Am I Breaking the "Spirit of the Game?"

By barabelsftw, in Zombie Apocalypse

So I was on amazon and saw this line of "Zombie Killer" cutlery. All the reviews say it's real quality for the money. I picked up a utility knife and "tomahawk." They both have uses outside of zombie killing (camping and such.) Am I breaking the spirit of the game by having these? Obviously if I already had them this would be less of a moral dilema but I figured in an RPG where there will be at least 5 players (My groups run big usually) having two starting weapons would be nice to have and there's still a need for more.

This game is causing me to want to learn things that would be useful in this game like how to siphon gas from a car, picking locks, ect. I don't want to be the guy who's character is way better than everyone else's but there are things I'd like to be able to do in this game I know I can't do at this moment.

Not at all, at least in my opinion.

The point of the game is to see how your preparedness might work out. If you carry around knives and other weaponry then good for you. You could always lose it, or have it stolen, or people might view you as a threat if you're blatantly armed.

As for skills, everyone's good at different things generally.

All I have to say is...

Try to avoid getting so financially invested. This is a fictional RPG testing our preparedness in a reality that will never come to pass. Except for the Alien Invasion. That one has more potential of happening than any of the other three books that are due to come out.

So don't go buy a tent, hatchet, rations, etc. unless you actually plan on using them in real life. Find out where you can find them in your local area, so that way you can just gather them in the game. :P

Zombie Apocalypse: the only RPG that let's you gain experience and level up in real life. *

Since playing as yourself, you can immediatly carry over any new skills learned in the real world!

work on that cardio to increase your vitality from a lowly 2 to a perfect 5!

Seriously i can see this as a crossover with bodybuilding and survival guides :D

* FF if you guys wanna use this line for commercial purposes, send me a free copy of the game ;)

Sigh, they slap the word "zombie" on anything these days! There's even "zombie killer" shotgun ammo. It's just regular buckshot. If you want to learn a skill that's good during zombie outbreaks and other apocalypses: Learn First Aid.

It might even be usefull in real life! ;)

That's, just not true. When you start the game that makes a break in the real/fictional timeline. You can become a bodybuilder all you want, but it won't affect your in game character, because your in game character hasn't done what's necessary to become a bodybuilder.

Ah i see what you mean. Yeah i was thinking more of buffing yourself up before you start playing. But you are correct.

"Oh well all commercials lie in some way" :)

I didn't buy it because it said "Zombie Killer" on it. I bought it cause it was cheap and decent quality. While yes first aid is useful I don't have time to learn it right now. I do have an extra $30 though.

The zombie survival Guide: by Max Brooks. You should get a kick out of that one!

Altough you can find the audiobooks on youtube (and give me the 30$ :D )

All I know is if I play this we will be starting at my house. Rifles, tomahawk, machete, other blades, canned food! I don't have a bug out bag, but I could make one in an hour or so. Actually, my Brita container sounds like an awesome addition too.

I only wish I had a firefighter's axe, ala DayZ.

I don't know much about this game, but surfing around I find the idea of "play yourself" fascinating. Hell, any longstanding D&D group tried that at least once... hardest thing is statting yourself accurately. "Wisdom" or "Charisma" are especially dodgy.

As to this post, there are actually really good reasons totally unrelated to zombies, demons or aliens to have some good gear and a Plan. If this game actually makes people think about it a little, well, that's better than any other RPG has done.

So, getcher hatchet, tent, medical supplies and a good rifle!

No, I don't think you're breaking the spirit of the game. On the contrary, I think you might be taking the spirit of the game a little too seriously. I mean, buying weapons in real life just so your character can have them in a game? Sure, they have other uses IRL, but how often do you actually expect to use them for those purposes ? How often to do you actually go camping?

The idea of an RPG where you play as yourself is neat. The idea of changing yourself just to play a game is a little bit scary to me. Especially when the game in question goes to extremes that (one would hope) you never need to go to IRL. All I can say is at least you're smart enough not to buy a gun just for this game. Hopefully, no one will actually go that far.

My worst fear for this game is that somebody might actually buy a seriously dangerous weapon just so they can have it in this game, without taking the time to learn everything they should about how to keep it safely, and as a result someone in the real world ends up getting hurt.

I'm aware that the cutlery you're referring to is not seriously all that dangerous - I'm not talking about you in particular. I worry about someone with a little less impulse control buying something bigger for no good reason. Games are meant to be fun, but we should all be careful that they don't bleed over into real life and cause unjustified trouble. Not only would it be a personal tragedy, but it's the sort of thing that leads to public press about "D&D being devil worship" and so on.

Actually I would say Rise of the Machines is right up there in likeliness to occur once we accomplish creating true full fledged AI.

I was thinking of setting the rise of the machines in a near future society with androids, rather than our world in wich skynet has the nukes, while drones and smartphones are trying to kill us.

You know what's gonna start the robot uprising? The porn industry!

Lemme explain:

1: Androids are created. They have Asimovs 3 laws. (lets asume these work, ok?)

2. "Pleasure models" are created.

3. Sado-masochist customers demand a Dominatrix droid.

4. Dominatrix droids cannot work effectivly due to 3 laws of robotics (cannot harm a human)

5. Droids now being made with "3 laws version 2.0"

6. Dominatrix droids do what they do a little to well. Deaths ensue.

7. Anti robot riots start.

8. Full scale robot uprsing.
