Just noticed on the xwing companion app that there was a named pilot for the scyk revealed, basically a defensive howlrunner. I know we don't know how much generic pilots will cost but if you can get 3 of those things in a squad with Serissu and all with HLC's that could be brutal. Basically beefed up ties that can wail on ships at range 3. Anyone feelin' it?
Scyk Swarm?!
Working under an assumption that the Cartel Scyks are 13 points, you could make a great 5 Scyk list:
Serissu - 20
Cartel Scyk w Title and HLC - 22 (x2)
Cartel Scyk w Title and Ion Cannon - 18 (x2)
100 points
The cheapest generic will likely be around 13-14p, with HLC that would be 22-23 each, so you would have 4 ships with 3hp which you want to fly in formation. Either you pile up with defensive upgrades on Serissu, or give her an HLC as well. In the latter case it would just take a single strong flanker to snipe Serissu and remove that small defensive edge.
Yeah thats real cool. I am totally digging the M3-A. Part of me is thinking Ion Cannons. With only 2 attack dice, its unlikely to do more than one damage unless the opponent has 1 defense dice anyhow, is usable at range 1-3 and it appears to be one of the few options where you can have ions AND outnumber your opponents.
You can do:
Cartel Pilot & Heavy Scyk & Ion Cannon X4
Serissu
and have 8 pts left for Mods, Cannon/Missile/Torp and/or Skills on Serissu. I would go heavy defensive on her since she will be the target.
Another option would be, if they cost 13, to take 4 generics with Autoblaster and Serissu, or 5 with Autoblaster. Killer at Range 1.
I am also going to have to talk about the downsides:
2 Agility.
1 Shield, 2 Hull.
Its made of paper, the type of paper that even rock can get through. Range one, it looks like any 3 FP ship has a good chance of one shotting them.

I'm not sure i can justify putting HLCs on the syck due to it's hull weakness. Autoblasters sure.
It'd be a laugh to do HLC toteing scyk but they won't last very long, as part of a mixed unit one hanging back and sniping will do well but as a mono list nah it would not work.
What was that? A Skynet hunter killer? a GIJoe vehicle?

So awesome!
I dig Serissu, but I think she'd be better leading a naked swarm than a beefed up one. Her ability gets greater value the more ships she has to give the re-roll to.
The cheapest M3-A has pilot skill of 2, so comparing them to TIEs, it looks like it's going to be 13 or 14 per ship. This means she'll likely fit as 1 ship of a 6 ship M3-A swarm, with 10 extra points for upgrades like stealth uprade, swarm tactics, and maybe one scyk with ion cannon.
Cause really these things are a lot like TIEs, just slightly more defensive (2 hull + 1 sheild > 3 hull) and slightly more offensive (same actions + TL), and we don't know about movement yet, but I'd guess it's similar. They have this interesting title to play around with, but I doubt that title will be effective in a swarm of them, because it makes them too costly to capitalize on the benefits of swarms. I think the Scyk title will be most useful for when you really need an ion cannon/flechette torp/proton rocket or some other niche need and don't have the points for a 25+ point ship.
I don't think an HLC swarm is safe enough, even with the defense amp. Every bad roll is a dead Scyk, which when they are toting an HLC, is a lot. I think HLC Scyks maaaaay have a place, but it'd be in a specialized list, and that is for another thread.
I do think the Scyk swarm will be viable, however. Need tos ee more of their tools, but so far...

Unless the app is wrong they are 3 agility ships which makes them better than your standard tie.
Yes you might still lose one in the first round of shooting but having 4-5 4 dice attacks at range 3 with no enemy agility bonus, man I find it hard to believe that you wouldn't down a ship and at least hurt another in the opening round. Yes, you are depending on 3 green dice but a focus and a re-roll should at least help a decent amount. We also have no idea what the dial is like which will influence things a lot. I'd just be ecstatic to have at least a somewhat maneuverable ship with a HLC for once. And a cheap one to boot!

I agree that they will definitely have that specialty role, but don't necessarily agree with the notion that more ships is always better. I know that you have more ships to use the ability on, but it's a defensive ability not an offensive one. Having more ships wouldn't really give you a benefit since most of the enemy will be shooting at the named pilot and only maybe one or two depending on the The enemy list won't get a shot at her. Having more ships to buff defensively wont matter if the enemy isn't shooting them. Also, I would much rather have four 4 dice attacks than 6 or 7 2 dice attacks. The defender is rolling fewer dice and you're rolling more offensive dice. Plus no agility bonus at range 3. Now that's deadly.

Can you post this new Scyk ability, so I can comment. By a defensive Howlrunner are you saying if the ship being attacked is within range 1 you re-roll 1 defense die everytime?
sounds cool

That is it exactly.
There also appear to be 2 cannons that we do not know what they do. Flechette being one...

So looking forward to this. The Defender and the Firespray are some of my favorite ships, so big win all around.
Someone on this site mentioned this:
6 pts.
Flechette Cannon
Attack 1 ship in your firing arc. Attack 3: Range 1-2. If the attack hits the ship, it suffers one damage and gains a stress token. Ignore all other results
works just like a Ion Cannon, but causes stress
I would buy it.
Why would that be six points when Ion Cannon has a greater range and is 3?
Yeh, I don't think I'd use it. To expensive to load up on, and one stress a turn is annoying, but less impactful then an Ion.

I think thats exactly what it is but it certainly won't cost more than an Ion Cannon, which costs 3 pts and is arguably better than that example.
My guess is 2 points. 3 max

Edited by Syleh ForgeIf your gonna pay 6 points for a cannon it must do more than one damage.
