I am trying to start a league for xwing in my area and was wondering if anyone can direct me in the direction of rules for league or materials to get one started.
League play
Nothing official as far as I know. You may have to source games clubs and other groups for how to set one up. Maybe ask one that exists and modify their system to what you want to have. Maybe someone else will have links to more information than I can provide.
Good luck.
That would be cool - I'm imagining it that you could have the three factions, and people can sign up to be a Rebel, Imperial, or Scum (and they could pick and choose (perhaps for a price
which side to play with on a given night)
Anyway, thematically, you could set things up as literally the Galactic Civil War and each game (there could be several going on at a time, it's a big galaxy) is a minor (or Epic) skirmish for control of planets, resources, etc...(whatever fluff you wanna call it - essentially points yeah?)
Could take it as extreme as each player gets to field unique pilots (Han for example) but if he dies, he dies for this 'season' for that player, which could lend some more intensity to the situation.
I would suspect that Mission Control would get you a long way down the scenario road.
Then you can start thinking of Imperial Assault and Armada.....
- just thoughts here for the taking or mocking. Your choice ![]()
We did a relatively simple setup that worked out well. IMHO the key in any league is flexibility - the tighter it is for people to get games in, the worse.
- Each player picks a Wing of 150 points. Ships and upgrades are independent - you just pay the cost, and have it available. Might have to tweak this with the new presence of 0-cost cards.
- Each game, a player picks a standard 100-point squadron, from their Wing.
- After each game, each player can repair 50 points worth of destroyed cards. Anything not repaired cannot be used in that player's next game (but is an option after that)
- At the end of each week, each player may add 50 more points to their Wing.
You can mix the games up as you like. We allowed either a standard game, or had one scenario each week. Players got a point for a game, an extra point for a win, and one more point if they played both a standard and scenario game in a week.
We're starting with something simple, to try and bring in new players who have steadily growing collections and are learning the rules.
Runs each Tuesday night for 4 months.
Each week:
You field a single 75pt list [must remain the same for the whole night] - you can play anyone you want
Next week you are allowed to totally change your list [even your faction]
At the end of the month, your 3 best results [must be against 3 different players] are calculated as your score for that month.
At the end of the 4 month period, the top 8 will play off in a single elimination bracket with a single list.

Some possible risks in here... Once someone has 3 good results, there's no motivation for them to continue playing games. Every aspect of a league should be set to encourage people to play as many games as possible.
There may also be drop-out issues as people see they haven't got any chance to make the playoff event. And in general, any kind of a playoff that excludes is a bad idea (again, encourage the game).
What we did with ours was have a massive Trench Run event. Everyone who played in the league was welcome, with higher-scoring players getting overall command and some preference in ship selection, but otherwise it was all just for play, and everyone was always involved. We got through the entire thing with 4 players joining mid-league, and zero dropouts. That's the ideal, IMHO.

Some good thoughts, thanks Buhallin.
We originally came up with the 3 results idea, as the big issue raised when we started discussing it with the community was the big
"There may be weeks I can't come, I wouldn't participate at all if i'd be penalised for missing a week". We thought by doing the 3 results, thats doable in a single night, but come every week and you're much more likely to max out and get the desired 3 75-0 wins.
I am more than open to other suggestions though.
I typically do mine based around number of games. If someone misses it's generally easy enough to make up games, and you expect that times people can play or not will even out. It also helps to encourage that guy who always loses to keep showing up, rather than making it a competitive "Well, I'm out" thing.
One thing I did with great success in Malifaux was run what we called Achievement Leagues. You come up with a list of achievements - "Play a game with no unique pilots", "Play a game with no turrets", "Win a game with only one ship remaining", "Win a game playing at a 10 point handicap", "Count the distinct number of letters in the names of all pilots you used this game", etc, and people just play and mark what they accomplish, then you score who gets the most. It's different, and fun, and encourages good players while still being more about playing games than outright winning them. I've never come up with a good achievement list for X-wing, but it's a fun and light way to encourage playing, and especially variety in playing.
I ran a Blood Bowl league at our club, with the intention that all games should take place at the club, to keep things fair. Started out OK, but after a couple of months we were seeing "super teams" with some players; teams that had so much more experience than the rest. As it turned out, a few guys were playing extra games during the periods between club meetings and were basically getting three games in for everyone else's one game.
You need to lay down some strict rules regarding the gaming structure, but allow flexibility within the games. It also depends on whether you want to run the league like a campaign in that each player will have the opportunity to improve his squad, or lose named pilot for good when their ship is destroyed. The key element is fun. Keep the games fun, and the players will keep playing. Also establish right at the start if this will be an ongoing league, or run over a defined number of games.
Some players will inevitably be better than others, so you may need to try and incorporate a seeding system or handicap system to keep the lesser skilled players from dropping out. Everyone must have a chance of winning.

I don't run it but, the league I'm playing runs for 8 weeks and culmanates in a tournament. You get credit for the first 3 games that you play in a week. You are limited to playing the same person no more than 3 times and are allowed to play up to 5 games with non-league memebers for points (since we play at a busy FLGS, letting some games with non-members count is good for the local X-Wing community in general). The final week allows for make-up games to exceed 3 games a week as long as that doesn't put you over 24 games total.
There are a number of achievements that can be earned (can only get each one once) for doing things like one-shotting Soontir Fel, hitting asteroids at least three times in a game and not taking damage, running a list with no elites, running a list with no generics. Games came be either standard 100 point dogfights, scenarios, or epic games, with the points awarded for winning or losing based on which type of game is being played. The league has a league night at the store but games are permitted on other days as well.
The scoring from the 8 weeks of play is used to defermine the seeding for the tournament at the end and the league fees go towards tournament prize support. The guy who runs the league is awesome and puts in a lot of work running the league and developing the community.
Thank you for the suggestions.
