Talent Tree 'Connected or Jump Around'?

By SemperSarge, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi Guys,

My group and I were wondering when selecting talents in the talent tree;

Are you allowed to select any talent in the tree that is linked to your currently taken talents, skipping other linked talents along the path, or must you select all talents in order?

For example, if you bought talent #1 and you now want to purchase talent #5 can you;

Simply save up XP and purchase talent #5 if they are on some linked path, skipping other talents on that path? -or-

You must purchase talents #2, #3, and #4 in order, on the way before being allowed to purchase talent #5?

Thank in advance! -Jay

You can only purchase a talent if you have already purchased a talent that is directly linked to it. You cannot skip ahead. The only exception is the top row of talents. The top row is available as soon as you have access to that tree.

You can only buy talents which are at the very top OR are directly connected by a line between them.

So you, you would need to buy talent 2, 3, and 4 to purchase talent 5 if they were all in a line.

If a talent can be reached through multiple directions, you can choose which path to take.

For example. Look at the Survivalist tree.

In order to purchase Dedication, there are 2 possible paths. The left hand path, which is Forager-outdoorsman-toughened-toughened-enduring-dedication. and the right hand path, which is outdoorsman-hunter-stalker-expert tracker-grit-dedication.

Any path which follows the lines is a legal one. Some trees even require you to go back up the tree to get certain

Look at the slicer tree. You have to go down the first 4 talents on the far left, but then you can draw literally any path from there as everything from that point onward connects in all directions. However the other three at the top are floating alone.

Also if the talent is not ranked but you already took that talent in another tree, you can count as already having it when you get to that talent and can move on from their.

Makes perfect sense, but I never knew about that until now. Thanks!

I believe the specific wording is that you need to be able to trace an unbroken path from any talent back to the top of the tree.

If you are considering house ruling this away and allowing your players to pick any talent, please reconsider. This topic is one of the oldest for this product line. Disregarding talent trees or allowing players to jump talents along a tree seriously breaks the game and devalues advancements and the entire playing experience. While it is your game, even the rulebook cautions against such dramatic rule changes, since this has major effects throughout the game that you might not anticipate.

Indeed. They'll just pick up a new Dedication rank every 3-4 sessions and be solid 6s across the board in no time.
