[Seeking Feedback]: Systems in my campaign

By GM Hooly, in Game Masters

Hello Fellow GMS!

I've not run an Edge of the Empire Campaign before and I am keen to get some feedback on the systems that I've created for a campaign that I have been asked by several of my players to run.

I've set a goal of 28 planets in the sector, and would like some assistance and feedback.

Here are several systems I've completed:

Aan Esti
Arlave
Baros
Bekescaan
Dominus
Dornea
Endooine

I've got a little stuck for ideas with some of the systems, so any suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How many systems do you need ideas for?

I mean, how is it going to be specifically relevant to your game?

Personally I've made up several new planets for our adventures, but it's almost always "The system the players are going to arrive on in the next session."

I haven't encountered the need to make up details for seven new systems at once yet.

But if you really need to, what I would do is look at ideas from outside the game and adapt them to your game in interesting ways.

In our game the players were going to a planet which was basically "Casablanca in space", with refugees and the empire cracking down and a sense of lawlessness. I just added "it's a canal planet", so the air is moist and humid, travel is done through gondolas and riverways, and there's an underwater quotient to it.

All those ideas came from "it's a canal planet". We had a fun fight underwater, a cool gondola chase, and a sense of refugees being oppressed by the Empire.

Next up, I looked at "What kind of cool environment could be on a planet?"

There was a page I had bookmarked which is, sadly, gone, but which featured "33 environments you won't believe are on earth", including salt flats, cool underground caves, bizarre colored laked, glowing plankton, and others.

I took "salt flats", did some research and made a planet based on salt flats. It's got a flat, salty surface which is eerily reflective when there's a bit of water on it.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to look up some cool environments to make your planets feel fresh.

One thing that seems to be a constant in Star Wars is income inequality. Most of the Galaxy has a pretty huge divide between the poor and the rich. There's very little "middle class" in Star Wars. You're either a rich nobleman or a poor peasant, or worse, a slave.

You can keep that in mind and find interesting ways to express it for different planets.

Good luck!

If you have it - play a Mass Effect game (2 or 3, I think part 2 is the best for it), there are dozens of systems to 'explore' and a lot of inspiration for SW games. Probably there is also a Mass Effect wiki or another online resource you can use for this, too. There is also a new game for mobile phones, Interstellar, which allows players to create their own systems, might inspire you too.

This is a pretty good idea, especially because your planet profiles look nearly identical to how the Mass Effect planet profiles look.

The Traveller game system series has many sources for random creation of worlds and star systems. There are many, many different versions. Some create a basic world similar to what you are doing, others get much more detailed. You can pick up one of the many different versions used or find PDF versions also. If you are interested in where to look and which one for your needs I can help.

I did use Traveller for the initial creation of the sector as well as the planets (as a base) and then worked from there - thus a subsector (in Traveller terms) of 28 systems. I then started working each system up.

For a previous campaign (see below for Moon Swing Chronicles) I populated the Over Sector with hundreds of worlds (many not fleshed out). The heroes only ever went to a few, but it gave the PCs the illusion of free will. I wanted to do the same for my new EotE Campaign, but just on a smaller scale.

I guess I was just after feedback on the appearance and format of the layout I'm presenting, and if anyone wanted to offer some suggestions on world types.

Cheers.

The layout looks fantastic. I would definitely feel like my character had a huge galaxy to explore if there was even 20 or so of those planet profiles.

The look of your work is fantastic.

I am curious though, when you say Sentient Species, do you mean Native Species?

Exactly.
