Decloaking Question

By Funkleton, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Went to my first ever games evening tonight at my recently opened LGS (who also happen to be very F) - had a great time, met nice people, took an absolute spanking in my first game, administered a spanking in my second...... but I digress

At one point, one of my opponents used his decloaking move to move through an asteroid. I questioned it (hopefully without looking like a ****) and he explained that decloaking doesn't count as a maneuver because the ship wasn't really in that position in the first place because it was cloaked - on an intuitive level this makes total sense, but at the same time, with everything I've learned about the mechanics of obstacles it's kind of counter-intuitive at the same time.

It says right on the decloak rules card that you cannot decloak if the base would overlap a ship or obstacle or if the template would overlap an obstacle.

So, basically, you can decloak through but not onto a ship and an asteroid blocks it entirely.

Thanks - I knew instinctively that something was amiss, but because I'd neglected to bring my deck of additional rules cards with me - and the fact that I was down to 2 ships with 3 hull between them - and he still had 4 ships at close to full strength - it would have seemed like something of a shortened Richard move to start lawyering the rules at that point :)

It's never too late to point out the fact that the opponent was doing something incorrectly. If you decided to have another game with him, he would have kept on doing the same thing incorrectly. I've had a few people try and use "fluff" logic to explain a game mechanic, and sometimes the two are just not comparable. There's quite a few elements to this game, that make no sense fluff-wise. Try not to fall into that trap again. Rely on the game rules, and ALWAYS take ALL your reference cards.

or a printout of the FAQ which has all the reference card rules on it.

It happens all the time especially with miniature games because of all the different pieces and each piece bringing its own rule set in addition to the core rules. Plus it is often that wording gets miss read or overlooked. Especially with players new to the experience. I don't know how many times I saw players try to reroll Range 1 Ion turret shots with Horton's pilot ability. Heck in my 2nd game I forgot that Cluster missiles were range 1-2 and thought I destroyed a ship at range 3. When I looked at the card again I realized that it shouldn't have happen so we put the other ship back on and to be fair I left the cluster missiles discarded.

I printed the Rules, Huge Ship Rules, FAQ, both Tournament Rules and bound them in a single book. 8.5 x 11. Very handy and easy to read.

My wife says I'm an over achiever. In a second book I have scanned copies of the missions and some from Mission Control that I'm fond of.

I keep both (plus another for pickup squads) in my kit. They travel together.

Smart move. You've got all your reference material in one convenient place.

Google Drive is very nice for this too. Mark items to be held on the device, and you've got the entire collection of documentation (at least all of it that's on PDF) on your phone or tablet. Very handy.

That's what I did too. Can always pull them up on my tablet or phone.

Yep, I keep them on Google Drive also. But I printed them out too. Much easier to browse, harder to index search (haha).

I don't need to worry about batteries, etc... and big enough to find the page and pass it around without worrying.

I've actually got all mine loaded onto a Kobo e-reader, that travels in the car most places I go. Whenever the wife says "I just need to 'pop' into the supermarket" I know she'll be in there for ages, so I tell her "I'll just wait in the car" and I know I've got something to read. :D

I've managed to get through quite a few novels while "waiting in the car".

So let me ask this:

Can you decloak off of the board,( I think you can) and if so; do you then do your maneuver, and hopefully get back on to the playing surface?

From the FAQ

Q: Can a ship decloak or use the barrel roll or boost actions to move outside the play area, then move back into the play area when it executes its maneuver?

A: No. If the ship is outside the play area after decloaking or performing a barrel roll or boost action, it has fled the battlefield and is immediately destroyed.

thanks, was looking up in the errata part, and the rules update, never thought to look at the actual questions of the FAQ...
