Tought for food, FFG

By KILODEN, in X-Wing

ok,

1/270 or 1/286 scale ground combat

so, you have 2 boards, 1 X-Wing board and 1 ground combat board.

in the center of the X-Wing board is a 6x6 inch counter that represents the area where the ground board is. if a ship passes over or lands on the counter it can make a ground attack and in turn be attacked from the ground.

I would totally buy the hell out of something like that. it can be played as a stand alone game or tie the 2 together for epic battles.

uh, that's not 1/285th scale

think of battletech or EPIC for star wars

That imperial assaul game.. is why you will never see a ground aspect version of X wing... besides its a space combat game and has no need of ground forces.. probably why he posted the link to imp assault...

Personally I hope they never do ground rules for X wing. It's not needed.

Almost every ship if not every ship in XW is capable of atmospheric combat. I've flown around shooting air defense turrets...

I've also wrote up some basic ground defense rules.

I ran a custom scenario like this once.

Table 1 (Space Battle) had Imperials trying to fly Lambda Troop Transports across the board to reinforce a ground assault.

Table 2 (Defensive Cannons) Rebels have two Ion Cannons that can fire at the Imperial Reinforcements. Defending them helps the Rebels in the Space Battle, while the imperials were trying to blow them up.

The biggest issue was "turn-syncing:" coming up with a fair way for a ship in one game to affect something in the other. There were a lot of factors (player speed, uneven # of players, # of ships, etc) that got the games out of sync.

In my game, the space battle set the pace. If the cannons existed during the "End Phase" of the space battle, they got to shoot. This was a mistake because the players were able to manipulate the rules and stall the space battle until the Ion Cannon's got destroyed. Even though the game with the ion cannons went 7 turns, they only "fired" twice.

If I had to do it again, I would make the Ion Cannons fire at the End Phase on their game, interrupting whatever player action was happening at the Space Battle. Kind of a funky rule, but it prevents people from stalling.

I get that some people have writtem their own rules, and that some may like that aspect of the game.

For you guys, FFG has given you your ground game. They won't need to add it to the Space combat game. Yes I know all the ships can be used in atmo, but it isn't designed around that aspect. It's all space combat.

Personally, I dont want to see it in the X wing game. I feel its an unnecessary addition to the game, especially when they just gave us the ground aspect everyone has been wishing for. Maybe not in the exact way some may have wanted, but you now have it.

Could they throw it in later.. sure.. I'm betting, and hoping.. they won't.

This, also, isn't the first time this subject has come up..

When I first used X-wing. I used it in a COD fashion to represent stuff the players weren't doing while they were D20 stormcommandos on the ground. To preserve the integration i kept these two seperate - however atmospheric combat was used, targetting gun towers, Rebel tanks and atmos. craft.

No reason why X-wing can't have this.

No reason at all. I mean mechanically wise, it's just using a green matt rather than a black one and maybe adding some very slow vehicles.

I understand what you did, and possibly still continue to do... what I'm saying Is... many of us got this game because we like space combat in the Star Wars universe. And that's where it ends.. please feel free to add whatever you want to it, or add it to other games as you desire. Just dont expect FFG to cater to every whim.

Fornthose that wanted a capitol ship game... they made one, mand for all the people railing on about a ground forces game... they made one... but to expect them to throw it all in to their space combat game is expecting a lot and asking a lot.

I think they are doing fine with how they are working this genre...

As for the 'no reason X wing cant have this' it's unnecessary to have ground forces in a space combat game.

I get that some people like that.. even played a game like it myself.. whatni liked about the game I played was that there were no ground forces, just ground targets, and it was defended by other ships..

Completely fine with those points. Basically you are saying "I prefer x-wing to rogue squadron". To be honest so did I, completely fair points.

If however they do release a special battle of hoth expansion or whatever - which you know, they might. Feel free not to buy into it.

It's always a possibility, but I think with the new games they aren't likely to do them.

If they do.. I even kight get it for the one off game to run some night, but I'm not really interested in a ground combat game, overall.. I may use the models for an RPG that I am getting started soon. I like using miniatures for those as it gives a good visual for the players.

Heck if the players have a personal transport and I have a model for it, I'm not above throwing out a YT 1300 on the table if it enhabces their playing experience. I dont think I'll play a game of X wing to figure out our space combat games though, as it could TPK unintentionally.

Yeah. I kept X-wing out of DIRECT combat with the player forces.

Best example I can give is their ground team were awaiting EVAC so a TIE squadron had to clear the skies. If they didn't clear the skies then no evac and having to run away on foot/evade capture/conflict. There was another point where the TIE's shot down a transport and the team could use speeder bikes to get to the crash site.

They meshed, but were not direct.
