Multiple action

By punkmonkey25, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The rules state that you can't perform the same action twice. Does this apply to free actions? For example, Jake Farrel does a focus action which allows him to take a free boost action. He is then given a focus token from Kyle Katarn, so would he have to barrel roll? Then Garven Dries gives him a focus token, can he not do anything?

Thanks for letting me know.

The action restriction does apply to free actions.

But note that spending a token is not an action, and neither is gaining a focus token from a non-action. So if a ship took a focus action, spend that focus, then Garven game them a new focus, they could spend that.

That's right, if Jake took a focus action and Did a barrel roll and was then given a focus token and boosted when Garven gave him a second token he wouldn't have any legal action to perform off of that trigger. He'd still end up with 3 focus tokens but once he has boosted and barrel rolled he's done for his bonus actions.

If you know that Jake is getting two tokens passed to him in a round either Evade or TL instead of taking a focus action.

So Vader's ability still has to be two different actions. But if he used PTL he could do three different actions or two of one plus another since PTL gives a free action.

I think I got this right.

No; all three must be different actions. You cannot perform the same action twice in a round under any circumstances. "Free" action really just means that you can do it outside of the normal action step.

K then I mis-read the above. So the OP's example is correct that the third focus Jake would not be able to roll or boost.

Correct.
