I just picked up the core set yesterday and haven't actually played yet but I think I'm already hooked just looking at the stuff in the box.

1) Are there any retired ships? It seems like the Millennium Falcon and Slave I are hard to find, and if I do find them they're double the MSRP. I'm not sure I'd want to get into it if I've already missed out on my two favorite ships.

2) I know a year or so ago that Target had 50% on the core sets and Barnes and Noble put most of the small ships in their 75% clearance. Has that happened again recently or did I miss the boat on that too?

3) I know that I'll probably need another Core set just for the range finders, tokens, and dice etc. but what else would I need to play a 60 or 100 pt match with a friend to get him hooked? I've watched several videos on what to prioritize buying but I'm having difficulty finding things at my local game store.

No, nothing has or is likely to go out of print. There is a huge demand for ships though because the game is so popular, and FFG has a hard time keeping up so there are occasional shortages when everything sells out but before a restock happens. We expect a new restock soon(ish) and then everything will be available for a while again.

Check your local Barnes and Nobles store. They usually have a good stock as no one thinks of looking there. They have full sticker price, though, as opposed to a good local game store (with loyalty discounts) or the online markets.

There are no retired ships or ships that are only available as prizes in x-wing. Ships will sometimes go out of stock if they are new or part of a current popular build but they will be restocked within a few months. It's usually worth checking different stores if there is a ship you are after that is rare as usually someone will have a few in stock. The Facebook groups are great for tracking down hard to find ships.

For extras a TIE and X-wing expansion each are great as they will give you extra pilots that are not in the core game. After that it you're trying to hook a Star Wars fan I'd suggest some of the more iconic ships from the films rather than the newer ships from the games of books as they will not be as instantly recognisable for most people.

1. Restocks do seem to be coming out slowly. I would not pay more than MSRP for any ships if you can help it. Wave 1 and 2 are selling pretty high right now but none of the ships are retired. They will be available again... eventually?

2. Some folks have been walking away from the game so ask around your FLGS and see if anyone is planning on parting with their collection. I got a pretty good start by buying in that way.

3. Buy the ships that you and your buddy think are fun! So much of what makes the game entertaining is playing out your star wars memories on the table. Loved the A-wing in RotJ? Buy it and love running circles around the map. Imperials more interesting to you? Go for interceptors. I would recommend rebel aces as a good way to throw some really fun pilots and cool looking miniatures into your collection.

I wouldn't consider them a Star Wars fan if they didn't recognize the ships from books and games. I have a friend that's interested but he's convinced the game is like crack and he'll have to have every single ship to complete the collection. He still plays Starfleet Battles and whatever the new version is called, and is intrigued by the streamlined rules. I think my main concern isn't convincing him he doesn't have to own everything, especially with the capital ships costing so much.

I saw them on clearance over the summer while on vacation in the Virginia beach area. They had B wings, Y wings, Tie Bombers, Interceptors and Advanced for about 3$ each. I was originally going to get them just to resell later but I changed my mind. So regretting it now, since I can't even find an MSRP Tie Advanced.

My closest B&N doesn't stock them any more, I'll have to check the one that's 30 minutes away next.

Many suggest (and I am also of this opinion), that you should target variety before repetition. Remember that every single ship pack contains upgrades that you often can't get anywhere else. You can watch videos on youtube that show the different ships and you may find that variety is more interesting than repetition. It is easy to share the range finders and dice. Think of the second core as a mid-purchase goal.

You're getting into the game at a great time because the two Aces expansions (Rebel Aces and Imperial Aces) are great ways to flesh out a faction very quickly.

If you went the single pack route, a TIE Interceptor/TIE fighter expansion or an X-wing/B-wing expansion are no brainers for those factions.
