Invent our Own Illicit Upgrades - Have fun!

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

True! But that is the risk you take when you build an all eggs in one basket list.

You could change it a little as such:

3 points

Small ships only

Use the same rules as large ships for Ion Tokens. Once affected by Ionization discard this card

Edited by eagletsi111

P.S. - Why couldn't we have Illicit Ordinance? I created one above

No reason you can't have illicit ordnance type upgrades, but plasma torpedoes were legal and used by military forces, so they'd probably be better off as a generic upgrade rather than illicit.

Good to know. Thanks,

Ion disruptor

Attack: Discard this card to place an ion token on an enemy ship in your arc within ranges 1-3. This attack deals no damage

If anything would be large ships only. This feature was on the Falcon.

Maybe though.

Well if that's the case then it wouldn't count as a Scum upgrade, either. Since technically the Falcon or YT-1300 is not a scum ship.

The name was picked to describe the effect, not because of real ordinance from the EU. I was just wanting to create a bleed effect ordinance. What would be a better name?

This was pre-yavin. It was totally a scum ship, certainly not Rebel. + I can see scum using it.

It pains me to suggest it, but Buzz Droids might be one such option that probably fits.

No worries. Not trying to nit pick you. Sorry if you got that feeling

I agree, but.

How to add them to the game to balance them, hmm.

Perhaps this:

Buzz Droids

4 Pts

Target Lock, Range 1-2 Attack 3. Discard this card to perform the attack. If the hit the target suffers 1 damage and ignores all other damage. Place a buzz droid token on the ship. At the start of combat roll 3 attack dice, if a none roll a critical suffer 1 further damage. If a critical is rolled then discard the buzz droid token.

Buzz droids could be fun. I think you need to work on the wording a bit. I would just roll one dice at the beginning of a future combat phase for each Buzz driod token. On hit/crit suffer damage, on a blank remove the token, on a focus receive a stress token. I like it!

This might be broken but could be a scummy ability:

Communications Jammer. 5 points

Action: Choose one enemy ship range 1-2, that ship can no longer use its pilot ability until the end phase.

Would be great on a low PS ship to complete screw up your opponents synergy. Expensive and takes an action, but it could give you a great tactical advantage.

I'd say that 5 is too high. Maybe 3 or 4 since there is a decent chance that it will be totally useless against generic ship heavy lists.

Ablative armor

If an attack would hit you you roll an attack die. If you roll anything but a miss prevent all damage from the attack and receive a damage card, on a miss the damage is not prevented.

Fake Transponder:

Until your ship attacks or is targeted by an attack, your Pilot Skill is 9.

The idea being that the faction you're fighting doesn't treat you as hostile until you're close enough to be in their sights, or you shoot them.

Or, you cannot be attacked unless an attacker spends 1 focus token on you.

Sort of to simulate them looking at your ship and realize that it is not a TIE fighter.

Space Dust

Action: Choose one enemy ship in range 1. The pilot of this ship is blinded. Discard this card after use.

This is interesting, but how do you explain it fluff wise? Does the ship shoot it, or drop it?

Lots of cool upgrades!

I also had glitterstim drugs, which are a narcotic in the EU:

Glitterstim drugs:

1 point

Discard this card during the planning phase to increase your PS by 3 until the end phase of that turn. After the end phase of that turn, decrease your pilot skill by 2, to a minimum of 1.

Example: N'Dru Suhlak, uses glitterstim:

N'dru starts at PS7. In the turn he discards the glitterstim upgrade, he is PS10. In subsequent turns he is PS5.

Fake Transponder:

cost: 1

Interesting. Maybe an attacker can discard a focus token before they attack to make you discard the upgrade?

possible text: You may not be targeted. Discard this upgrade after you perform an attack. An enemy at R3 can discard a focus token at the beginning of the combat phase to force you to discard this card.

I like it, but I would also say that all criticals are turned to hits, since your not taking any damage when firing. (based on the heavy laser.) Most Big ships move 1 as their primary moves and the Ion really does nothing to them even after they get two, and most have a green 1 to clear stress, especially with crew..

You could also say that ships that take this cannot have 360 firing any longer to give it some balance

Just some idea's

I was thinking about the same thing. Was going to call it "smuggling compartment", but I couldn't come up with a good effect for it... how about:

Large/Huge Ships only (not sure if this is necessary)

"You may place one other upgrade card purchased for this ship on the table face-down and not reveal it. When you use the upgrade card in any way, turn it face-up and reveal it."

Cost: 2

So, you get to hide one other upgrade card until you use it.

Edited by Babaganoosh

I don't really see how hiding an upgrade could work. Yes it would work wonders in a private 1 on 1 game. However in a tournament, early finishers will be able to see what you've hidden if they observe you and negate any surprise hiding the card could be. Plus what upgrade you do have could give away the type of upgrade you are hiding, which for something like a canon, really limits what it could be down to HLC, Ion Canon and Autoblaster...three choices which the opponent could anticipate.

Edit: I don't mean to sound to harsh! It's a lovely idea...but I can't see people using it much.

Edited by Ebak

I agree with Ebak. For one off games could be cool. I too think most people play tournaments.
