Soontir and swarm lists

By TasteTheRainbow, in X-Wing

I'm heavily considering flying a Soontir list at my next tourney. I don't fly imperials terribly often, though, so I'm looking for advice. I don't a slave 1 so I don't have a stealth for Howlrunner. Looking at something like this:

Soontir w/ptl and TC

Howl w/Swarm

4 academy TIE's

That's 100 points even and I've considered dropping TC to upgrade Howl to ptl for the turtle. That also gives me a point for initiative so that Soontir can deal with Whisper.

Any more experienced imperial players have any suggestions?

Looks like a solid list to me.

I've only flown a few times against Phantoms, but can't it also be advantageous as Soontir Fel to move after Whisper? You don't get to shoot first if you don't have initiative, but you know where the phantom will be and can boost/barrel roll out of arc so they don't get a shot in (granted your swarm is out of range/arc) and recloak. I'm sure there are entire threads talking about this very topic...to take initiative or to give it...

I'm unsure about Swarm Tactics on Howlrunner... Purely personal preference, but I usually run her naked or with PtL and/or Stealth Device

If Soontir is being the agile fellow he is, Howlrunner will most likely get focused on first and Stealth Device or PtL can make all the difference. The only problem i see from PtL is it makes your swarm a little more predictable if you want to continue taking actions in future turns.

As a side thought, you could even drop TC and Swarm Tactics to upgrade one of your APs to Dark Curse... Everybody hates shooting at that guy.

Looks solid to me.

If you haven't played Imperials much then you are probably going to lose your first few games. But each time you will get better with Soontir until you start winning.

The thing that's cool about swarm/soonti lists is that they can outflank classic rebel builds or swarm over falcons

I like running this one.

Soontier Fel + ptl

Turr

Howlrunner + st

academy x 2

99 total

I like running this one.

Soontier Fel + ptl

Turr

Howlrunner + st

academy x 3

99 total

That looks nearly identical to my standard list, but I add VI on Turr to make him really nasty. Did you by chance have a typo and meant 2 academies though?

Yea it was a typo I just realized thanks for catching that.

Howlrunner + st

Soontir w/ptl and hu, sometimes su too

Turr w/ VI

These guys are an amazing duo for most Imperial builds. I ran them with Vessery and Brath tonight in a 150pt build. They rocked!

I feel there's no point to PTL Howl in an attempt to keep her alive, because the current game has advanced significantly in terms of firepower, and Howl would die anyway. I would consider dropping Swarm Tactics for initiative bid, which would help Soontir hunt phantoms. And also pumping a TIE up to PS 8 isnt enough anymore when han and whisper are PS9

Soontir w/ptl and TC

Howl w/Swarm

4 academy TIE's

Is a solid list and would have made it to the final table in the Nordic Championships, if not for a crucial manoeuvre decision on my part.

If your not use to imperial don't get frustrated if you lose your first game.

Just remember

Fel is your flanker

Ties are your fodder.

Don't worry so much about keeping them alive.

Use them to block and make a better target over fel and howl.

4 ties can do a lot of dmg

One game on vassal, it came down to fat Han, still with full shields, and my 4 ties, and I still won. I just blocked him every turn I could to action deny

How about:

Vader with EU, Prockets, Outmaneuver

Howl with determination

Obsidian x 2

Black squadron with draw their fire

99 points

Five ships, not enough bite.

I just made a Video on My "Soontir Swarm" build.

It's Soontir+Push the limit

Howlrunner+ Swarmtactics

Mauler+ Swarmtactics

Black squadron pilot+ Swarmtactics

Night Beast.

With this build, all the ties can be Skill 8 in the combat phase.

I think it's a great great list, as it solves the problem of ace + miniswarm so elegantly - suddenly the ace is absurdly hard to target and to hit, and so the opponent has the unenviable task of chewing through all those ties, all the while having a baron on his back. Just a shame about stealth for soonts.

I'd consider dropping swarm I think, because against Whisper in particular, Soontir wants to move last real bad; it's not much of a toss up for me, as if a game comes to whisper vs soontir, denying shots is the most powerful tactic you have, as you also deny tl, focus and stealth. Give Whisper initiative and Soontir is in some serious trouble imo.

Given your love of Corran, I think you're going to dig playing the king of arcs, Tastetherainbow :)

Wow, a almost one year old posted revived, thats frankenstein levels. I was wondering why fel did not have autothrusters

I remembered it, "necro" . Yeah that was it is called, necroing.

It might just be me but I like giving soontir PtL, SD, and AT, make him hard to hit, but ive never tried flying ace + miniswarm so idk. you could do

soontir as i described +howlrunner w/swarm + epsilon leader + 2 academy ties. =98 pts so you could stick PtL on howl instead or something.

Jeez, I didn't even notice that. Must be really tired. Maybe even malnourished ... Gimme some pizza, eh?

Zero Autothrusters in the age of TLT's...

what a terrible idea.

The list was posted before Autothrusters were even spoiled.

Been playtesting this list at home and it works well.

Soontir PTL AT SD

Howlrunner SD

Black Squadron Draw their Fire

2x Black Squadron

99 points

Drop the DtF for a 98 initiative bid.

Or use a 1 point EPT on Howlrunner instead.

How many times do we hear folks on the forum say, "It's not hard to do a forum search before you post! Don't make a new topic when there's already a topic about it!"

Now that the (2nd) OP did, it's "Don't necro threads."

It's a no win-situation for everyone.

I just tried my first game with this type of list. It went well, though I had some pile-ups learning to fly a swarm. Turns out bumping isn't so bad with TIEs as long as you end up able to take shots. Also, Soontir is a lot of fun to fly :). I ran:

Soontir Fel + PTL + AT

Howlrunner + Crack Shot

Academy Pilot x4

That comes out to 99, and I'm not sure on the last couple points. I went with Crack Shot on Howlrunner plus 1 point for initiative. 2 points isn't enough to really make Howlrunner more survivable, but I figure Crack Shot generally means 1 extra damage, which is a great deal for 1 point.

Other options I considered were TC (plus title) on Soontir or just leaving off Crack Shot for a 2 point initiative bid. Does one of those seem better?

After thinking about it I have revised my squad from above to this.

Soontir Swarm

99 points

Soontir Fel (35) TIE Interceptor (27), Royal Guard TIE (0), Push the Limit (3), Autothrusters (2), Stealth Device (3)

“Howlrunner” (23) TIE Fighter (18), Swarm Tactics (2), Stealth Device (3)

Black Squadron Pilot (15) TIE Fighter (14), Draw Their Fire (1)

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13) x 2

No Academy pilots so PS bid is over TLT spam list. Draw their fire for some added longevity for Howlrunner or Soontir. Swarm Tactics for that extra few dice at PS8 against aces. DtF and Swarm Tactics can be easily dropped to make a lower SP bid for initiative, or removed and replace the Obsidians with Black Squadron pilots.

The generally accepted rules is 1 to 3 months depending on the forum, not a literal year. The initial posts on this topic is so irrelevant that it warranted a new topic
