to your lack of imagination or poor travelling habits. We are not what's wrong with this hobby game , we are not adolescent and the only ugly thing in this thread is your naive philosophy and higher goal.

My goodbye message to you is don't worry, the community is fine, come to Barcelona or Madrid and you'll find plenty of nice people, beautiful ambassadors sharing the game we all love.

What are your 1st and 2nd languages? Your English skills are really good.

Sorry but i wont be sad to see you go.

Stop trying to bring your feminazi political outlook into EVERYTHING just because this whole Gamergate thing is popular atm. There is no need to try and bring up all these inclusion threads as if the X-Wing community at large is being accused of deliberately omitting anyone.

If they have an interest to play, they can play its a simple as that. Its like any of the 'geek' hobbies. X-Wing, TCG, Warhammer etc, they have a male dominated player base, but thats not to say Women arent allowed to play or are discouraged. Its usually because thats just the balance of who finds the idea of pushing toy soldiers (admit it, thats what they are), around a board interesting.

You want to see more women playing X-Wing? What if they dont want to? Do we go out to the street and pull women into gaming stories and telling them to play our game? What would u suggest?

I kept quiet in those threads but frankly i feel insulted that just because this is a male majority game, you wanna start accusing us all of misogyny? And better yet, when we dont all agree with you and hang our heads in shame, and god forbid, poke a little fun on an internet message board (the hell did you expect?), you try to Martyr yourself by leaving because your mission has failed?

Go back to white knighting on tumblr like all the other SJW's.

not worth leaving...this is an intentional attempt to marginalize the pro-female posts.

this is pretty common tactic with the "gamergate" crowd...make me wonder if we have some pro-gamergate "dudes" starting these threads.

Sorry but i wont be sad to see you go.

Well played, Godwin. Well played.
