X-Wing Cards Symbol Cheat Sheet

By any2cards, in X-Wing

For the past several weeks, I have been working with a bunch of players that are brand spanking new to X-Wing. In addition, some of them also really don't have much of a background of gaming in general.

Before we ever got together to play, I provided each of them the following:

  1. A link to the base rules
  2. A link to the FAQ
  3. A link to VoidState's Squad Builder

I told them there would be much to learn, and that it could seem overwhelming at first, but hang in there.

As we got together and played (beginning with very basic/recommended match ups), one thing became abundantly clear. They were having difficulty remembering what all of the images represented within the pilot's upgrade bar, not to mention the action bar.

When we moved on from basic games to those where they could design their own squads, it became very tedious for me to have to keep answering what all of those symbols meant.

I realize that the majority of you who participate within these forums won't need these cheat sheets, but perhaps you have friends or those you are teaching who could benefit from them.

Here is a link to a reference guide that has helped my players, and saved my sanity:

10/18/2014: Added Action Bar and Game Token Sections

I might want to do something similar, but then at an even more basic level (see my purpose here ).

I will want to do something to explain the action symbols on the cards: the focus, barrel roll, evade, and target lock.

Yes YES YES YES YES YES !

Trying to make something really complicated easy and fast to learn is my favorite part of teaching. =)

Yes, my friends had trouble with remembering the images too.

The image from the rule book explaining how to read the card, and then some basic rules like range, moving, etc.

The four relevant parts of the turn: plan move, move, action, shoot, (cleanup).

Yes YES YES YES YES YES !

Is your IRL name ' Stefan '? :P

The image from the rule book explaining how to read the card, ...

I assume you're talking about the graphic on pg. 8, top right.

I'm thinking it might be worthwhile to create a beginner-level of that; one that leaves out the 2) pilot name, 3) ship type, 4) faction icon, 13) points values, 9) ship-type icon and 10) upgrade possibilities. That's 6 items that are unnecessary at the early stage or self-explanatory, and reduces the initial clutter to focus on what's important.

...and then some basic rules like range, moving, etc.

Indeed. A cheat-sheet for that would be very valuable. Do you guys know of anything that already exists? Otherwise, I might be making that. Because I'm limited on time (I know my forum posting belies that fact), I'd appreciate any lean language that I could incorporate for that.

I used an acronym, P.A.C.E. (planning, activation, combat, end) to teach the phases to a couple visiting friends.

I added Action Bar and Game Token sections to the document and noted same in the OP above.

Thinking about how I want to do a section of the basic steps to a "turn".

Nice sheet.

I made this sheet to help some mates get into the game. It's very basic but much less intimidating than a rule book. It may help with your buddies.

I spent last night trying to decide how I wanted to approach the basic steps of a "turn". Then, this morning, I logged in and saw your sheet. Nice work. I may just have to plagiarize some of this stuff ! :P

That is unacceptable! I am against plagiarism to the core. It is downright wrong! People who plagiarise the work and IP of others lack principles, honour and have strayed far from the basic moral codes that we humans live by.

I jest of course, here is the .docx file so you can cut and paste anything you want.

You should also mention stress tokens and color of maneuver in you quick sheet. I have seen many new players attempt to do red maneuvers with stress tokens. Also you might want to include the actions up to boost (cloaking may be optional but if this is a new player guide then I would not suggest phantoms for new players.
