R5-K6

By Cununculus, in X-Wing

Poor R5-K6 seems to be the least usd astromech at the moment.

But, with the Y-wing title in the most wanted pack on the way, imagine Dutch Vander, with the title, an ion turret and R5-K6

After movement select TL

Hand one TL to a friendly pilot

Attack with primary weapon, use TL

Throw die, if you roll well, get a new TL

Hand one TL to a second friendly pilot

Attack with secondary turret weapon, use TL

Throw die, if you roll well, get a new TL

Hand one TL to a third friendly pilot

Sure it won't work fully every time. But if you have a bit of luck you can toss around TL's to spare.

I am not mathwinger enough to do a decent calculation. But might we see a revivwl of R5-K6 in Rebel Y-wings?

Maybe! Idk if that's better than R7-T1 on Duch but that certainly doesn't sound too bad.

I like the R5-K6 but I hate my dice

Average number of additional TLs generated with Dutch alone: 1

Average number of additional TLs generated with Dutch + R5-K6: 1.375

Average number of additional TLs generated with Dutch + R5-K6 + BTL-A4: 1.516

It's definitely a case of diminishing returns (in fact, they diminish at a rate of 3/8), and unfortunately it doesn't look like enough added value for me to fill up Dutch's astromech slot with R5-K6.

I really like that bot, if only his effect would work on a Focus and an Evade result. Then I would use him all the time, even if that would mean he goes to 3 points.

K6's problem is that he's a worse FCS, but he's also Wave 1 when they didn't know how good/bad things were.

Remember that Vander is still getting his own target lock though, so it'll actually look more like this:

"Dutch" Vander + Target Lock action: 2 Target Locks acquired,

"Dutch" Vander + Target Lock action + R5-K6: 2.750 Target Locks acquired,

"Dutch" Vander + Target Lock action + R5-K6 + BTL-A4: 3.032 Target Locks acquired.

Still diminishing returns, of course, but not as significantly so when you factor in the target lock he gets for himself.

This is why you don't see R5-K6.

You are not the first one to try R5-K6 with Dutch to make a TL battery. The problem lies within R5-K6 needing to roll in order to use his effect and as many players found out 3 out of 8 is not that good of odds even if it is only for 2 points. You also want to be spending TL in attempts to trigger R5-K6 effect and with the Y-wings maneuver dial that is less than likely. So you would want in on Ion Dutch inside a free action passing squad to give Dutch as many chances to TL as possible.

I think he might be ok on Y-wings using the BTL-A4 title so you can use a target lock potentially on both your attacks. A bit of overlap with Horton's ability, but it could be useful with any Y using the title I would think.

Fire Control System gives a more certain return, as does the A4 Agromech. But rebel Y's can't take either.

The Y-Wing expansion pack seems to suffer from wave 1 try-outs. Pilots are weaker. Or, are the more recent expansions a little too strong in comparison? (Not OP, no drama here, but stronger)

Back on topic: above are presented two calcullations, does the second one give enough incentive to use our little droid-friend?

A max of 6 TL's should get you somewhere.
