Using specialist cards in deployment deck.

By biomage, in Battlelore

Since specialist cards have the same back as deployment cards, has anyone developed a way to use them concurrently? I'd like the random aspect.

My ideais to select 6 specialist cards to add to the deck of 14 deployment cards. Draw and place them accordingly.

I am not quite sure about your idea behind. Deployment cards and specialists are used in separate phases of the game. As soon as you shuffle them together and deal to the players, you cannot be sure, if both receive enough deployment cards to field an army.

What if one player gets just deployment cards and the other one specialists and only two deployment cards?

True, you get randomness, but for the sacrifice of game balance. If you are looking for variance, try one of Richard Borgs variants, found here: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?goto=123231#msg_123231

Dark.

The way I see that this could be done, without altering the current CTA rules too much, is to choose the two decks as normal (or one if playing with the abbreviated rules - can't remember the name of those, "Impromptu" I think) then shuffle in X number of Specialist cards. From that combined deck draw (4 + X) cards. In this manner the player will be guaranteed to have the minimum number of Deployment cards needed to proceed, but also have extra cards that may be either Specialist cards and/or additional deployment cards. At this point here's where some more choices can be made about how to proceed.

My suggestion would be to limit the number of Specialist cards that may be used to 2, and if more than 2 are drawn that just means that the player has more to choose from, if only one or none are selected, that is just the way this particular cookie crumbled. Similarly, with the Deployment cards at least four will be drawn, if more are drawn then there will be more to choose from. I think this will fit in well with the way balance is built into the BattleLore system at large - Penalized in one area/benefit in another, etc.
