Piloting a viper

By OldUrmel, in Battlestar Galactica

Got here a rather stupid question .. But what is the sense of manning a viper and flying with it when you can control two vipers from the command center ??

What the frack am I missing ?? sorpresa.gif

1) If you are attacking, you can play Maximum Firepower and attack 4 times. Command only gets you 2.

2) If you are defending, you can play Evasive Maneuvers and reroll the attack AND reduce the new result by 2. Playing it on an unmanned Viper only causesz the reroll, no reduction.

3) Special Situations: The Ambush attack card further reduces unmanned vipers with the Training New Pilots special rule.

4) As Apollo, if you start your turn on Galactica and a Viper is launched - it allows you to move (possibly out of sickbay but not the brig) and take an immediate spare action during this turn.

5) As Starbuck, if you start your turn in a viper - it allows you a bonus action.

6) Location, location, location. If you are not on Galactica, you can't be in a location that may take a direct hit and sent to sickbay. Likewise, you can't be the target of teh Cylon Reveal actions that send you to the Brig or Sickbay. (Ok, this last one is a weak argument because the same thing happens on Colonial 1 - but it is still a benefit of manning a viper!)

Thanks ColtsFan. That makes sense !!

7) Another "subtle" one. If you are in a Viper, no one else can control it. So depending which team you are on, you may or may not what your Viper moved. If you are just Commanding unmanned ones, anyone else can Command them as well and may undo what you were planning (moving to attack a Raider that was farther away or protecting a Civie).

Also, by piloting a viper, you can get up close and personal with

Plastic Base Stars.

Which is a good thing.

Not yet, dear friend - but fear not, the time is coming for autumn is nigh

8. You can get in the way of raiders trying to destroy civilian ships. Evasive maneuvers (as previously mentioned) helps.

9. Maximum firepower is REALLY good against heavy raiders who are about to land. It beats taking swings at the resulting centurions with the armory (where you don't get the same kind of dice mileage).
