Blown out of the water by my gf!

By Rebelarch86, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Scorched battle map. Obliterated ships on all sides. Down to one battered and smoking ship vs another battered and smoking ship.

She had Chewie in the falcon with a target lock I convinced her not to use the previous turn and 3 hull points left. I had an interceptor with with 1 hull point left.

Back story - she is like playing with a kid and needs constant success to stay interested. I don't string too many successful rounds together. 2 set backs in a row might, cause her to quit. So I flub rounds after getting a good one in. And I never win. Losing would cause her to never play again and me to play a lot less.

What happens next is one of the most cinematic moments I have had in any game. I turn my interceptor into the falcon and boost into range 1 setting up her win for her. I shoot first with a higher ps, but figure she has enough hull points to survive it. I roll 3 blasts vs her 1 green die, and she has just 3 hull points. She makes it and in grand fashion, cancels one hit taking a damage card, and one critical dealt face up, which was the hull hit that counts as 2 damage to blow her up, but wait she's Chewie so that gets flipped face down and she hangs in there with 1 hull point.

Her turn to shoot. 4 red vs 3 green. 1 blast, use target lock that I had her save bc, she rerolls and gets 1 more blast, plus 2 focus eyes that she now uses her focus to have 4 blasts. I can only roll 3 green and only have 1 hull left. Game!

She was so excited and pleased with her flying I might risk winning tonight!

it seems that there are so many things just "off" about your post that I've got to comment

does she like playing? or is she just doing it to humor you?

If she's just humoring, why don't you play at a store? I know I wouldn't make my wife if she didn't enjoy the game. We'd find other games/things to do.

Is she such a bad loser that losing once would make her quit?

Does she honestly not know you've been taking dives?

I mostly play with my wife when we have time and a friend who brings his Imp lists over to my house. I have yet to lose a game. Seriously... and I don't really think I'm that good... but he's just that bad.. My wife is pretty good.... so she's gonna get me. I've stopped playing my Fat Chewie list that I really like..... moved to a Hefty Salm.

It's both. She likes games and Star Wars, but doesn't appreciate the nuances of strategy and wouldn't play this if I didn't. She really is like a big kid though, she doesn't like doing things she isn't good at. Every missed roll where she takes hits seems to her like she is doing something wrong and instantly losing. Kills her excitement on the spot.

Yes losing is likely to make her less likely to want to play next time.

She really has no clue I avoid killing her. I mask it well. I will usually take out some of her ships first then let her comeback. She thinks she is awesome at it and gets excited to keep playing.

The lgs in my area don't really have the economy for miniature games. There are 2 and neither of them can get x wing, war hammer, hero clix, ect going. Even if they did that would just be a fun thing to go out once or twice a month. It wouldn't be as much fun as playing with my gf or people I'm actually friends with.

I'd argue that by boosting into range 1, you made it HARDER for her to win. If she hadn't rolled an evade she would have died.

So as well as letting the Wookie win ........

"a target lock I convinced her not to use the previous turn"

what? you talked her out of doing the smart move? I don't understand....

"but doesn't appreciate the nuances of strategy"

I don't know her but I suspect she can appreciate strategy. Otherwise why play?

"Every missed roll where she takes hits seems to her like she is doing something wrong and instantly losing."

...and this is different from how we all act? you roll blanks and you get pissed too. It is hard to watch your girlfriend get pissed about something you are doing together...but she will be ok...don't flinch.

"The (LGS) in my area don't really have the economy for miniature games"

I continue to be confused...where do you live that a game store won't (can't?) support a game like X-wing?

bottom line...give her a chance. I recommend building some lists (with her) that have synergy /combos...when she starts to see how her fleet interacts she may become more interested in the "nuances" maybe Jan/Han (Hwk/Falcon)if she likes playing the Falcon.

and most of all don't "let" her win...dear lord that would drive any woman away.

...and once again...let us know the general area you live...I bet we can find a good place to play.

At least she played the game, guys. And is okay with him having a hobby. Some guys aren't even THAT blessed.
My wife figures if the worst I ever do is stay up till three or four rolling dice with the dudes in the gm's basement once or twice a month, and spend an hour or so in the basement each night, she has WAAAAAY less to worry about than most wives. :D So we even get to game here with her some. (Pathfinder and Marvel, mostly). Having said that, Hidatom has some good ideas
