I never read Vengful Spirit, but a summary I found somewhere also said that there's a hint to that in the book. The chaos gods show or tell Horus that the Emperor made a bargain with them at some point for something they had, but somehow managed to trick them in the process and wiggle his way out of providing his end of the deal. (Y'know, if this is true, it'd make the Emperor the very first successful Xanthite in history.)

In Scars, Magnus states that all primarch have (a bit) of the warp in them (even Mortarion and Angron).

Blowing up Magnus's homeworld because Magnus picked a bad way to try and save the Imperium probably didn't do him any favors.

The Emperor really should have told the Primarchs about chaos. That was his biggest screw up. Also the Council of Nikaea didn't turn out too well. He was kind of a **** to Magnus.

Has anyone here read God Emperor of Dune? I feel like the portrayal of God-Emperor Leto would be somewhat similar in some ways to the Emperor and how he rules.

Well, having read God Emperor of Dune, Leto Atreides II, the God-Emperor, is trying to guide and engineer humanity into a superior state, and he's got seriously badass precognitive abilities to help - he (like his father) can see every possible future - and he was that good a precog at nine? years old. Plus, he can look back at the memories of all his ancestors if he needs to.

GE Leto is something of an enlightened, semi-benevolent tyrant. He's reshaping humanity for humanities own long-term well-being and existence. For that matter, IIRC, he even predicts the manner of his death, and who will be responsible, and then lets it happen because it is part of the plan to improve humanity.

But yeah, not warning the Primarchs about Chaos seems to have been a serious oversight. His handling of Lorgar was also rather poor, especially since according to the Horus Heresy novels, Lorgar and his legion were the first to go over to Chaos.

For that matter, IIRC, in one of the HH novels, where daemons are first encountered, the bloody remembrancer (I think) attached to them knows a bit about them and says to think of them as hostile extradimensional xenos that are native to the warp.

A little bit of warning to the Primarchs about Chaos would have gone a long way. Also ... sending Russ to fetch Magnus? Not a good idea. Send a message summoning Magnus to Terra to explain himself - send someone who wasn't as rabidly anti-psyker as Russ to fetch him if necessary.

And for crying out loud - Horus has done loads of bad stuff already, just crush that treacherous bastard right off the bat instead of going easy on him for most of the fight. Kill him at the beginning of the fight, then the Emperor's still in good shape to finish the rest of the Traitors, instead of leaving things more or less at a phyrric draw for the next ten millenia.

The Emperor was pretty good when it came to handling regular people, but did quite badly with the Primarchs, and many of the non-Terran-native Astartes. He pushed the Great Crusade too fast, and didn't spend enough time on building a hold on the worlds it took, and nowhere near enough time on internal security. He trusted the Primarchs with way too much authority way too quickly, especially since he didn't actually raise them in the Imperial Truth.

Lorgar had always fell to Chaos before Horus (and took his Legion with him), it's not just something created with the novels. Neither was the cause, though before the novels it was always left in vague terms, how exactly the Emperor rebuked Lorgar for his worship.

Things they did add, was the complicity of Erebus and Word Bearers in the corruption of the Warmaster and other Legions.

Side note: same with Typhon of the Death Guard. Was a chaos worshipper before the Heresy, before the novels touched his story.

Another slight correction: That wasn't really vague, the Emperor specifically rebuked Lorgar for "wasting time better spent conquering" - that's it. It's why I was so surprised to hear that the novels portray him as anti-religious (in addition to how this contrasts with him apparently not seeing a problem with the AdMech).
