What do you do when you have too many ships?

By RagnarokSquadron, in X-Wing

If you feel you have to many theres ebay or i read some where a while back aboit donateing them to the uso. Ill have to see is if i can find the info

There wouldn't happen to be an extra Tantive IV with spare cards, would there?

It started innocently enough. A local Facebook group posting. Someone is looking to get out of the game. He's got a handful of ships, but there's a juicy YT-1300 there. "I want a second one of those!" I think to myself. Make contact, set up the exchange of goods.

But as these things often do, one things leads to another. His friends are wanting out as well. They've got ships to go through. The pictures and lists are all running together now, but hey, a second Firespray never hurt anybody! I'm sure it'll be okay.

Fast forward to last night, and I'm holding a package that weighs about 14 pounds. Ships. Dials. Tokens. Range rulers. Movement templates. Cards. Bases. Tokens. Pegs. Tokens. Dice. Tokens.

What have I done?

Overnight, my collection doubled in size.

What am I gonna do with this stuff? How do I store it? Should I sell some of it off? Should I trade it for other gaming stuff (my girlfriend and I are really getting into Android: Netrunner)? Maybe I can practice painting the ships.

What would you do here? Help me. Please.

Get a hammer and SMASH all of the Phantoms!

You really have two options. Either decide that you want to keep it as you will use the stuff occasionally, in which case grab a shoebox and store it in a cupboard. Or sell off items that you don't need.

Personally I keep a bunch of tokens, bases, pegs etc in a shoebox to replace breakages or lost items from my regular kit. If I got too many models, I'd just leave some of them in storage and only bring them out for big games.

I currently have 47 ships and feel I could add 19 ships not including Wave 5 and Scum!! That would put me way over 60 ships! I base my loadout on 150 pts as I enjoy Escalation and simply playing 150 pt games!

There wouldn't happen to be an extra Tantive IV with spare cards, would there?

Unfortunately, the two epic ships are the only things I don't own. I would love to trade some of this extra stuff for either of them.

Admire the grand empire you have built and be thankful for it.

It kind of depends how many of each ship you have. You say around 60 ships, but how is that distributed? If you have ridiculous numbers of one ship I'd flick some off, but if you have a good distribution it might be just a good collection which you want to keep. I'd keep four of each small ship (6 A-wings, 8 TIEs & Z95s) and three of each large, then see what you have over that.

The most glaring big numbers are the 7 X-Wings, the 6 Interceptors, the 6 B-Wings, the 5 Phantoms, and the 5 Defenders. Unfortunately, I didn't get any extras for A-Wings or Z-95s; I would have loved to get a couple more of those.

In which case, if it were me, I'd offload 2-3 Xwings, 1 'ceptor, 2 Bwings and 1-2 phantoms (I'd keep all 5 defenders because I want 5 copies of Predator, and it would drive me mental if I had cards but not the ship they originally came from; but I'm strange like that- you could drop 2 or even 3).

Too many.

Impossible

The real thing to consider is the growing number of people bailing on this game.

Nick,

I wouldn't be too concerned. This is FFG's biggest selling miniatures game and each release sells better than the previous one (so far). Sales are pretty good, so that would imply that the community is growing, not shrinking.

Besides, for every one selling off their collections, there is at least one adding to (or beginning) their collection.

Fear not, the Force is still strong with this game.

I think the main thing I'm going to do with them is set aside X number of each type of ship and practice painting them. I've never done miniatures painting, so it might be something fun I could add to my game experience. If somebody wants to try to buy the stuff at a later date, I'd be open to selling off anything I didn't want/need any more.

That's precisely why I have so many X-wings. Will I ever field that many at once? Nope. But I need 12 of them to properly do up Red Squadron, circa Battle of Yavin.

I'm going to be a real stinker here and tell you to sell it: use the money to support another system you currently own or pick up a new game.

One of the biggest gaming revelations that I've experienced is no matter how obsessed you are with a game, you'll eventually lose interest at some point or something else will come along.

In no way shape or form am I suggesting that you abandon a system completely in favour of a new one, but during the downtime when you start to feel burnout (EDIT: and I think everyone goes through this, no matter how many internet warriors claim to believe in playing/painting X-wing 24/7 :P) you'll be glad that you have other options.

Besides, stepping away from a game for awhile helps build cravings to play it again.

My vote is to use the money for netrunner :)

100 point games are for beginners :)

Play larger games!

Put a post on the trade thread. I am new to the game and would trade for ships I don't have yet or to get a few more ships. I don't even have the x- wing expansion yet :)

Considering I want enough ships for 2 people to play with me this would be great because now we could even play the same faction "Theoretically" with out having shortages.

Still though I don't mind playing a different faction.

Get more ships...it's never enough...

Well, that all depends on how big this makes your collection. I mean, I don't think there really is a way to have too many ships. Well . . . I suppose if you get to the point where you could make an entire Epic list out of one type of ship and still have minis to spare, that might be too much. :P

I think you should keep them, and try painting a few. If you need to sell them later, you can.

Without sitting down to do the math, I'm pretty sure I could personally field two different 300-point games using just my collection. I'm sitting on 60 ships at this point.

That's not that much. I think I have around that many and I've never bought up anyone's collection; I'm the original owner of it all.
