Implementing Beta Updates

By ExDragoon, in General Discussion

Hi all,

First post here but I have been trying to catch up with all the topics regarding Star Wars on this site. I have both Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion and to everyone that wrote, edit, and play tested these games kudos to you. This is a top notch product that I am going to enjoy for years to come.

Anyways....

As this is my first beta, my question is as FFG releases their weekly beta updates how to do you folks edit your own F&D book? Do you just insert pages as appropriate? Do you have some sort of key that link the corrected information to the errors? Do toiy cross out the error and write the correction in by pen? Curious minds need to know,....ok, well this curious mind.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Regards,

XD

My method is incredibly sophisticated: print out the final update, staple it together and shove it in the front of the book.

With Edge of the Empire Beta, I would treat it like my old C-130 flight manuals, that is I would cross out words, sentences and paragraphs and replace as necessary the applicable text. I would cut out the charts and tape them where I could into the book. I ended up with a rather messy book by the end of all of that. When AoR came out, I did none of those things. It was simply too much work. It was a good thing too since I was able to later sell the book on eBay in a pretty nice condition. With FaD, I have not yet done any of the cutting, pasting, writing though I am tempted to do so. Much of the revision work that went into the game was taken care of by the EotE beta resulting in far less dramatic and copious updates to the latter book. Plus, I have no plans on re-selling my copy of FaD.

The Beta Update process is simple enough that I can just remember what's changed and look it up when I need to, but I could see a helpful system being to get some "removable" stickers or small post-its and sticking them onto the pages in the book where information needs updated, just as a reminder that there is errata for it. The Update document goes by page order, so there's no need for any additional reference info beyond a simple pointer.

Most everything for me is is memorized, but I do have post-it notes over some talents in the tress that have been altered so far. When the beta updates are done, I plan on printing them about, stapling then, then keeping the updates with the book.

I just print out the update and stick it in the front of my book.

For the EotE Beta, I printed the updates out, cut them to size, stuck them onto stickynotes, cut THOSE to size and stuck them into the book either over or near the old rules. That way if the book is ever worth anything I can simply remove them. :D

I just put the latest update on my iPad, so that it's handy if I'm gaming away from my computer.

Though given most of my Star Wars gaming is done via Skype and I'm at my home computer, just having the PDF there is handy enough.

One thing you could do is put a post it flag pointing at modified sections so you know which things have changed and can go look at the beta update.

Thanks folks, keep the ideas coming as I am liking what I am seeing so far.
