Predator or Lone Wolf?

By Sonikgav, in X-Wing

Im running a list with Echo, and a Tactician Shuttle, with just enough points for Brath and 3 points left over.

My choice is now which EPT to put on Brath.

Lone Wolf - Applies to defence as well as offence, supports with Braths role of being able to operate as a flanker.

Predator - No defence assistance but odd chance of 2 Rerolls. Isnt going to be taken away with one round of careless flying leaving you too close to an ally. Also means i dont have to be as careful with my other ships for the same reason.

So, opinions?

Is echo kitted out? If she doesn't have VI I would go for lone wolf and VI on echo

Otherwise I'd go for predator as it is more reliable than lone wolf e.g if you roll an focus icon you won't be able to reroll it with lone wolf

Echo has Vi and ACD. Cant have Lone Wolf and Vi together.

Full list as it stands is...

Echo - Vi, ACD

OGP - Tactician x2

Brath - Predator

100pts

...as i said ive got those 3 points invested in Predator atm but im open to options.

I don't think one stands or over the other as the obvious choice.

Lone Wolf is cheaper and works on defense but only applies to blanks. Plus there is the range to friendly ships restriction.

Predator is offensive only but doesn't impede your flying.

I think the question is how often does Rex make it to end game? If you find him cleaning up then probably Lone Wolf. Otherwise Predator.

I am currently experimenting with Lone Wolf on Rexler and absolutely love it! The ability to re-roll a blank green die on a ship that absolutely always wants to have a focus ready anyways is amazing! It not only boosts the survivebility of the Tie Defender but increases your confidence while flying it, allowing you to make better decisions in game. On the flip side, having to stay distance 2 away from the nearest friendly ship is challenging, but I think still worth it.

You can also use the saved point from predator to get a tactical jammer on the shuttle.

I'm really looking forward to lone wolf because now I will be able to fit rexler with hlc and lone wolf into a squad with howlrunner and 3 academy ties. clocks in right at 100 points

That sounds really nice!

I think it is also possible to do:

  • Rexler Brath, hlc, lone wolf; x3 Alpha Interceptors
  • Rexler Brath, hlc, lone wolf; Back Stabber, Alpha Interceptor, Avenger Interceptor

I am hoping to test all 3 lists in the coming few weeks (before they reveal what the two new cannons do and throw all of the list building for a spin).

I'd argue Predator is a stronger buy for Brath in general, because you're going to want to save a focus for his ability more often than not, so rerolling an attack eyeball or blank is stronger than just a blank. Rerolling defensively is nice, but since his focus is always spoken for (damage or his ability), Brath won't get too much out of the defensive aspect of Lone Wolf.

In a similar ship, in a similar situation, I'd argue Lone Wolf is a stronger buy if you're pretty positive your ships will be spread out, and Echo can usually accommodate that! A three-agi ship with rerolls becomes a real pain to put down, so that's worth a fair bit.

You know, I think that's an error some people make when playing with Brath: You should not save your focus for his ability. If you roll an eyeball, use your focus to change it into a hit unless : A- A crit is the only thing that might save your life (the additional hit won't kill your opponent but a blinded pilot will prevent him from shooting back), in that case you are only chasing or B- You save it for defense. His ability should be treated as a bonus that can occasionally trigger, not something you should go out of your way to use often.

For my part, I prefer Lonewolf. The defensive reroll is priceless because Defenders rely on those green dice to survive. But, you have to remember that you need to keep in range 3+ of your allies for lonewolf to trigger, so there might be a turn or 2 where you won't be able to use lonewolf at all. In that sense, Predator is more reliable.

Red Castle:

You make a valid point! I suppose Brath isn't someone you can make too many broad statements about, because you're right, he really should be focussing his red and green dice as needed; his ability is a delicious gravy. But I'd argue that, against low agility targets, I might be more inclined to try and use his ability more often, whereas high agility targets might warrant more direct damage when the rolls support it. With a Defender, he hopefully isn't getting shot too often after the initial approach, but I suppose that comes down to flying style more than anything. Lone Wolf does indeed work well in most situations, so long as you trigger it, but I prefer more direct damage, and Predator offers more opportunities for that, which I think is why it's that one point more.

I think i may experiment with Lone Wolf first.

I think the choice really comes in how i fly them. I was expecting to have Echo out on his own while Brath and the Bus fly formation. With Lone Wolf ill just stick Brath out on a Flank and have the Bus shadow Echo around weakening his targets with the stress.
