Price!

By Nestyr, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm really interested in this, but I'm being put off by the price!

FFG list the price as being $100USD. I'm located in Australia. The game is listed on Military Simulations as costing $160AUD, RRP, but will be for sale at their price of $140AUD.

I was planning on getting two core sets, but not at that price!

Guess I'll stick with X-Wing...

Yes, gaming can be an expensive hobby - particularly in Australia !

I believe you may have misread the price shown on the Milsims site. I had already pre-ordered one copy from Milsims at $120 and their website still shows that same price - not the $140 you mentioned. http://www.milsims.com.au/node/132316

You are correct however; the crossed through (regular?) price is showing as $160.

For two core sets you may find an on-line option through the North American market. It may require signing up to various retailers and getting some quotes for shipping through the 'checkout' process. I have looked at these options in the past although the savings may not be that much in contrast to an outlay (2 cores) of such magnitude (size and weight).

I would agree that for example a $66.97USD special pre-order price (regular $99.95) from Miniature Market, even taking into account the exchange rate (currently around $0.85AUD = $1.00USD) and our GST of 10% does makes the set look overly priced here.

Although many US items are less expensive in contrast to Australia, the Americans also have a lower minimum average wage. We also have the benefit of living in arguably the best country in the world at present. ^_^

I was initially also put off by the price but the more I see of the Armada system, the more I am confident it will be a great fit for what I have in mind.

Happy gaming!

I'm looking at $160-175 by the time it get's to New Zealand. Which is instantly ruling out more than one core set. But it also depends what you actually get in the core set to start with, and whether you would actually need a second one. We all know X-Wing was a good investment to buy a second core set, but apart from the ships, what else is in the core that would warrant a second one?

It also depends on the price of the individual ships as well. If they are going to be cost prohibitive to collect, they just might shoot this game down before it gets started.

There's really no reason to get 2 core sets for Armada, you don't have nearly the kind of value you do in 2 X-Wing Cores, because the extra ships aren't nearly as useful. The CR-90 is the only one you really want 3 or more of.

If they'll make the Nebulon available to both sides, I'll grab a half dozen of them. However, that's another discussion topic.

I'm distressed at the price too, but I will withhold judgement until I've seen the game in person.

Nestyr,

Milsims currently have a sale (until November 9th)...you can now pre-order for $112 if that is any help!

The sticker is not going to be that much of a deterrent. The only one who could veto the expense just spent WAY too much on a hair cut. (heheheh!)

However, many of the guys in my gaming community are going to be deterred by the price, which is going to probably leave me without people to play against. :(

That is IMO one of the advantages of Armada as it seems to be shaping up to be.

It will have an even lower model count then X-Wing, so while you have more expensive models, you need way less of them.

A good imperial list may very well consist of nothing more than 2 VSD's and some fighters. Now consider that Wave 2 may be a ISD... It's unlikely you will have room for more than 1 of those in a list. I'm guessing they'll be in the 125+ range, then figure fighters and a commander... That means even if the ISD costs $60, you could very well buy 1 ISD and be done with wave 2.

So I think Armada will be even easier to maintain a decent collection that you can share with other people.

That's certainly my hope as well. Still, it may be a matter of threshold.

Someone at last week's game asked the assembled crowd playing X-Wing if they'll be getting into it, and the grumbling suggested not.

With all the FFG community gender nonsense in mind, and given my previous remark here about minimum wage etc., perhaps FFG could offer their own citizens a less expensive 'price' (especially to female gamers...) as this may reduce grumbling.

http://www.politifact.com/oregon/statements/2014/feb/19/brad-avakian/do-oregon-women-earn-79-cents-every-dollar-men-ear/

Based on my observed and therefore factual observations, women/girls are less likely to enjoy playing with toys and dice than men/boys. If I gave my wife a copy of Armada as a gift she would consider that an insult to her intelligence (sadly)!

Aw, what a cute little troll we have here.

My plan was to buy the core set myself, plus a couple of expansion sets that I like... and have my friends (with less funding) buy just the expansion sets, so we have a good batch of ships to use... we tend to each just control one ship in games like these as we have a rather large gaming group... min of 6 players, but 8 to 10 is common.

I figure if between us we get 3 Victories, or 2 Victories and a Gladiator, and a bunch of rebel ships including a couple of Nebulons and an Assault Frigate we should be doing great.

Oh... and one each of the fighter packs ;-)

Seeing decimators sell like hotcakes despite their higher price tag has made me far less nervous the risk of armada prices driving people away.

Biggest barrier still seems to be people already playing x-wing and seeing no reason to star armada as well.

We can only speculate and ask around to have an idea of what will happen after the release date. There are a fair number of people in my X-Wing community who have a wait-and-see attitude towards this. It'll take entrepreneurs to buy the game and show it to them to possibly get them into it. I might be one of those entrepreneurs if it seems like my community is going to want to make the time for it.

It may also be like Cannis0013 is saying. This may be a hub-and-spoke game, where one person buys the core, and others play with their expansions only when he's around.

I don't know how many other gaming groups work like ours. I pretty much run all the games we play and host them at my house. I own the gaming mats and probably some 90% of the miniatures we use. X-Wing and Star Trek Attack Wing were the first games where we started buying like that... one core set with my friends buying their own ships.

Although now that I think about it... back in the day when I ran DnD Games, I was the only one with the Dungeon Master Guide. .

Anyway... I seem to have forgotten to post my point... LOL... having one person invest in the core set and having other players in a group agree to buy other ships as needed is an option. As long as you have a solid gaming group. And believe me if the game is a hit with us, it won't be long before other people in my group start getting the core set too... Birthdays and other holidays always seem to beef up the gaming material we have access to. :)

In my community, we meet up at the local gaming stores. I frequent about three of them, one at considerable distance. People show up ad hoc and play games with the stuff they brought. It's rarely the case that someone plays with someone else's stuff. I did invite an interested bystander to play a game with me, but he was waiting for someone else to show up for a different game.

Yeah, it's too bad that it doesn't look like they'll get Armada to market before Christmas. It's not even on the boat yet, and it's saying expected Q1/2015. Didn't it say Q4/2014 not so long ago?

That is unfortunate, I know I would have gotten quite a plethora of Armada stuff for Christmas if it were available... Now I am hoping it comes out late enough in the quarter that my finances have recovered from Christmas, so I can afford to buy it when it is finally released!

No it has always been Q1/2015 for armada.

Like Keroko said, it's always been Q1/2015, although with Wave 6 of X-Wing getting pushed back, I wonder if Armada gets pushed back to Q2. I (or rather my wallet) wouldn't entirely mind, although I'm still very much looking forward to picking it up.

Okay, I guess I'm just demented.

(It's been known to happen.)

I'm curious what the different profit margins are between Armada and X-Wing. Is X-Wing a gateway drug to a more profitable higher-end game (Armada). The components - such as the range ruler and the dials - seem to be higher quality than what we know in X-Wing. That's probably why the core set is as expensive as it is, in addition to the larger miniatures.

Okay, I guess I'm just demented.

Not that I am trying to refute that ... :D

But at Gencon Fantasy Flight did say there were "hopes" that Imperial Assault and Armada would both be released by end of Q4 2014, but even then, Imperial Assault was clearly closer to hitting that target date.

Alas, judging from the previews and highlights, it looks like we will get Armada sometime mid to late Q1 2015.

Which begs the question, does your girlfriend want a matching pair of Victory Star Destroyer and Gladiator for Valentines?

My wife just might.
