"Broken" cards in Conquest.... are there any in your opinion?

By Papa Midnight, in Warhammer 40,000: Conquest

Simply put, are there any cards that you perceive to be "broken" in some way?

For example, are there cards that seem under -costed? Are there any cards that seem to have abilities that are too powerful? etc.

My question is mainly academic and not meant to elicit an emotional response from anyone... I ain't aiming at drawing punches from you guys. :P

The majority of Chaos units, haha. But I would single out Possessed, five cost 9 att and 4 hp.

Superiority. Whenever it is used, you can have it replace both its cost and the card, while simultaneously denying your opponent the same. It has zero opportunity cost, and a large payoff.

While it's not a broken card, I would say there's a slight balance issue with only 3 factions having a ' board wipe' effect. Their placement on the agenda wheel does mean that every faction has access to at least one of them. However, that forces an allied faction choice on all but the Tau.

I am yet to see a card/combo that tilts the game so far as to upset it's balance. I have some concerns about the "board wipes" if more stuff were to come out forcing an opponent into their wheelhouse. Hopefully, their built-in balances will suffice.

It's not broken at this time, but the wording on Honored Librarian worries me for future releases. By itself, Honored Librarian has no problem, but if another unit in the future has a similar effect, the two units together could make a somewhat broken combo. I feel that looking toward the future, it may have been better to make the Librarian's effect a keyword such as "guarded".

Guarded -- Enemy units cannot attack this unit while you control a unit without Guarded.

As it stands now, if you control an Honored Librarian and a hypothetical Unit X with a similar ability, you would have an interaction like this:

Honored Librarian: Enemy units cannot attack this unit while you control a unit not named "Honored Librarian" at this planet.

Unit X: Enemy units cannot attack this unit while you control a unit not named "Unit X" at this planet.

The two units would make each other un-attackable. If they both had my Guarded keyword instead, there would be no problem.

Oh well, no sense worrying about things that haven't happened yet.

Nematode, interesting example.

I certainly hope that we don't get a combo such as the one you stated.

I haven't really come across any yet, though Possessed is a wicked bastard for as cheap as he is.

Flamers+Zara or Storm+Zara would potentially sort out that conundrum, not sure about others save for SM with Exterminatus if they are on a non-first planet.

The dark eldar already have some cards that could stop honoured librarian+ unit X combo:

Twisted laboratory (blank textbox). And if it's only those two units; archons terror, pain from power (get's rid of one of the two units)

I haven't found anything broken yeat either. But possessed are pretty sweet!

I wonder what combo potential we'll see when the necrons come out.

I think the odds of needing to worry about Honored Librarian's ability being duplicated are pretty low, given how obvious the problem with stacking multiple versions of it are. It's possible we might see more cards like that, but I doubt they'd be ones that could be used alongside an Honored Librarian--probably Loyal or Signature cards of other factions. That's why those restrictions exist.

Even if the Honoured Librarian's ability is duplicated, it'll be far enough in the future for players to have tools to handle it. Either by forcing sacrifice, AOE damage or just some sort of board clearance.

I tend to agree that the various stages of loyalty - warlord, loyal, faction - tend to keep the abusive combinations at a minimum, especially with the varying styles of play/deck...

If i had to pick one it would be either bloodletters because they can really crush the MSU decks that are en vogue, or Commander Shadowsun: recursion and free attachment can really become a pain ><, and perhaps helldrake+free depoly from that one planets battle ability.

overall i think everything has its place, and there arnt any cards where im like "well ****, there is no answer to that"

Nothing broken in my neck of the woods - game seems balanced so far!

I don't think there are any truely broken cards/combos in the core set. But I think indomitable and Fury of Sicarus maybe under costed. At this point I have a hard time seeing why every space marine deck would not run 3x Indomitable.

You could make an argument that Kymera Den and Shrine of Warflame are close. As both those cards have a huge impact on the game when they are played. Probably more so than any other signature squad card.

Pain from power, they get to choose and it can be on any planet.

I know, but early in the game if he played his combo right away (no other units) it might still work. Mostly included it for completism. Best option would be to blank the text box.

Only thing I have found broken in this game is the lack of available product to buy. It's pretty much killing the game in my area since we can't get anymore and it's still months out for a reprint. Why did they not print as much as ususal knowing people would have to buy 3 sets for competitive level??

Off topic, but Baenre is right... It's really hard to take advantage of the one-shot momentum that comes with release in the hopes to build a strong community when so many people can't get their hands on a single damned copy of the game. This has gone on for weeks, if not months...

There's a restock on the way. Netrunner sold out same way and did multiple times afterwards.

Still no excuse IMO. I'm no supply chain manager but this is a fundamental process that producers making anything have to make sure works out. When they fail at estimating demand, it's on them. I cannot imagine a scenario where repetitively understocking releases can be profit maximizing. Thus I assume it's yet another mis-calc.

I think you're under-weighing the value of the "OMG SOLD OUT" reputation that comes with these sorts of things. For every person who'll just pick up another game when they can't buy the one they want right now there are a few more who'll feverishly check online stores daily to try and secure a copy. Lets face it, the majority of video game console hardware releases in history ends up with ludicrously constrained supply for the first period, and it never hurts sales long term.

There's a lot to be said for "this game's so great, you can't even lay your hands on it yet".

That said, there are 6 copies down my local store not going anywhere by the looks of things!

Perhaps you make a good point. I would really hope that this is not an "intentional" strategy though. As someone who's trying to rally a community via the direct encouragement of players in our LCG group to buy in, as well as through trying to organize some core set intro tourneys, it's super frustrating that people are still just playing Netrunner because they can't find a copy of the game.

I would argue that the vast majority of players who would buy in if they could are not the hardcore type that get frantic when they cant find it. Instead they are non-vocal majority that just play something else while their initial interest in the release slowly wanes. But no-one knows which side dominates for sure. Again though, very frustrating when trying to capitalize on release to start a community.

Rzarectz tried to get me to play with him by absolutely destroying me. If only I had my own cards...

not to belittle your situation but you should have seen the reaction to the marvel dice master shortages!

game came out before summer, and wizkidz is only now catching up!
