NPC Generator?

By CurseUppl, in Black Crusade

Hi guys and FFG.

I'm here to ask if someone has made a comprehensive list of all NPCs across all books or just BC, something along the lines of the bestiary found here .

Problem is, while I have all the books, both physical and on PDF form, it is tedious looking it all up.

Does such an NPC Generator exist, where a GM can pull up templates such as a guardsman or randomly generate NPC stats?

I understand there's a copyright issue, since if one existed, there'd be no need for the rulebooks (but seriously, who'd play this game without getting the rulebooks anyway?)

All I ask is, if an NPC generator doesn't exist, that FFG either puts all NPC data/templates into machine readable form, that we can either buy or download, so that we could make such a generator, without having to go through all the books manually.

Even better would be FFG creating an online app, or something similiar.

But, as said earlier, I'm sure a person could make this and distribute it, though it would likely run into copyright problems.

Character creators are one thing, since they're only a small part of the rule books, create an NPC Generator with all that data would involve at least 50% of all content.

Long winded post, anyway. Thoughts?

To me, the simplest way to create an NPC Generator is simply a series of randomized dice rolls. Each stat could be X+2d10, where X could be 25, 30, or even 50 based on how strong the NPC is supposed to be. From there, there could be a randomized set of Skills and Talents based on what their highest stats are, such as some Weapon Trainings for a WS/BS character or some Tech-Use for an INT-leaning character. Then you could have a pool of random equipment they could draw from.

I can probably whip up something crude for you if you want. It shouldn't be too hard with the power of Excel. I also don't think that fan-based resources are a copyright issue as long as they're non-profit and don't copy the books verbatim. The ones I can think of don't explain combat at all, for example, which is a pretty significant chunk of these games.

Thanks for your reply. I considered the same thing with excel and I admit your suggestion is pretty neat.

Do you have to happen all that skills in an easy, machine readable form?

Here is a very rudimentary generator, provided via Dropbox. The Talents and such are... inadequate, to put it lightly. My technical know-how is quite limited at this point, so this is about the extent of my abilities.

You can re-roll all of the characteristics and NPC class by going to any blank cell and pressing "Delete" or something. Almost any action will re-roll everything. If you want to know how the functions work:

=RANDBETWEEN(X,Y): This function generates a number between X and Y inclusively. My sheet refers to cells G2 and G3, or 2 and 20. You can nudge the the numbers to be like 4 and 40 if you want to simulate 4d10, otherwise my default is just 2d10.

=IF(X ="1","Y",X="2","Z"...): This clumsy function is how I generated the Assassin class, though there are 9 other class skeletons. To try and put it simply:

  1. Is X equal to 1? If so, put out value Y. If not...
  2. Is X equal to 2? If so, put out value Z. If not...
  3. Is X equal to 3? If so... etc.

C14 picks a number between 1 and 10 inclusive. If C14 is "1", D14 will say "Assassin". If C14 is "2", D14 will say "NPC Class 2", and so on. Does that make sense?

There's also a stat check concerning weapon choice. If the NPC's Weapon Skill is higher than his Ballistic Skill, the NPC will have a melee weapon. The opposite is true if the NPC's BS is higher or if his WS and BS are equal.

I am not particularly proud of this generator, but hopefully it can inspire you to do more. Personally, I like to craft every major NPC by hand while lesser NPCs just get a flat template.

Looks pretty good, though.

I'll look into it. If I choose to improve it/make my own, I'll be sure to upload it here.

I am currently in the process of compiling a up to date (as of the 7th editions codices). It is balanced for Space Marines, and is an attempt to unify all the various versions of each of the npcs available. I'm nearly done, just have to finish the Astra Militarum (IG), Space Marine chapter specific npcs (like the sanguinary priest), updating the Sisters of Battle and Grey Knights, and finishing up the Tau. So when I'm done, I'll be posting it on the forums. If you'd like an early copy of the Eldar or the Dark Eldar or Tyranids, just let me know.

I'm confused. Do you mean the table top rules or the FFG RPG books?

'Cause I'm interested in an NPC generator for FFG RPG books (mainly Black Crusade).

The NPC list is for the FFG RPG books, however many weapons, vehicles, and units aren't really depicted in the game, and those that are have very different versions of each dependent on which system you use. For example, there are 3 different versions of the Warp Spider, 2 versions from Rogue Trader and one from Deathwatch. I'm creating a unified NPC list that uses each of the Codex Armies from the table top, with their various armaments. It is balanced for Space Marine as depicted in Black Crusade, but is also meant to be usable for Only War Campaigns.

So yes its for the RPG books. I'll be posting a full version of it in the Black Crusade and Only War sections when I've finished updating and creating everything. That said I do not mind sending out early copies of it.

The best NPC generator I've ever seen is the GM's brain...
