Supply shortages

By PhantomFO, in X-Wing

Was looking online at the local plastic crack dealers, and hadn't realized just how bad this was. I knew the Falcon and Firespray were out of stock in the post-Phantom meta, but this is nuts. A scan of Miniatures Market shows them as out of stock on everything but the HWK, the two Aces, the Lambda, the Core set, Wave 4 and the Tantive. If you want to get the Wave 1-3 Rebel or Imperial small ships through Amazon, it'll run you up to $30.

How did the supply lines get this bad?

Exactly. Q3 restock hasn't hapoened for most things. Seems the local brick and mortar stores got their stuff. And they re supplied the core set. But everywhere else and everything else nope.

They need a better production manager.

Losing so much profit right now.

Been losing profits for 4 months now

I should have got that falcon when I saw it.. lol

And it had a couple firesprays as well

They may just not have projected the growth to be as high as it has been - it's a fine line in operations management between having enough inventory and too much money tied up sitting on shelves and not moving.

Very true

Supply shortages seem to be a worldwide problem, though possibly more pronounced outside of the US. It would certainly make sense for FFG to supply their biggest market first.

Hey Phantom,

giving an opinion from a Brit viewpoint. I started into this game a couple of months ago and got an initial impression that nothing was going to be available until the reprint.

So, 5 X wings (one boxed set), 4 Tie fighters, 2 defenders, 1 phantom, 1 advanced, 5 interceptor (2 imp aces boxes) 2 bomber, 3 B wing, 2 A wing (one reb aces) 2 Y wing, 1 Slave 1, Gr 75, 2 Z95, 2 E wing and 1 Hwk later......

I found that you need to do a bit of searching. Stay away from Amazon, ebay and hit the web sites of the FLGS or even LGS :-) I found a lot of them still had stock. It was just a question of searching. I know the UK stores are now getting restocks of certain stuff so I would bet the US stores are as well so betting things will improve from now.

The only thing I couldn't lay my hands on is a Falcon, but i do know they were available in the USA. No shuttle on the list yet as I just haven't picked one up, they are available.

Yeah I have been getting caught up solely on my STAR TREK stuff because of this. I want ten TIE Fighters and three Firesprays... but I have to be flexible in what I buy sometimes.

I just bought some Engine Upgrade cards today at Barnes & Noble. The cards were a little pricey at $10 a pop but they threw in a Millennium Falcon model for free, so at least I've got that going for me.

I know the local Barnes& Nobel stores in the Orlando FL area had everything except th cr-90. And the numerous local game stores had most everything. Also Barnes & Nobel in Florence sc has a good stock of most everything except the big ships.

Did you just say you got a Falcon for $10 at Barnes and Noble? I didn't think you could get into the store for less than $20. At that price I hope you bought more than 1 - you could sell them at MSRP and make a little profit

No, the pair of Engine Upgrade cards that I bought worked out to be $10 each. They came two in a pack with a bunch of stuff I probably won't use (like the Millennium Falcon model). I'm probably going to see if anyone local to me would be interested in buying or trading for a Falcon that is missing it's Engine Upgrades (and maybe DTF).

Availability is the only downside to this game. Until I started playing X-Wing, games workshop supplied my plastic addiction, and although I now believe Gw is a terrible business I never once had to wait for stock to come in. Always available and always loads of it regardless of demand. I've known ppl get into X-wing buy a few ships, try to buy more over a period of a few months and completely give up on the game in the end.

Maybe it's all a ploy like dangling a carrot in front of a horse??

nope, if suppose it were you right now, looking at Xwing, wanting to get into the game, only to be told that so and so is out of stock, you have to wait awhile. So you wait. 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 month, and still no stock.

What would happen is you would simply stop waiting and go on to other stuff, be it another game, another hobby entirely, or whatever. And when the stock finally arrives, nope you would not be getting back into Xwing after you have left.

The issue may not be the suppliers or FFG. The dock workers in San Diego have been on strike and now are only allowing the pickup of containers from the port at night. This makes the throughput less than 1/2 of what it should be due to the limitation of daytime workers from the trucking companies to supply drivers, trucks and trailers that can take containers within that time limit. I know my place of employment has containers of product sitting on the dock for 3 weeks now and it is literally buried behind other containers. I'm not sure how big of a company FFG's is, but I know we have literally millions of dollars worth of stock that we do not have access to, to ship. Based on the size of the typical ship size and the size of a 40ft container, then entire Scum launch could be in just a couple of containers.

My point is, cut them some slack on the availability. It may be totally out of their control. The alternative is to produce the same products in the US and drive the cost up to twice what you pay now.

The other issue I believe is the painting, rather than run the risk of releasing some products not up to snuff cough*Finecast*cough they reject the substandard products to maintain a higher overall quality and I believe they mentioned at GenCon that the painting process has the highest QA rejection rate

Look I jumped into this game when Y's were being sold on ebay for 200 bucks!!! Or at least trying to be sold at that price. Just keep looking. Ebay, local game stores. Eventually you will find what you want and then over compensate and buy like 12 Y's like some folks I know. OK like One person I know.lol

Realistically that's where the supply issues have trouble, it isn't on the supply as much as unreasonable demand, when people buy 12 ships and never use more than 2-3 you have 9 "wasted" packs (assuming there is not any cards being used from those extra packs)

Now I understand the cheap ships that you can fit a lot of into a list, epic play, some ships like the Defender that have awesome cards (predator) unobtainable elsewhere. I don't begrudge people the ability to spend their money how they wish to, that's how a capitalistic economy should work. In theory though it would be nice if people only bought what they needed for regular games and then waited on "filling out the squadron" until reprints to allow other players the chance to buy the new stuff.

Side Note for people complaining about lack of build diversity this is one cause, if people can buy more ships they can run different builds

It's all about Supply and Demand ;)

hmmm... Germany is the country u want to look at we have plently of falcons and other wave 2-3 ships here ;p.... pretty much every wave is available ;P...

I buy Y's also because they are my favorite ship looks wise.also some of them (4) were purchased by my wife when she went to a local book store and knew I was looking for them. So like I am really going to say no dear take them back I have too many.lol..she has also pretty much purchased me at least one of every one of the small base fighters. She like to read and I benifit. But yeah I do admit to being a bit of a horder. Do the same thing with.22 ammo now.

I think it's partially Esdevium not ordering enough stock and part FFG not printing enough stock.

Yeah, I don't understand that either. I try to buy the max that I can get into a 100 point list but that's it. The only ones I have gone over on are the X-wing by one because I got another starter and the B-wing by one (due to Rebel Aces).

EVERYONE does that with .22 ammo. I tell you, we had to go out of state to find any ammo. It was sold out in the entire Northern California region. Quite literally the people knew when the ammo would be put on the shelves and there would be a mob of 50 people that morning scrambling to buy as much as they could.

Did your country's gaming stores overrun Belgium again to get the extra minis they needed . . .
