Just started playing Firespray...

By cpdilloway, in X-Wing

...and it really takes some getting used to using the larger based model when maneuvering around the board. Never tried the larger bases before so this is a bit of an adjustment. Right now using Kath,Turr, and Carnor together against a pair of A-Wings and a pair of B-Wings. Only crashed a couple times so far lol

Okay. So. I'm great with the no engine shuttle. Im horrendous with the firespray and how to use its back arc. How does one begin to grasp using it effectively?

I don't need any list help. Not do I need basic maneuvering help. Don't link me things how to fly large ships, though the OP may want to check out osoroshii's earning your wings thread.

How do you think about utilizing the rear arc.

I get more people in arc with the shuttle than I do with the firespray.

It's not that hard you think where the most logical place to go is and do the opposite, the other guy won't expect it and will end up facing the wrong way and in your rear arc.

it's actually rather simple using one single principle; take it slow. More slowly to maximise shots in your front arc, and then when you get to the edge of range 2 approximately, zoom over the enemies' heads and shoot back, possibly even at range 1. Flank with blockers to keep ships out of your blind spot and you are laughing.

Also, I don't know how you play, but if you tend to K turn to maintain arc, don't. If you find yourself in a position in which you would normally K turn, go straight ahead fast enough to clear the enemy or break and do a hard turn either way. This will most often keep your target in arc, and if you decided to turn, you may not have to take any return fire.

To a certain degree, you can play it like you would a turret, except that you might take hard turns more often of you tend to bank a lot with your falcon.

You just need to keep in mind that you are FOUR times as large as a small base. That means that you are far more likely to graze asteroids, so keep that in mind as you place asteroids and deploy your ships. They are also faster than they may seem, due to the bar being twice as long. With each move, the front of your ship is one base further than a small base would have been.

I often end up banking away from targets and keeping the rear arc happy with targets. I'd like to try autoblaster, intimidation, Mara Jade, and tactical Jammers on Kath so I'll need to rely less on rear arc to get use of that autoblaster.

Also, if you engage on a diagonal you can maximize shots across the board.

I try to think two moves ahead with rear arc in mind. Considering I usually run Rec Spec I'm Focusing instead of TL so picking targets is easy. I play a dodgy Firespray that tries to avoid arcs while having a firing solution on at least one enemy ship each round. My other ships can focus fire, the Firespray just jukes while yelling "¡Toro!"

My goto Firespray is Krassis with HLC + RecSpec (I hope that isn't too listy), which might actually trick enemies into assuming all I wanna do is HLC. If I can get free shots off without return fire I will take it in an instant.

Another strat I like is banking into enemy's paths (works best with Krassis or BH) you can ruin the enemy formation by making them either bump you or fly past behind you for a range 1 rear shot. I think that's why 3BH is viable at all.

I prefer lower PS Firesprays to Kath or Boba for rear arc firing, even though the latter two can PTL with Engine.

So, it appears that I'm not the only one having problems with Firesprays...

Thanks for all the advice!

With the back arc you almost have to do a dance with the firespray to keep ships inside your arc while avoiding their arc. However it using secondary weapons like HLC your rear firing arc is less effective.

when I face more then 1 Friespray I have a bad day but when I fly 2 with a doom shuttle I have so much fun :D

I think the next game I play will be Firespray vs YT-1300; gotta get comfortable flying and fighting these ships before the next tournament. I enjoyed using the Firespray and the rear shot came in handy a couple times
