2014 Worlds Results

Day 2 update: a bunch of unclaimed spots today -- about 40 -- so they held a lottery to see which players from day 1 could play again in day 2. A lot of strong players got back in, but sadly, no Rick/National champion :-(

I'm playing (2-0 so far, yay) so haven't had a chance to check out lists.

Huh. That's interesting. It's not surprising that Day 2 had more no-shows, honestly... I suspect many of the players who had to travel would have tried to save the day by playing on Friday, and those are the ones who'd have more fragile attendance.

Was there any opportunity for someone to sign up for (and play in) both flights before this? I thought you just had one chance at it... Really don't like the Flight One people getting second chances if that's the case. Doesn't particularly affect me personally, but this is the kind of thing that leaves bad tastes after big events.

They said from the start if there were open spots those that didn't make the cut the first day had a shot at getting back in on day 2

Fair enough then. Still feels a bit unfair, but so long as it was announced really nothing to complain about. Sozin's comment made it feel like it was an unexpected thing.

I think the number of slots was a surprise.

Quick note...

Ira Mayers was X-Wing Champion of 2014 NOVA Open.

See him in action at the final table here:

the Lambda player probably could have avoided flying off the board with a sharp turn, was he stressed? (50:42) he chose 1 bank which put him one move from auto destruction off the board.

If any of the players from the first flight who play in the second and make the cut, they are going to be exhausted by tomorrow. This event is part endurance race, so fatigue will play a factor in their games tomorrow.

Did anyone get what that Carnor 4 ties list was from yesterday?

How did it do? Definitely lost the game I saw though.

I really, really want to see this 4x Bomber (w/Proximity Mine)+ Shuttle list.

From memory it was:

35 Carnor, PTL, Stealth, Hull

20 Howl, Swarm Tac

18 Mauler, VI

15 Black Sqn, DTF

12 Academy

If it's the player I think it was, he's a local guy and buddy of mine but I didn't see his name in the top list there and am not sure what his final record was.

His was a local and his name was Michael (from memory..). Great guy and a pleasure to play with. His dice didn't help him much though so it was an uphill fight against Whisper.

I think if he had turned Mauler into Whisper for the opening engagement anything could have happened.

I think you are about to get your wish.

This is true. All-day tournaments are very mentally exhausting. Doing a back-to-back? Yeesh.

It was a sad match...poor Sable got roped into the asteroids and Typo just flew circles around him..

I think he rolled 2 sets of attack dice, and 1 set of mine dice all match....pretty hard to win that way. :(

Anyone happen to take a picture of the rankings after Swiss tonight?

A lot of swarms today, not as many Falcons (I only faced a Chewie in Round 6), and actually not a ton of Phantoms besides the top players. Lots of BBBZ, BBBBZ, BBBY lists, and a few 7-8 ship Z Swarms. Looks like swarms are back!

i think tie swarms have a winnable matchup versus both Falcon and Phantom lists. many other lists out there will have a much better (or worse) matchup versus phantoms/falcon.

for my money Phantom + mini swarm is perhaps the best option for versatility versus the field and may be superior to standard swarm lists as well - of course it depends a lot on the pilot.

Except somehow Fat Han lists are beating TIE swarms. Paul just beat Dallas today in the final round. 7 ties vs fat Han. WWent to time and Paul won.

Having an advantage does not equal auto-win. Plus, there are variations in the Fat Han. Some may be better at handling the swarm than others.

96 points, gets initiative over phantoms.

R2-D2 over gunner? no Engine Upgrade? thats some really interesting choices.

I did not suggest that having an advantage = auto-win. I was saying that TIE Swarms have an advantage, and when it's being played by 2 of the best swarm players in the world (Doug Kinney and Dallas Parker) against 2 top players playing Fat Han (Ira and Paul), you's think the results would be closer than it was today and yesterday.
