First post – so here goes.
The First Wellington X-wing Regionals were held on 18th October 2014. There were 23 players with a range of lists. Though it was not my first tournament, I was pumped and a little apprehensive. My expectations coming into this were not high but I was hoping to make it into top 16 and maybe get some evade tokens.
After toying around with some lists I had settled on a 100 point list:
Han Solo + Millenium Falcon, Veteran Instincts, C3PO, and Gunner
Corran Horn + Push the limit, Advanced Sensors and R7T1
Round 1: or “Are there only hits on these dice?”
Han and Corran cruise around the edge of the system, looking for Imperial scouts. They encounter Ten Numb on patrol with 2 B-wings and a Z-95 (I think). With tensions running high the Rebellion ships decide to blow off some steam fighting a training scenario. Early in the piece, Han gets surrounded by the B’s and should have died. (The dice ran hot on both sides, nothing but hits during the first exchange, I think 15 hits on 15 dice). Thanks to tremendous luck, Han survives, incapacitating Ten Numb in the process. Corran “double taps” a B-wing in a later round.
After an hour the Rebel ships limp back to their assigned patrol sectors to fix holes and regenerate shields.
1-0 (OK, first round nerves done.)
Round 2: or “Friendly fire is not friendly”
Han and Corran, a little more cautious this time, encounter Chewie, Biggs and Gemmer. In the first exchange Corran “double taps” poor Biggs. Gemmer manages to get into range and Han gets a mild proton rocket fireworks display with minimal damage. After an hour dancing around each other Han and Corran have no shields and too many holes in the hull but manage to knock out Chewie and the Awing pilot.
2-0 (Cool doing better than I thought I would.)
Round 3: or “There can be only 1 Han.”
Feeling overconfident Han and Corran are almost crushed by “Imposter” Han (with Luke on board and an engine upgrade), 2 Talas and a Bandit. Falling into the Imposter’s well-constructed trap, Han gets pounded by all the Zs and Imposter Han. Down to 4 hull and Imposter Han almost undamaged, things did not look good for our heroes. Then Han’s luck kicked in. Some lucky fire on Bandit pilot that got too close to the Falcon’s guns and the Bandit was disabled. More lucky fire mostly from Corran ripped the shields and some hull off Imposter Han. Imposter Han runs and Corran chases it to the other side of the board. The Z95’s keep firing on Han but only manage to make two small holes. Han at this point is chasing after Imposter Han. Corran meanwhile is having trouble lining up a shot and gets all his shields and hole knocked into the side of his ship. With seconds left on the clock Han and Corran catch up to the Imposter Han and manage fish him off.
3-0 (I made the elimination rounds!)
Elimination round 1: or “Luck cannot make up for bad piloting.”
Needing more training, Han and Corran line a up a match against a Roark Garnet, a Blue, a Dagger and 2 Talas.
(Having avoided the asteroids the for most of the tournament, I decided to make up for it now.) The initial exchange was fine and Han and Corran focussed all fire on Roark almost but not quite killing him. Then Han parked on an asteroid the“death rock” while Corran tried to draw some of the fire away. Han sustains heavy damage and with expert flying a B blocks Han’s escape and keeps him parked on the “death rock”. Feeling sorry for Han, the other B finishes him off . Poor Corran is mopped up in short order.
(Knocked out, but feeling fine about it. )
I came 4th after the Imperial scout force of Echo, Soontir Fel and Boost Shuttle take out Roark and company.
Overall great fun, and very cool seeing so many new and old faces. I think I got more than my fair share of luck and finished well above my goal. I came away with dice, tokens, promo cards and an E-wing .
Onwards to the Nationals!
