Colour Variations... especially TIE/ln

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Surprised the other day to see drastically different shades in factory paint jobs (not repaints)

I've got seven TIE/ln and the are all 'ESB' blue/grey, my ints and bombers are even deeper in shade (as in the films they are) and i thought this was standard.

However, my friend Sam has two TIE/ln that are the same shade as the TIE/adv comes in (light battleship grey with no blue tone at all)... anyone else got them in this shade. Its much more like the shade they used in ANH as they coudlnt blue screen grey/blue ones properly at the time.

Likewise I've got three royal Ties and two are a nice deep blood red and one is much brighter. I'm putting that down to just factory paint mix variation but the white/grey and blue/grey tie differences seems like it was a conscious decision to change the shade.

all the whiter ones early game release?

I think the earlier ones were a lighter grey and as they released bombers and interceptors we got darker ties.

I might try and track down a pair of lighter ones for 'vaders wingmen'

I was also considering doing some 'white death' squadron lighter bombers by repainting

My 1 non-Aces Interceptor I got before Aces was released. It's the blue/gray like the Bomber, Defender, etc..but at the time I got it, I only had 3 Fighters and an Advanced, all of which are the light gray. I set about repainting it a lighter gray to match them. I have multiple Aces Interceptors(which all match color wise) but my one base repaint Interceptor I use as Soontir Fel.

I do have a color variation between my 3 Bombers. 2 are the regular blue/gray but the 3rd is nocticably lighter. I don't think a wash would actually darken it into line with the other 2. It seems to be a different shade of blue used in the color mix. I use the light one as a named pilot and the other 2 as Gammas/Scimitars.

This exactly for me also... Though I've painted a red stripe on the panels of my different coloured bomber!

I've got six Interceptors. Two are blue/grey, two are blue/grey with red stripes, and two are red. Weird.

Hey, Gadge, can you post a couple pictures of the blue/grey ln types.. I have 16 lns and all are grey, or heavy washed grey, and these days I've washed some just to det them uniform. I haven't seen one done in the b/g though.

I have 2x bombers purchased on the same day at my lgs. One is blue grey the other is grey. I always thought that the base color was the color of the plastic and not painted. It's possible that the colors are inconsistent from batch to batch.

So with the new core set they are now blueish color instead of grey. Interesting, I may get one to have a couple of Tie's as character ships.

I have 3 light grey TIE/LNs and 3 red ones.

...but that's my own doing :P

One day I will repaint an interceptor white and red. No reason other than I think it would look awesome.

just walk down the flightline at Shaw AFB and you will see several F-16s in slightly different shades of grey.. It all depends on what ever given day they were painted and what batch of paint was used... how often they fly, how they fly,etc etc. so I got no problems with different shades of grey on my various ties..

colors are inconsistent. my ties (esp bombers) are different shades. dont worry about it much grettingsĀ”

Got to love all the patterns over-spray makes on jets, all in the name of corrosion control. ;)

My earlier ties are grey, my later ones are bluish grey, all but one came from starters. The detail and paint quality on the xwings improved a lot in some of the later starters as well.
