I'll be maintaining this thread to record and analyze results of the 2014 Worlds tournament. My goal is to get all of the results from each round for each of the three days. I'll fill in more information as I pull in all the data and start analyzing it.

FFG Worlds is the highest level of X-wing Tournament play, and takes place at Fantasy Flight Games headquarters in November. The tournament hierarchy is:

Legal expansions: through Rebel Aces
Swiss Flight 1 (6 rounds): Thursday, November 6, 2014. Max 128 players.
Swiss Flight 2 (6 rounds): Friday, November 7, 2014 Max 128 players.
Top 32 Single Elimination: Saturday, November 8, 2014

The top 16 from each flight will then advance to play in Saturday's event, a 32 person single elimination tournament. For more information, see this 2014 Worlds Tournament Update .

All values are based on percentage of points spent. For example, a 60 point Han Solo in a 100 point Han Solo would result in 60% of all points spent on turrets. An 18 point Howlrunner in a 98 point squad would represent 18.37% of points spent for that squad.

spent: % of squad points spent, equal weighting
weight1: % of squad points spent, weighting = attendance - placement *
weight2: % of squad points spent, weighting = attendance / placement *

* For Squads that won at least one game in elimination, attendance = 2-day total, and placement = final elimination placement. Otherwise attendance = qualifying day attendance, and placement = Swiss placement.

Weighting #1 is a good measure of how well something generally does through the tournament. If something lands around the middle of the pack, then weighting #1 will be about the same as % spent.

Weighting #2 is very top-heavy, heavily favoring results from the top of the tournament winners. This is a good measure of how well something drives the high-level competitive meta game.

This is of course assuming there are zero ties. I have been managing magic the gathering tournaments long enough to know don't ever assume you have qualified.

Technically correct. I forgot about ties. If enough people (3+) went 4-0-2 (4 wins, 0 losses, 2 ties) at 22 points, they would beat out someone that went 5-1 with two modified victories (21 points).

Edit: But even in that case, there should be one less 5-1 player for every player that went 4-0-2 or 4-1-1. I.e. the 4-0-2 player would have been 5-1 with a win instead of a draw. So I think that 21 points should still qualify. I'll let some TO's weigh in on this that have more experience.

To end in a tie you need to both have the same score at time. It is very rare. I have the full Canadian results, and it happened once. They had 59 players and 5 rounds of Swiss.

So if you get 21 points, you should qualify.

FYI. Stuart Wilson from FFG will be handling the scorekeeping, and he has graciously agreed to send the tournament data at the end of each night (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), so we will have full details on the MoV of each individual matchup, for all rounds.

The full squad lists will be coming later the following week after Worlds, it will take some time for him to scan in all of the squad registration sheets and email them to me. But I am sure the community will be able to fill in most of the top squads live.

Stuart may also put Saturday's bracket up live on Challonge.com and keep it updated as the tournament progresses, although that will depend on how chaotic the day turns out and if he has time.

Nope, they lock you in a cage until only one person remains. The final Championship table is untimed!

Right right, but simultaneous fire is still a possibility. Or did they declare a winner along with the Corran/Fel's Wrath shenanigans?

Don't you have to have the exact same score to tie? Has that happened in previous tournaments with x-wing?

I have played 50 X-Wing games in tournaments (I keep track) and I've had one tie. So yeah, they happen, but not often at all.

If anytime during the elimination bracket two players tie, either by killing each other completely via simultaneous fire or by having the same amount of points remaining at the end of a timed round, the winner is the player with initiative.

Yup. So I guess if you run into a match up that looks as though a tie may be a possibility, its always a little safer to take initiative if you have opportunity to do so.
