150 points = more fun!!

By Plainsman, in X-Wing

We have been playing 150 point builds and it has been a lot more fun! I t has typically meant our builds have one more ship and a couple of more upgrades on other ships. Each game seems to take just over an hour as we are playing casually and enjoying ourselvrs.

Anybody else playing 150 point games?

That's my preferred point threshold. I love the additional fighters and upgrades you can pack in.

Just last night I fought against a 4 Rebel build with really upgraded BXEA. Luckily my TIEs pulled off any incredible win.

My son played two A's, two B's and a HWK in the last game. I had an Interceptor, Phantom and two bombers. It came down to one ship on each side with four hull each left! I won just barely, it was back and forth all the way through!

I was lucky- Whisper, Howl, dual PTL Royal Guards, and 3 Academys wound up with only 4 damage between then (1 from an asteroid collision) while in a single turn they wiped out the E, B, and A-wing with long range shots.

I also had the advantage in that it was our local store's RPG night, so we were playing on a smaller table.

We started at 150 because my addict of a friend went mad and he wanted to use as many of his ships as he could, last few months we went down to 100 which I think takes a little more thought where squad building is involved.

I have only played one 150 point game, but I really liked it. It gave me more options, but didn't take nearly as long as a epic game. It was nice to take a fully upgraded ship and not have to just throw in 2 other cheap ships as filler because I only had a few points left.

That's cool. What size board did you play on, and how did you feel about it?

I think the game has grown a bit big for its britches at 100. A number of issues get smoothed out at higher point levels. My sweet spot is 125pts on a 3x3..

This leads to a good question: what size play mat do you play on with 150pts per side?

We've stayed on 3'x3' but could easily move up if there's a benefit!

My son and I agree, 3x3 is fine as neither of us bring Swarms, 5 ships per side has been max as we bring quality over quantity.

Actually I think it starts warping... Not quite enough space, so you need a larger board and more mobile ships get wrecked faster.

Now 125, im okay with. Sadly, doesn't help my builds much.

Last couple major games I played, we picked a number of ships (small base only), and upgraded the heck out of them - no points restrictions. I thought that format was a lot of fun. Went 1-1.

Games take too long with 150 points.

i must have been typing as you posted!! I have been liking 3x3 but could easily go bigger if necessary.

My suggestion is 3'x4' for 150pt (but 3'x3' definitely works). You want to keep the 3' width, because the game is designed around that. 4' gives you a bit extra room, but still keeps things tight. The game still needs that tight maneuvering and danger of going off the board and you don't want to giver certain ships (Soontir, Dash, etc.) a lot of extra room or else they can get a larger advantage. You then also up your obstacles to 2 more (total 8) to keep your obstacle density similar.

If we find we need the extra foot, we'll add a couple of asteroids! Great idea!

Our crew at the FLGS usually play 125 but we've done 150 several times. I don't find the games take any longer, but as one caution... do not play 150-point TIE swarms against each other. That one *will* take all night.

I prefer 150, and I hope that eventually tournaments get moved to that range now that there are so many ships! 150 point games don't take much longer than 100, focus fire from more guns means ships drop quicker so I would honestly guess 150 point takes 20-30% longer than 100.

100 points is an hour...

150 is...possibly 1.5 hours or slightly more?

Anything but 100 points! I'm completely sick of 100 point builds.

But the 150 point TIE swarm vs rebels only requires 3 turns :)

Games don't scale linearly like that. 150 in an hour is entirely reasonable. It also depends on who you play. I can knock out 100 pt games in 30 minutes all day if I am focused. An hour for a game means I was only playing during commercials while a football game was on or something.

3x3 works fairly well for 150pts, and we use Epic rules for squadron density- only 8 models of a particular ship allowed. So no TIE swarm of 12...

We can finish a game in about an hour, depending on the squads.

I'm rather cool with 150 points as a standard. My bombers can load up with ordinance for once, and I can take ST-321 Jendon and Jonus to boot!

I've found that 3x3 foot is still plenty of room for 150pts.

...You...should just play Epic...I mean it's...Epic...and stuff.

All kidding aside it sounds like your all ready for this FANTASTIC format that receives the least love. Crank it up to 200 points and bam, team Epic happens. :)

doooo iiittt. Come on, you know you want to play with the big boy toys.:D
