Jake is alot of fun to fly

By Clayjar, in X-Wing Battle Reports

So I play with my brothers 2 vs 2 on Vassal.

I had Jake with VI and Opportunist, Han Solo with Gunner and Determination and INtel officer and one Green A-wing with PTL. My teammate had Wes with VI, Biggs, Tarn and Gemmer.

We went against Kath with marksmanship and howlrunner miniswarm, Col Vessery + HLC, Soontir and Saber pilot

I was flying Jake very fast and unpredictable doing alot of 1 turns. Problem is that Jake couldn't kill much. He was constantly arc doging and had his opponents within 1 range. Twice he had Soontir within one range and out of his arc and only wounded him twice despite his opportunist. Jake also wounded Saber with 2 hits. But he had some success and flew right behind Vessery and scored 3 hits on him. Han did most of the killing with Biggs doing a kill.

But Jake ended the game when he was range 3 from Kath (with 2 hull) but out of her arc. He rolled two eyeballs which he used his focus. ANd Kath used her marksmanship as an action so she couldn't do anything with a eyeball and blank defense roll.

Jake, Han Solo and Tarn were left on the board.

I love Jake. He's rapidly becoming my favorite A-Wing, neck and neck with Gemmer.

Try Jake + PTL + Outmaneuver. Now you can boost, barrel roll, and focus to get a range 1 out of arc shot, then the lose an agility die. If that's against Fat Han, 3P0 won't help him. :) Against Soontir, you're rolling 3v2. It can really help. :)

I thought about PTL, but didn't want to be stressed and forced to do a green straight maneuver. I kept Jake constantly doing turns and barrel rolling or boosting where both interceptors (one being Soontir) could never put Jake within their firing arcs.

I did have 3 green dice vs 2 defense dice from Soontir but he always had that focus token which always helped him receive only 1 or no hits from Jake. A wounded Soontir had to be despatched by my Han.

Awing has green hard 2

I just happened to try out Push The Limit and Outmaneuver on him the other day and it really worked well. It felt like the rebel version of Soontir Fel. You just have to remember to barrel roll (by focusing) first, then boost.

You can actually boost/barrel roll in either order. Either Focus > Barrel Roll > PTL > Boost or Boost > PTL > Focus > Barrel Roll. They clarified it in the newest FAQ.

Dang thats tricky! I can understand focus > barrel roll then using ptl from the barrel roll to boost. I'm having trouble figuring out boost > focus > barrel roll. The barrel roll option is triggered by executing a focus action. So if I boost then use ptl to focus don't I recieve a stress token first which prevents me from doing my free barrel roll action?

It was clarified in the recent FAQ. Basically, here's how it works.

You boost.

You activate Push the Limit.

You take a free Focus Action from Push the Limit

Jake's ability is triggered

You now have two pending events. Jake's free action and the stress from Push The Limit. They have the same timing. This means you can choose to do them in either order.

This is because you don't have to complete one card before moving onto the next if that card does two things. If the first thing a card does triggers something, another effect can jump in and interrupt it.

That's awesome! Thanks for clearing that up!

I like him with just Outmaneuver, Frees up a few extra points to dump elsewhere, and let's me grant him a late action if needed (a-la Airen).
