Where is my Biggles!?!??

By Kyla, in X-Wing

Okay, I wanted to start out saying I have posted in the big X-Wing trade section, to no avail, so I am trying one last time get the word out to ANYONE with a Biggles Darklighter card.

I have tried EVERYTHING to get one ... scoured EBay, asked in forums, FLEW TO THE UK, but at every turn I have been thwarted by chance. It's to the point where I just want to curl up with my kittens and a box of Häagen-Dazs.

If anyone is interested in trading, I have a lot of cards, tokens, dials, templates and miscellany to offer - I'm even willing to buy one at this point (as evidenced by Ebay trolling). Please, there has to me some sympathetic friend out there who holds my mustached hero ....

Help me (insert name here) you're my only hope!

I thought the whole Biggles thing was made up...

Don't they just ship the same english kits to the UK?

Likewise. Or are you talking about the actual Biggs promo in the current Tournament kit? Can't help you either way, as I'm not looking to give mine up(otherwise I wouldn't be able to fly Wedge/Luke/Biggs with all promo cards...incidentally it bugs me a bit that Luke isn't a close in headshot like the other two), but I'm pretty sure "Biggles" doesn't exist.

There's books that feature James "Biggles" Bigglesworth that were popular in the UK among kids some tiem ago. On BGG there was something about Biggs having the name Biggles in the UK and X-Wing pilot cards with that name on it.

But IIRC that was all a joke and there was no such thing.

Now that I think about it, we missed a golden opportunity to mess with him.

"I love mine, even have the alt-art version, looks great!"

I have seen a few people on here post that there was a biggles card that was in the early releases in the U.K.

Well, the Biggles card is real, but I haven't seen an alt-art one (although they are probably in the wild by now). As for the OP, I'm sorry I don't have one for you. Have you tried BGG?

I've got a pair of Biggs promos...but Biggles is actually a thing? Huh.

I believe it was early core sets only, be surprised if you found one in current core sets available in UK stores

The original release in the UK (the one that epically sold out) all had the Biggles card. They then started shipping US sets over to the UK to fill the demand. Subsequent reissues were all the "Biggs" version so now it creeps further into the void of urban legend.

No Promo cards of Biggles were made - it was only that first issue to the UK. My guess is with the rapacious appetite of the community and the already stressed printings, they decided it wasn't worth keeping the UK version different.

That would require her to no have done her homework on the card, though I may be blonde I am not easily "messed with."

Board Game Geek is where I initially heard about it but missed the boat on it so to speak.

Look at how the name isn't centered in its box. It's a photoshop.

Clearly photoshopped and not very well look at that s, sloppy at 16 I could do better on ancient Apple Macs in collage.

Hmmm

Yup, guys the 'biggles' card is a joke.

It doesnt exist.

FFG would not be allowed licence wise to alter a named character from ANH for comedy value.

Likewise all the 'grey squadron' Y wing cards are spelt 'Gray' with American spelling as its the same 'English language' set in both countries.

Where possible gaming companies try and reduce the amount of multi language aspects of packaging and production (its why GW moved to multinational boxs with lettered price codes...because it saved us a fortune in time and money), there is no need to make an 'English' version of xwing... there wont be a New Zealand, Irish, Australian or Canadian language version either :)

Given the BGG thread where someone was adamant the card exists sprang up in April i'd imagine it was a wind up on a smaller gaming group for April 1st that by mid April had done the rounds.

I have about 20 mates who play xwing, most of us have more than one core set... *nobody* i know has a 'biggles' card, in fact nobody i know in the UK who plays outside of my group has ever seen one.

As said Biggles was a boys adventure hero WWI/WWII pilot... plenty of books with titles like 'Biggles Flyies Again' and 'Biggles Flies Undone' :)

But you didnt email FFG to check it wasnt the hoax it is first?

That would have been my first port of call.

Show me an email from FFG that

1. Says they have the licence/rights to change core OT character names to make them funnier

2. Spend *thousands* making a separate version of the core game and all the associated shipping ballache just to take the 'u' out of a few words like 'colour' and spell 'grey' differently

3. The card exists.

I really hope you flew to the UK for work or a holiday and not just to get a rare (actually non existent) gaming card... :)

I completely understand the skepticism from some but, having lived in the UK when the game was originally released, I can confirm it is real.

Here's the thread where I realised that US players didn't know about it:

I can't really answer questions on it because I don't know. We know that there are differing versions of X-Wing for differing countries. Prototype Pilot in Germany is called something like Test Pilot and so on.

It seems that there were early versions with Biggles before it became Biggs but that's guesswork. You see even in the BGG thread that some people traded them.

It's worth bearing in mind that it wasn't just Biggs - Gray Squadron was Grey Squadron as well. Kyla, I'll talk to some people in the UK and see if we can find one for you but after the flurry of trading from the BGG article, I think you'll be hard-pressed to find one. But I'll try.

But it's the same poorly photoshopped card that's pictured in the BGG thread - hardly convincing

Honestly, why doesn't some one just email FFG and ask if the UK and US editions differ.

And ask if there is or ever was a 'biggles darklighter' card.

I'd put a fiver on the answer being no in either case.

Once again I get to state my favorite quote (thank you Gadge) ...

"Hey, Babalugats. We got a bet here."

would the fact that no-one has bothered to ask FFG about this represent a failure to communicate ?

Good. Very good. Someone truly understands.

Cool hand Luke?

Long time since i've seen that film but i'm guessing thats what you're both referring to?

Well, message sent to FFG. In the end it is the easiest way to get an answer once and for all. I'll let you all know what they say so we can get a final answer on it.

And no, I didn't go to the UK *just* for a card ... I went because the scenery is gorgeous and it's a hop, skip and a jump to Ireland, Scotland and Europe at large. It's closer to France from England than it is for me to get across my home state of Texas ... which is really sad when you think about it.
