I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a pbp game. I'll confess that I've never played in this style of game before but I would love to start playing DW. Or if anyone knows of a group looking for players that would work as well I suppose.
DW play by post
I would love to join a game as a player. Never played this either: I'm always the GM.
Oops, wrong thread :/
Edited by Frosty71I might be interested in giving it a shot, as long a I'm not the GM.
As long as I'm not the GM and have a laptop, which I do not.
I might not actually mind being a GM actually, I have a bunch of missions I have saved in piles of graph paper.
So that's four people so far? Cool.
I would do this! However, I also am always the GM (I actually have 2 play by post going right now), and thus I would prefer to be a player.
I'll play. My group is decidedly against the role-playing aspect of the game only interested in playing it like a First Person shooter... So I am in. I will help with the GMing. Not full time but I will run a mission here and there.
What if we take all of the "Always a GM and never a player" from thus thread and each take turns running a mission?
It would be myself, Frosty71, Lord Master Igneus, and DavinHeracles taking turns GMing.
Sounds good to me.
I've never done play by post before, but would be interested in trying it out. Are there some general rules of thumb for it or is it all up to the GM?
You know I have no idea. It has been so long since I played a play by post. But to be honest I dont think that there really is a difference between a pbp and around the table, besides the obvious ones. There are two threads in a pbp one for in character and one for out of character posts. Besides the nothing really it is partially GM dependent but in the end it is still the same rule system.
TL;DR
No real differences that are not inherent in the different format.
P.S. do we have enough players to start running and who will be GM for the first mission?
Edited by DavinHeraclesI have run more than a few pbp games in my day. The biggest single difference between pbp and table is time. Pbp run much slower and tend to bog down in combat. That kills interest.
Fron a player perspective if everyone here plays we have enough for 2 games. I find for deathwatch about 3-4 players is ideal for pbp games. I tend to run them smaller if I can.
Should we perhaps start rolling up characters?
More specifically, how are the character sheets handled? Do I need to write all the information out?
Also, is die rolling done by the player or the GM? I would imagine it would be more efficient and fair if it were the GM as some actions depend on another character's reaction. That way the player could say what they want to do with their turn and the GM could then play it out even if there are multiple die rolls involved. Then again, that may create an issue for using fate points to reroll one of the earlier tests, since the player would already know what happens on the later ones. I think I'm starting to see how combat can get bogged down.
Also, is it a problem if I do not personally own a rule book? The group I played with before had a digital copy and we just printed off the relevant sections pertaining to each character's skills, which have since been discarded (because everybody died). I am familiar enough with the game that I ought to be able to get through most situations without it.
If we're going to start making characters I should ask: Consecrator Librarian or Ultramarine Apothecary? I'm kind of torn over which I want to do, so I'll go with whatever the group needs more.
We need a few things before everyone starts rolling things up.
1) where are we playing? I have a deathwatch game forum that I can create a new subsection in if need be. There are myriad other options as well.
2) dice rolling. I recommend Invisible Castle, but some forums also have built-in rollers.
3) who is gming?
4) how many players do we have? Some om this list have not responded in a while, and we need to be careful not to take too many.
1) What forum is that if I may ask?
2) Invisible Castle is Fine
3) I have only run one actual game of Deathwatch. But why not jump right in and get it done.
4) I am in no idea what to bring though. I am thinking either Blood Angels Assault Marine or Salamander Devastator.
Forum is just a freeforum I set up. I should be able to set it up to accomodate us in the next few days.
So who is playing and who is gming?
Clearly, I cannot GM since I do not have a copy of the rule book. I have also never GMed before and would rather not have my first experiment in that be through a medium I haven't used before.
If the campaign lasts long enough, and I decide to buy a rule book, I may be willing to GM at some point in the future, but for now I'll just be a player.
I can GM and play I guess. I don't know that I want to GM the first mission, but if it comes down to it I will GM the first mission.
Edited by DavinHeraclesWhat's wrong with running the game here? We all already have accounts and it's such a rare occurance where using a forum or virtual dice roller is better than the honor system (those things cause so much confusion and learning curve). Also, I'd like to opt out of ever GMing: I've been nothing but the GM for over a year now and it's always because nobody else wants to GM.
My only issue with running the game here is that we would need 2 threads - 1 for tracking characters and 1 for playing, and it gets awkward when the threads get comingled with other threads. I'm ok with honor system though. It does make the game easier.
As to GMing- I can run the first mission to get us off the ground. Davin can take second. Frosty, you just said you'd like to opt out of GMing, but could I convince you to take the helm for mission 3? I intend to build my character and run him as an NPC for the missions I GM. He won't do anything other than roll dice for tests while I am GMing.
So it seems to me that we have 4 people-
myself
Frosty
Davin
Shadow
I'm running a PBP on Dark Heresy 2 forums. Just check out that to see how it can work here. We tend to separate OOC and IC using some sort of visual clue like brackets or something. And I'm really not flexible on that anymore because the last time I compromised, everyone ditched me and went back to DnD: Off the top of my head I have or am presently done GMing for Vampire/Werewolf at least twice, DH2, Only War twice, Cyberpunk 2020 twice, about five Call of Cthulhu's, and two Delta Green's... All without ever getting to be a player for more than three "sessions". I can offer lots of advice on GMing, which is why I'm adding suggestions on where to run this game, but yeah...
I can completely understand where you are coming from. If I was running that many games I would probably pull my hair out. So no worries we will figure it out. I am good with the honor system as well. These forums aren't exactly the epitome of lost threads lol. I am sure we can run it here without issue.
