I'm a Wookiee Slicer and my group could use a doctor.

By rowdyoctopus, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm thinking of training in medicine and taking a related skill tree with some up coming XP. My Intellect is at 4 right now. At the rate my group is gaining XP, I can have a medical specialization and 2 ranks in medicine after 2 more sessions, possibly even 1.

Now I do not have the Age of Rebellion rule book, but a few in my group do. Can anyone go into the pros and cons of the Doctor and Medic specializations? Especially if you have used one or both. My group won't meet again for nearly 2 weeks.

I like the career skills I gain from Medic more than Doctor, but I don't know what the new talents do. I can see the tree and talent names with OggDude's awesome program, but Stimpack Specialization is new to AoR, as well as It's not that Bad. I don't need the full text, but can anyone summarize what they do?

Which would you take? Doctor or Medic?

IIRC, Stimpack Specialization gives one more restored health each time you use a stimpack. Which is quite useful if you see a lot of combat.

That does seem pretty good. Especially when there are 3 ranks of it available. Two stims covers most character's wound threshold at that point.

Medic also gets the ability to block critical hits, including the dreaded Gruesome crit. I play a doctor, but I only took it due to flavor and a particular concept. Strictly speaking, medic is just as capable with healing, better at combat, and has that amazing crit blocker.

Is the crit blocker the one titled "Its not that Bad"?

I like the ranks of Resolve that Doctor has, though Well Rounded is a pretty good addition in the Medic tree.

Technically our game is Edge of the Empire. I'll ask the GM to see if he has a problem with me taking the Medic specialization. Our party is working with the Rebels right now, so from a game perspective it makes sense.

Doctor has pressure points, which is amazing for any brawler.

Other-wise medic has more useful talents, if you don't have a handy bacta tank.

We don't have a Bacta tank, and I tend to use melee weapons over brawl. My group cannot seem to keep a ship for more than 5 sessions, so convincing them to drop the credits for a Bacta tank seems unlikely. Aren't they slow anyway? Our party hardly has any down time, at least since I joined. We also don't do much time oriented stuff.

So as of now I'm leaning towards Medic. Waiting to hear back on what the GM thinks.

Just heard back from the GM. He's on board with me nabbing Medic. Thanks for the help guys.

Yup, "It's Not That Bad" is the one!

If you want to actually be useful at medical things, especially in combat, then the Medic from AoR is particularly good. The Doctor from EotE is good at longer-term medical things, but also gives you some benefits that can be surprisingly useful in combat (including a stun attack that bypasses all Soak and adds your Medicine skill to the weapon-free Brawl damage), and includes lots of Grit and other talents that are generally useful.

So, the question you should be asking yourself is what do you want your real focus to be?
