Obligation: Buying Items

By Lukey84, in Game Masters

I have a PC that wants a disruptor rifle, he doesnt have the credits and may want to add to his obligation to get it. Any suggestion on how much obligation a disruptor rifle would add on?

I was thinking of adding it to Bounty since he is now more armed and extremely dangerous, but debt/favor would also work.

Debt or Criminal would work. Bounty doesn't really work as very few bounty hunters will risk facing down a disrupter.

He either borrowed or stole the cash for the gun and is now on the hook for it.

The gun itself wouldn't cause obligation, it causes problems in other ways.

Alternately, the guy that "sold" the disruptor can turn around and sell out the PC to the authorities. Disrupters are illegal, after all, so just carrying one is enough to earn a Criminal obligation under the right (or wrong) circumstances.

I think Disruptors are only illegal on a world by world bases, its not something the Empire has itself outlawed. It just so happens most civilized worlds have outlawed it.

But anywhere with little respect for the law has little issue with such a weapon, beyond the natural respect a Disruptor will command.

Two of my players began the game with 10 points each of debt. They were confused and thought they needed it to get a starter ship. Then I go and give them the Krayt Fang.

We represented this as a debt of 100k credits to the Hutt Cartel, who have impounded their ship, the Rainbow Dash on Nar Shaddaa.

If they don't pass Go and give up their 200 dollars, I am considering adding a bounty obligation. The debt doesn't go away, but now people will go and find you.

So consider making it debt to begin with and then if the player doesn't take paying it back seriously, throw a bounty on top of it.
