Building Asteroids

By Trebor Minntt, in X-Wing

I recently built myself a dozen asteroids to use as scenery and I find having 3D asteroids on the board really helps the aesthetic of the game. I spent a while looking for guides and during that search discovered that pretty much every guide assumes that the reader lives in the US and so uses and named US materials and stores. This wasn't a whole lot of use to me, what with being located in England and so I went about writing my own and figured that it might be useful to the lovely people who populate this forum-

Asteroid Building Guide

Im a fairly experienced modeler and painter... i found making decent asteroids a right pain so just put lava rocks on clear sticks and then based them on spare asteroid templates from my second core set.

Lot less hassle.

Having made foam asteroids in the past, I find it is much easier to use barbecue stones.

I considered using lava rocks but I enjoy the process of building things and I found the whole process fairly simple and painless (aside from the sound that the foam makes when cutting and tearing it.....)

Nicely done, I've been thinking on this myself for a long time, even got some rocks to do some. Haven't due to various issues. I like your approach to this, gave me some inspiration, I may be working on some this weekend ..

Thanks for sharing.

You are very welcome.

Very nice asteroids. I made mine out of sculpey, and got the stands from CorSec. You can see them here

I love playing with 3d asteroids.

I remember those, such an awesome job on them. And looking at them again I realized the sculpt and color scheme have a .. ominous look to them, even with the cute little space slug.. lol

I return your compliment good sir, your asteroids are also stunning but likely a little beyond my sculpting ability.

My next task is to try and get hold of some broken, damaged or older components to make some debris asteroids but finding them for a fair price is proving difficult at the moment.

I did a couple foam board asteroids in similar fashion to yours here and I have to say... why I didn't think of this before.. such a great idea.. I'll post some pictures when they are closer to being done, they are just grey primer at the moment...

I'm feeling inspired.. and dug out an old badger air brush from the late 70s, or early 80s.. lol. Will see whatni can do with it this weekend and a coup, e of lambdas I need to paint.. navy grey I think...

Thanks! Yeah, I'm going to want to make some debris fields aswell once I get wave 5. But I have no idea of the best way to do it. I'll probably wait a while and see what other people do. :-)

Cut some Styrofoam or get some lava rocks works in any country.

I got a set from eBay for pretty cheap a while back and they've been a fantastic addition to our game. Now that I know they're made of lava rocks (thanks to the guy who mentioned them earlier in this thread) I'm looking at picking some of those up and making my own.

Definitely a great addition to any game
