A little Imperial 'might'.

By Sonikgav, in X-Wing

Ive been looking at making an imperial list for sometime, and when Wave 5 hits ive got an idea for a 2 ship (Oicunn+Echo) list im going to try but i feel im overlooking the more sturdy ships and only looking at Interceptors/Phantoms etc.

So with that in mind...

Omicron Group Pilot - Fleet Officer

Scimitar Squadron - Flechette Torpedo, Ion Torpedo

Scimitar Squadron - Flechette Torpedo, Ion Torpedo

Delta Squadron

100pts

The obvious problem i see is such low PS but the tactic is basic. Bus hands out Focus, Bombers apply Locks. One Bomber launches an Ion Torp into the biggest formation it can see, the other fires Flechettes at the biggest priority. Next round (depending on range) they switch over and do it again.

By that point, with the Defender flying in support as a flanker and the decent firepower of the Shuttle i should be able to put enough hurt on, that my low maneuverability wont be much of a factor.

Would Assault Missiles really be needed? I think I'd rather have 2 sets of Concussion Missiles. I've played with that before and they can both knock out or knock down one target. The trick will be getting the TL, of course.

I've had good luck with Concussion + Cluster missiles on my Bombers. That's 1 pt more than what you have, though.

Good luck!

Im actually using the Assault Missiles as a stand in for Ion Torpedos once theyre released.

*Ill edit them in. Suppose im using Wave 5 upgrades in there already anyway*

7 Points of Munitions on each Bomber.

Was semi tempted to drop the Flechettes and add further firepower on the Defender (though it has a fair bit already). 4 Points though lets me go for a 5 shot Proton Rocket, Cluster Missiles or Concussion Missiles on the Defender, also i save a point. Failsafe?

Perhaps an upgrade to Onyx Squadron, maybe even an Engine Upgrade. I hear Defenders like those lol. Of course i could add some Seismic Charges to the Bombers... I cant help myself, im always tweaking lol.

I'm a big fan of Defenders and Bombers so always happy to see them in lists.

Couple of points though. Anything that requires a target lock to fire is generally more difficult to pull off at low PS, usually due to range and arc restrictions (arc restrictions here being to fire the weapon. I know TL has no arc restriction). It gets tougher when using AOE weapons because you have to guess which of your opponents will be in the centre of their formation before they move. I'd suggest either increasing your PS on the bomber by taking the named pilots, or passing them target locks by someone who has a higher PS.

You can look at Captain Yorr Colonel Jendon in the shuttle if you like. You can get a higher PS ship and give them squad leader so you can focus when you move the Bomber and target lock when the high PS ship moves. Vader is good for this.

Personally I think your list needs a little more bite. Ordnance is good for the initial volley, but you need to really cripple your opponent with it.

I'd look at turning your shuttle into a buzzsaw by giving it Fire Control System and Gunner.

I'd consider getting cluster missiles for the Bombers so you can reasonably threaten low ship count lists. AOE torpedoes are great but if the opponent has only 2 ships and doesn't keep them in range 1 of each other they may as well be normal torpedoes. I'd also consider ditching the Defender to pay for these upgrades, as much as it pains me to say. They're great ships but expensive. Look at "Backstabber", Mauler Methil or a cheaper Interceptor as your flanking ship.

Edit: Jendon is who I meant :S

With bombers I would rather have Colnel Jendon + title as he can gain TL past range 3 and pass them off to the bombers as needed. Of course I see you are already at 100 points. I guess I could drop the defender and use the 30 points to upgrade the shuttle and have more munitions with fail safe.

The thing is once ive got Jendon and tooled him out im down to about 2 Bombers though i may be overtooling.

Jendon - ST-321, FCS, Fleet Officer, Weapons Engineer, Experimental Interface.

Thats a 40 point Bus though i admit its probably a little heavy at that point.

I also get over tempted to take more ordanance. I like to take 2 shots on each Bomber. One Long range (Concussion/Ion Torps etc) and one for the inevitable situation where opponents try to close with me (Cluster Missiles etc)

Been looking at it and think maybe....

Jendon - FCS, Weapons Engineer, Title

Scimitar - Ion Torpedo, Concussion Missile

Scimitar - Ion Torpedo, Concussion Missile

Backstabber

I know this goes against what i said about the Missile ranges, but if i do get a good shot with an Ion Torpedo, it should give me another turn to do the same.

Colonel Jendon (26)
Fire-Control System (2)
Weapons Engineer (3)
ST-321 (3)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)
Flechette Torpedoes (2)
Ion Pulse Missiles (3)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Ion Torpedoes (5)
Concussion Missiles (4)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Black Squadron Pilot (14)
Squad Leader (2)

Total: 100

This is my take on your list. I added Insurance with Munitions Failsafe and a Black Sq Pilot with squad leader Incase Jendon can't give a target lock or even give him the target lock/focus before he stops so he still gets an action. Changed one IT to IPM incase of large ships.Could also change MF and/or Flechette for bombs

Another trick would be put Proximity Mines on one of the bombers then if a ship lands behind you before the Black Sq Pilot moves you could use him to drop a bomb and give your opponet a bad day :D (but this trick would'nt get a lot of chances to work)

ANOTHER idea ive been having....

Jendon - Weapons Engineer, Title

Rexler Brath - HLC

Scimitar - Cluster Missiles, Concussion Missiles

The Bomber and Jendon become more of a focussed assault and Brath can flank while providing serious firepower at a longer range.

When I first saw this thread, I thought:

"A little Imperial might what, exactly?"
