2014 Worlds Results

By MajorJuggler, in X-Wing

I looked up the biggest tournament wins that each of the players had. I don't have names for Regionals, so if a name is blank, and you happen to know of any major tournament wins / placement that they had, let me know and I will post it here.

Joe McGlinchey: Cambridge, MA regional winner (This is me, if you want to link my forum handle)

Bronson Wonkew: Cambridge, MA regional 2nd place.

Cool! I will have to look you guys up sometime. One of these days I'll get out to Plaineville to play. I live about an hour South of Boston and am all-but-dissertation, so can't really sacrifice an entire weekend to play.

Did FFG delete the finals from their Twitch broadcast history? I can't seem to find it this morning.

Ryan Weissinger, Plano, TX Regional winner. Keep an eye out for Nathan. He was able to choreograph my decloak even with Advance Sensors. Awesome player.

Chris Jenkins here, you've got my nationals spot already.

Only other background information of note is that I'm the volunteer TO for the FFG Game Center.

As a side comment, I found the convergent evolution of Captain Typo's Han + Jan list and my own to be very interesting, I do have to give credit to Theorist over on Team Covenant for my Jan load out. For me, Han's load out came about from wanting to have offensive and defensive actions every round to make the most of Jan's extra attack die.

Thanks again for getting all that huge amount of data together. You can link to this user name for Dallas Parker. Not sure if you want user the user link directly: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/user/210661-texx/

I'm home sick (between 15 consecutive premiere Worlds games, all but 3 or 4 going to time at 75min with a 7 Tie swarm and being in super cold weather for a SoCal guy is grueling). So I may be able to type up some bat reps/summaries of my games (I have all the lists written down from the 15 games, so not sure how much detail I can do for each). I'll definately write-up my match with Morgan, that was extremely close finish on the last dice roll.

The video of the 2014 World's final is here: http://www.twitch.tv/ffglive/b/586727040 It also has some footage of the Imperial semi-final match beforehand.

I've never made it to the Plainville store, but we've got a group that plays in Cambridge pretty frequently. Bill Wadden came up with us too. He was joking that he must be the only top 32 without even a store championship.

If you want to get a game together sometime I would be all for that. I am a big fan of the work you've been doing in these threads to get the stats together.

Awesome guys, thanks! I'll get your names linked later tonight, along with your CV, er.... tournament wins. :)

Feel free to pass the word along to encourage others to do the same!

Aside from being able to make "pew pew" noises with Star Wars ships in a legitimately competitive game, the best thing about this game is certainly the community!

Your AdS on Whisper makes me want to add it on Echo to try it out. I can't even imagine the possibilities right now. ;-)

I'll second what Dallas said - thanks for all your efforts and data collection! Please feel free to link my name to my name..

Dallas - That match against you was my favourite of the tournament and summarised what X-Wing should be. We had a cracking match of cat and mouse, with traps and feints, big rolls that could have gone either way but all played with a relaxed smile and jokes between rolls and dial section. The game literally came down to the last dice roll after time was called and it just as easily could have been you up there in the final to have a 2013 rematch. Great to meet you and what a game!

Yep, I'd rate it as my 2nd favorite match of X wing I've ever had. Being able to see that both people are having a blast helps take the edge off of how stressful a high-stakes game could be. I'll be trying to do a write up on it eventually, so feel free to correct me if I get something wrong from memory.

With all the Fat Han talk, for some reason I only saw 1 Falcon list per day in Flight 1 and 2. Might be my MOV since I brought the almost naked Bounty Hunter, Doom shuttle, and Echo. I usually lose the shuttle and sometimes the BH.

Not sure why people don't use the Firespray as much, as mine single handedly saved me a few times by killing a bunch of ships after Echo got one-shot.

I was gladdened that there were a lot of variety in the flights, looking around and playing different builds. I did play a lot of Whisper swarms and Whisper/Soontir combos, but ultimately, when you look at the top 32, it was painfully too many Falcons.

I counted fr the day in Flight 2: I played against all Rebels, flew against 7 Falcons, 17 Z95s, 1 Hwk, 1 B, 1 X and one Y...

I felt like saying "Headhunters (mutton) yesterday, headhunters (mutton) yesterday, and blimey if it doesn't like like headhunters (mutton) again termorrow" -The Hobbit

I placed 3rd after the swiss rounds today. Lost to Ira (last name?). Saw a lot of interesting squads today. Top tables had several Falcons.

last name Mayers :) its spelled wrong in so many of the reports that at this point getting it straightened out is probably not going to happen, lol.

I'll fix it here shortly! I assume that must be you, so I'll link your name to your FFG username here.

Quick note...

Ira Mayers was X-Wing Champion of 2014 NOVA Open.

See him in action at the final table here:

the Lambda player probably could have avoided flying off the board with a sharp turn, was he stressed? (50:42) he chose 1 bank which put him one move from auto destruction off the board.

that shuttle was dead with 1 hull left anyway. i shot at it and killed it. when you see him putting the template down he was just curious about whether it would have lived...but i wasn't gonna let it live anyway :) originally this was the list i was going to run at worlds as well (echo, vessery, backstabber) but at one of our local tournaments echo got 1-shot twice in four rounds somehow and I just took it as a sign to stop working so hard against the meta. 2 straight months of decloaking echo was starting to feel like work anyway and I wasn't having quite as much fun. i had a ton of fun flying han around boosting out of arcs and whatnot. you play better when youre having fun i think :)

Crap, that is my fault, I am sorry

Yeah, I was stubborn and took Echo, Bounty Hunter, and Shuttle to Worlds, because I didn't want to just play the meta and wanted to prove that other builds worked. I had tons of fun flying Echo and did decently, but in Echo got 1 shot 4 times over the weekend that determined a few key games. Once by Wes from R3 (while I was cloaked), 3 v 5 and I rolled 5 blanks, hit hit crit, crit was direct hit. Another was by a Tala from R3 when I had 2 hull left. 2 v 5 and I rolled no evades. Another was a B-Wing, 4 v 4, and finally by Carnor from R3 through a rock, 3 v 6 and I rolled all blanks and eyeballs (and didn't have a focus).

I think I need to take some time off to play Rebels with shields and hull for a little bit. ;-)

Was Paul's semi finals game good? It was basically a mirror match.

um...it was good for him? lol. personally i found it sad. having tested against it, i knew the only way was to win on time once all the z's were destroyed. i toyed with the idea of sending 1 z95 north to run and keep the others down with han, so he would have to chase one and then i could split the z and han and hopefully keep enough space between us circling that he would not kill han in time. i had ten minutes left to live to win. but as i said, if we are circling the map and i am hoping he rolls poorly since i need 4 damage to hurt him, we aren't playing xwing, we are playing monopoly. i really wanted to match against one of the other two players, i felt i had a very good chance in either of those matchups. my strategy against swarms with han has been winning and i tested against whisper the night before with paul running it and destroyed it. oh well :)

Well, I corrected your name on the first post, so at least it is right in this thread!

I also linked to it like this: Ira Mayers . Thanks for posting battle reports too, I also linked those.

That has been my exact same experience with and solution to my use of high agility ships :P

Love your handle!

Yeah, Decimator will be a nice relief to playing Echo, haha.

Thank you sir, done, and congratulations on your Top 32 finish!

Also, I linked Doug Kinney (hothie) since he bombarded us with day 1 updates under his name. :)
