New Article up, Advanced Guide to A-wings!

By Jo Jo, in X-Wing

And love for the Hawk too.

Oh yes, I do love my HWK. Very important and underrated Rebel ship.

Before I even read it... where are the spoilers? We need more spoilers!!!!

I usually agree with Tusken Tactician's ideas, but Garven with R2-D6 and Adrenaline Rush? Luke with Experimental interface and squad leader? Just to give actions to Prototype Pilots? It's a bit much. I like A-wings a lot, but this is stretching it. (also, naked Roark?!)

I don't know what the policy for these squads was, but there are only 4-ship builds (with a ton of HWKs) and I think A-wings are starting to shine in the 5-6 ship area, or just as nice fillers, which I don't see much of here.

double post, how did that happen?

While I like the article, there seemed to be almost greater focus on the HWK than the A-wing. 5 out of 8 builds included at least one HWK.

Love that wave by wave narrative they've got there.

It's funny, I didn't realise how much I had focused on the HWK. But it goes to show that I think the HWK is a great support ship for the A-Wing, I guess.

Some of the builds are a little off the wall. That's the idea. The way I write my articles you're not meant to agree with the build per se but start a debate on it. That said, the Anchorman build works very well. Remember, you can change a RebOp with Ion for a Rookie if you wish, for example.

And yes, naked Roark! But I do add the caveat afterwards that it would need testing.

Basically, the idea is to stir constructive discussion.

Yeah...some of those lists may be fun, but are a little questionable. Also, I really can't stand the way the article was written, especially the joke with Arvel...

It is unique, though. I haven't seen an "in universe" article yet. Gotta say, I also love my hawks!

Lots of food for thought. I like. Much more often I use the Y-Wing as an ion platform.

I am not sure who to let know, but their linked R2-D2 is the astromech and not the crew.

No spoilers from me.... this time!

I'm not mad on the 5-6 ship A-Wing builds. And I didn't think that just adding one as a filler would be very interesting in terms of squad presentation. I was going for a bit more left-field, to be honest.

And yes, I appreciate that 5/8 builds had a HWK, but 8/8 builds had A-Wings.

I think all the X-wing articles should be written like that.

Stealth hwk article!

That loadout on Tycho in the very last squad looks super fun to fly.

I've told them about the R2-D2 link, thanks. That'll probably change in a few hours.

Pygon, I far prefer the HWK. An extra evade die and the possibility of crew far outweighs the lack of K-turn for me. But that's a discussion for another day.

Cody, sorry you don't like the style. Some others have said it's the best article I've written so far. Horses for courses, I guess. Rest assured that the next one (ooooh!) won't be in that style.

Pretty cool article. I've tried to even use Expose on Gemmer, with limited success. :)

Rest assured that the next one (ooooh!) won't be in that style.

RogueLieutanent,

It's called HyperTycho.

Agreed

****. My browser just crashed on a long post. Here we go again.

In the interest of a constructive discussion:

I really like the Jan Ors + 3 Greens squad. You have a wide leash of range 3, you get to choose a green to shoot +1 die, you can actually get 4 TL+focus dice vs. -1 agility, that's Wedge PtL at range 1, incredible damage! And you get a choice, which is even more incredible. I like it, it has bite, it is reactive.

I don't like naked Roark. At all. Just downgrade Dutch to Goldie and give Roark his Ion.

I don't agree with spending points on already-higher-cost ships to give actions to low-cost ships (Luke->Prototype). Han Solo should not pass actions to Bandits (unless there's a very specific reason).

Here's some squads I would throw in (all with CR and ATP, where applicable):

Jake + VI + Decoy

5 Prototypes

You get to choose a Prototype to shoot at PS9 (range 2 is ok), if you require it (to escape death-before-shooting-syndrome or to zap a phantom before it cloaks). Otherwise, you have a PS9 zipping across the field and a swarm behind him/in front of him.

Also with high-PS shooting, but with 4 ships:

Roark + Ion + Jan

Green + PtL + Outm (x2)

Jake + Outm + Stealth

Not one mention of Daredevil? That card is becoming an auto-include on Tycho for me. The ability to turn, turn again with Daredevil and then Push the Limit to boost, without consideration for stress, makes him the most nimble ship in the game. Especially since he can do it again the next turn. His only threat is Slicer Tools.

I liked the bit where he mentioned defenders.

Nope, no mention of Daredevil because it's so obvious. And wonderful.

I'm waiting for the "should I put expose on my a-wing?" Thread that's bound to pop up.

I think the changes are good but you don't want to go pure a-wing, make an excellent flanker though.
